Flickr The Beresford apartment block next to the Natural History Museum on the corner of Central Park West and West 81st Street, Manhattan, New York

The Beresford at 211 Central Park West, between 81st and 82nd Streets, is an upscale, 23-floor apartment building in New York City. The architect, Emery Roth, was famous for building luxury apartments and hotels throughout the city. The building, completed in 1929, is one of four Roth apartment blocks on Central Park West including the El Dorado (between 90th and 91st Streets), the San Remo (between 74th and 75th Streets), and the Ardsley (on the corner of 92nd street).

The Beresford is the largest by volume. Its mass relieved by horizontal belt courses, staggered setbacks governed by the 1916 Zoning Resolution, which provide some apartments with terraces, and architectural detailing that gives an impression of Georgian houses embedded in the mass.

It takes its name from the Hotel Beresford, which had occupied the same site since 1889. The Beresford has two very prominent street-front facades, crowned by its three distinctive octagonal copper-capped corner towers,[6] the eastern facade overlooks Central Park; and the southern facade overlooks Theodore Roosevelt Park, the park that contains the American Museum of Natural History.

The massive block is opened to the west, giving it a U-shape, wrapped round a central court. Three elevators give separate access to small foyers, originally each accessing two apartments of a scale that was eliminated in New York, both by the stock market crash and the new Multiple Dwellings Law.

Unlike some of Manhattan's prestigious co-op buildings, the Beresford accepts celebrities and politicians as residents.

Current residents include comedian Jerry Seinfeld in Isaac Stern's former apartment, singer Diana Ross, actress Glenn Close, Betsy Gotbaum and Victor Gotbaum, reporter John Stossel, and movie producer David Brown, actor Andrew McCarthy, tennis player John McEnroe, Coach CEO Lew Frankfort, and Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit. Former residents have included historian Alan Brinkley, magazine editor Helen Gurley Brown, diplomat Richard Holbrooke, Tony Randall, Rock Hudson, Margaret Mead, Laura Nyro[10] and Beverly Sills.

The gift establishes the David and Helen Gurley Brown Institute for Media Innovation, a first-of-its-kind bi-coastal institute. Brown, who celebrated her 90th birthday this month, said, "David and I have long supported and encouraged bright young people to follow their passions and to create original content. Great content needs useable technology. Sharing a language is where the magic happens. It’s time for two great American institutions on the East and West Coasts to build a bridge."

There she was near 57th and Broadway looking as glamorous and game as ever. I asked to take her picture, and she graciously asked one of her escorts to take one of the two of us. The last time I saw her, in the optician's office we both use, Leonard's Opticians, I had Clarence with me and she greeted him with delight. I watched her mini skirt get higher and higher and her fishnet stockings extend longer and longer as she leaned over to pet him. That was about 5 years ago. I love to see her go- ahead operation still purring. Right on, sister!

The 1970's version of Sex and the Single Girl updated.

"The idea that a single girl could have a terrific sex life and NOT be in a hurry to get married once shocked a lot of people. This is the book that changed their minds -- and lives."

During the 1960's Helen Gurley Brown became editor of Cosmopolitan magazine and became an advocate of women's sexual freedom. Brown claimed that women could have it all, "Love, sex and money."

As I look to a new year..I force myself to reflect..not on the past but inward..deep inside ..and tell myself that this is the year in which I actually learn from my mistakes...and accept nothing less than what is in my heart...to want...to need..without expectations..for that is the only way to take in all that keeps each of us going..and aids in my being able to put all of that forth into the world as well..

Cosmopolitan magazine was always a bad joke to me. i thought it embodied some of the worst stereotypes about women. but the other night i did a huge wander through archives of their covers that i found in various places online. that look! that 80s big hair sex kitten look was just astounding. and now i can't stop looking! the man who shot most of those covers is the legendary Scavullo. the woman who engineered that Cosmopolitan style and philosophy is Helen Gurley Brown. if you don't know Scavullo, Google him. as for Ms. Brown [Ms?] well she had her own brand of feminism. calling it feminism pisses a lot of people off, or did. but feminism does come in many packages. Ms. Brown has a new book out about her "Bad Girls Go Everywhere" by Jennifer Scanlon. the review by Salon senior editor Laura Miller says it better than i ['cuz honey i just make purses for a living...]. i never thought about "class prejudice" as being a reason for the backlash against Ms. Brown's viewpoints. and i never thought i would look back at these covers and think- hot damn! though perhaps a comment at the end of the Salon article summarizes it best "I always thought that Brown basically urged women to fulfill men's fantasies. That's not feminism."

