Very sad news...
Powerful earthquake strikes eastern part of Turkey, Van area this morning.
It was officially reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2.
Many buildings collapsed and many buildings were damaged. Thousands of people were killed and injured in the earthquake. .. very limited connection with small villages.
My heart and prayers goes out to earthquake victims!

My cousin lives in Van. Thanks god they are alive. Her son and husband is OK but her leg badly injured by a falling marble while escaping. I am very anxious!

Flickr Virginia Earthquake and Aftershock Epicenter Diagram

Sequence and Location
In this diagram, the numbered data points represent the estimated locations of the epicenters of the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Virginia August 23, 2011 (N=0), and those of its aftershocks (numbered consecutively starting at N=1).

Accuracy
The circles around each epicenter represent the degree of accuracy to which its position can be determined. A larger circle indicates a a larger area in which the true epicenter of the quake may have actually been located.

Magnitude
The color of the markers represent magnitude. The black marker was the magnitude 5.8 mainshock. The red markers represent aftershocks of magnitude between 3.4 and 4.5. The yellow markers represent aftershocks of magnitude 1.8 - 2.8.

Physiography
The background colors represent the different physiographic regions at the surface. The boundaries of these regions may represent locations where potential faults meet the surface. Names of the regions and faults will be added to subsequent updates of this diagram.

Locating the Ruptured Fault
Faults tend to dip southeast from the surface in the Appalachian Piedmont Province. Since the ruptures in the faults that cause the earthquakes generally occur underground, that means that the fault should meet the surface somewhere to the northwest of the epicenters. A likely candidate may be the Chopawamsic Fault that divides the Mine Run Complex from the Chopawamsic Formation. Data from the thirteenth aftershock suggests that the quake did not occur along the Long Branch Fault (located southeast of the Chopawamsic Formation), although that seemed likely based on data from some of the earlier quakes. The epicenter of aftershock 13 was reported to a high degree of confidence as lying northwest of the Long Branch Fault. Aftershock 14 also suggests a surface fault northwest of the Long Branch fault, although there was a high degree of uncertainty associated with its measurement. See, however, the discussion on aftershock N=22, below, which suggests the possibility of a multiple-fault rupture along both the Long Branch and Chopawamsic Faults.

Aftershock N=9
Notice that the marker for the ninth aftershock is located far east of the cluster. The measurements taken for this quake have an extremely high degree of uncertainty. Based on the error circle and the locations of the other epicenters, the true location of the epicenter of the ninth aftershock probably lies much closer to the marker for N=20.

Dip Angle Calculation
The dip of a fault is defined as the angle the fault plane makes with a plane parallel to sea level. Dip can only be measured when the location of earthquake hypocenters can be accurately measured. Hypocenters are different than epicenters in that they take into account the depth of the quake. That is, the epicenter of a quake is the projection of the quake's hypocenter onto the Earth's surface. The hypocenter positions of seven of the aftershocks (N=12, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21 and 22) have been measured to sufficient accuracy to calculate the dip of the Chopawasmic fault. By using the method of projecting the epicenters along the fault line at surface level and determining their horizontal distances from that line, and then comparing each such distance with its respective hypocenter depth, one can calculate that the fault plane dips approximately 60 degrees from the sea level. See: Dip Analysis Diagram. As the dip analysis diagram demonstrates, fault planes are not completely flat (think of an underground mountain face that is both rounded and varies in slope as it descends), so different calculations of dip at points further away from the surface fault line may yield different results, which may not be contradictory, but instead may paint a more accurate picture of the shape of the fault below the surface. One of the data points at N=22 yielded a much shallower dip angle than expected. A discussion of this anomaly follows.

Aftershock N=22
Calculations based on the accurately measured preliminary data for the 22nd aftershock yield a dip angle of 37 degrees of the Chopawamsic fault at that point, which would indicate a much shallower dip than expected/calculated. This aftershock was also the largest quake in the past week. The anomaly at this point probably represents a rupture in the Long Branch Fault, either triggered by the stress on the bedrock of the Chopawamsic Formation from other quakes on the Chopawamsic Fault, or perhaps because the initial magnitude 5.8 mainquake may have been a multiple-fault rupture. Based on data from this single aftershock, and assuming that the quake represents a rupture of the Long Branch Fault, the Long Branch Fault dips at about 65 degrees. The Long Branch Fault is the fault plane that separates the Chopawamsic Formation from the Quantico Formation to the southeast. Based on our current understanding of the Appalachian oregeny, the Long Branch fault plane should be roughly parallel to the Chopawamsic fault plane, as this anomalous data point seems to confirm.

Rupture Depth Calculation
Based on the diagram, the 10th aftershock appears to be the most distant quake from the fault line that has been reasonably accurately constrained. Unfortunately, the depth measured by the USGS was poorly constrained. However, since it appears that the epicenter was approximately 9.4 km from the surface fault, and since the dip angle is approximately 60 degrees (assuming a linearly descending fault plane, and assuming the correct fault is identified), using trigonometry, one can determine that the depth of the rupture at N=10 (and likewise the maximum depth of the entire chain of quakes) is approximately 16 km below the surface.