This is a strange and often funny, in a campy sort of way, collection of classic pulp sex essays taken from that vanguard of the sexual revolution, Sexology. Who knew that before Playboy, before the Kinsey Report, before Penthouse and Hustler and Cosmopolitan and Playgirl there was a magazine called Sexology?

Sexology, founded in 1933, was America's first sex magazine! The magazine was founded by an inventor named Hugo Gernsback (1884-1967). He patented a form of battery and invented the “Telimco Wireless Telegraph.” In his life he collected 80 patents, and with his money, he launched approximately 50 magazines. The first was Modern Electronics. He also is considered by some to be one of the first science fiction writers.

In 1933, Gernsback launched Sexology, earnestly setting out to provide scientific knowledge about sex. It took a while to catch on, but it eventually did. By the end of the 1950s though, it became dated in its approach when compared to other more modern magazines, like Playboy, which launched in 1953, and Cosmopolitan (launched in 1886 as a family magazine, redirected into a woman’s magazine in the late 1960s under Helen Gurley Brown).

i was so grateful anne asked me to take part in an evening dedicated to reading excerpts from celebrity autobiographies. it was a complete and total blast.

i had trouble narrowing down the field but ended up starting off with one of my favorite passages from klaus kinski's all i need is love. the book (which i'd read many years ago), like kinski himself, is an insane delight - the first autobio i thought of when i was initially asked to read. unfortunately, it's been out of print for some time now, but if you're lucky, you still might find it at your local library (unless someone's already stolen it).

i followed that up by reading from the "becoming jesus" chapters of call me crazy, written by the actress (and former girlfriend of both steve martin and ellen degeneres) anne heche. in these chapters, ms. heche recounts the twelve days in 2000 when god started talking to her, telling her that she was jesus and that her name was actually celestia. she recalls being cast opposite tommy lee jones in the disaster movie volcano, directing her own film titled stripping for jesus, and ending up in fresno at the home of mexican immigrants waiting for a spaceship to come and take her to heaven.

multiply klaus kinski and anne heche times nancy kerrigan, tonya harding, clay aiken, deborah spungen, lynne spears, helen gurley brown and, last but not least, david hasselhoff (don't hassle the hoff) - and, well, what you end up with is one hilarious and powerful fucking night.

big thanks: to anne for organizing it; to jenn for creating such awesome musical interludes between acts; to anne AND jenn for the crap-in-your-pants funny singing/interpretive dance rendition of 'the star-spangled banner' that opened the night (gold lamé and all!); and of course to the rest of my fellow readers who delivered their excerpts so effectively and with such gusto.

Sticking the lens in her face didn't make her happy. The book she's laying on is a copy of the 1970 reprint of "Sex and the New Single Girl" by Helen Gurley Brown. I bought it for a prop in a photoshoot, never used it, but decided to flip through it to see how much I disagreed with what she wrote (I'm a spinster). Turns out she had some good ideas!

at his first WPP board meeting. WPP acquired Grey in March. I first met Ed
Meyer in the 70s or 80s, when we happened to sit together on an airplane. I
have no idea where we were going, but I do recall the conversation as one
of the most fascinating I have had on an airplane. (Contenders, all
fortuitous, include Rupert Murdoch, Bruce Wasserstein, Bud Zumwalt, Bob
Kerrey (when he was trying to decide whether to take up the presidency of
the New School and Bill Bradley (Bill B only half by chance; we had been at
the same meeting in Moscow). And then there was the time I sat *behind*
Helen Gurley Brown (Cosmopolitan). I didn't get to talk to her, but all the
stewardesses [sic] came up, one by one, to pay their
respects.) Conclusion: Travel broadens the mind, even before you get there!