Rupture Width Calculation
By examining the locations of aftershocks 2 and 17, one can estimate that the approximate width of the rupture is 9 km.

Rupture Surface Area Calculation
The depths of aftershocks appear to fall between 3.6 (N=21) and 16 km (calculated maximum at N=10). The difference in depths result in a projection onto the fault plane of 2 points, approximately 15 km apart along the axis of the dip, based on the calculated dip of 60 degrees. The maximum surface area of the ruptured portion of the fault plane is therefore 9 km (rupture width) times 15 km, or approximately 135 square kilometers. A more accurate estimate for the rupture surface area can be determined by assuming that the shape of the rupture was not that of a rectangle with dimensions as calculated, but rather closer in shape to an oval with major and minor axes of 12 and 9 km respectively. The resulting area would be approximately 106 square kilometers.

Fault Composition
Assuming that the fault at play is the Chopawamsic Fault, the "hanging wall," or the formation of rocks above the fault plane, would be the Chopawamsic Formation. The Chopawamsic Formation consists of interlayered felsic and mafic metavolcanic rocks, such as quartzite, quartzose graywacke, schist, and phyllite. Based on the same assumption, the "foot wall," or formation of rocks below the fault plane, would be the Mine Run Complex, which consists of metavolcanic blocks of schist and phyllite, as well as granitoid blocks of altered tonalite and granodiorite. The Quantico Formation (which hangs over the Chopawamsic Formation at the Long Branch Fault) consists of slate and porphyroblastic schist.

Fault Dynamics
The Chopawamsic Fault is a reverse thrust fault. That is, in an earthquake such as the mainshock in this sequence, the hanging wall moves upward in relation to the footwall. Based on physiographic data from the USGS, the strike angle near the ruptured portion of the fault is approximately 51 degrees east of north.

About the Chopawamsic Formation
It is believed that the Chopawamsic Formation was once an island arc, separated by water from the mainland of North America's ancestral continent mass (much like the Archipelago of Japan in relation to mainland China today). Over time, the arc was thrust into the mainland due to plate tectonics. A detailed discussion of the geological history of Virginia's piedmont can be found in The Geology of Prince William Forest Park, Virginia, published by the Geology department at Northern Virginia Community College's Annandale campus.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit 88 miles SW of DC at 1:51 pm today and we definitely felt it! I was standing up here on the 6th floor of this office building and the shaking at first was light enough that I looked around to see if a particularly heavy person was stomping by. Then it felt like a crowd of very heavy people running (even small children running down the hall in an apartment building can shake the floor, and I was comparing it to that feeling), and then it got even stronger and I realized, with a touch of disbelief (we're not known as an earthquake-prone location and I've never been in one before), that it must be an earthquake, and immediately backed away from the window I was standing next to. Looked around to see everyone else standing up and looking around, and then we all moved into the stairwell. It had pretty much stopped by that time. The fire alarm started going off when we'd gone about 3 floors down, telling everyone to leave the building.

I have to admit, I actually found it rather exciting - I think I was too shocked at first to be scared, and by the time I got over my disbelief, we were all out and safe and the building wasn't falling down and everything was okay and I did kind of feel like "I wanna go on that ride again!" Call me crazy, but there it is.

Eventually they let us back in the building, informing us that we also had the choice to go home. Since I work right next to a large mall and I saw that it, too, had been evacuated, I decided I'd rather stay here and risk aftershocks in the building than get stuck in the ridiculous traffic that would surely ensue. So here I am still. I hope lots of people fled the area earlier and my commute home is awesome.

In the meantime, I figured I'd walk around the office and document the damage. Above you can see some stuff that fell out of the ceiling corners in the stairwell. It's not very big, thankfully.

Here's the USGS's info on the VA quake. Pretty wild that Colorado also experienced a quake today. I hope everyone is okay! I haven't heard any news that anyone was injured, but the news makes it sound like DC is totally freaking out anyway.

Flickr Earthquakes in Japanese Religion

Earthquakes - more horrifying than lightening and typhoons - were thought to be caused by the movements of giant catfish.

While Typhoons and Lightening have patron gods (Fuujin and Raijin respectively) who are respected enough to be appeased, so cataclismic is the history of Japanese earthquake disasters perhaps, that earthquakes are not deified, but attributed to the maleficence of a big black fish.

Japanese catfish, or namazu, are or were thought to be, large lazy, bottom-dwelling fish with little culinary value who, for their part feel jealous of the admiration humans have for other fish species. Earthquakes were thought to be caused by the movements, or jealous malisciousness of giant catfish at the bottom of the sea, or beaneath the ground.

These catfish were held in place however by the god Takemikazuchi who is enshrined at two shrines in Ibaraki prefecture, including Kashima Jinguu (Imperial Shrine) in Kamisu City.

The Shinto deity uses an enourmous rock (whose tip can be seen in the shrine grounds - most of the rock is buried), his sword, or a giant gourd to prevent the catfish from moving.

The rock, the most famous means of keeping the catfish in places, is called a Kanameishi or keystone.

However, in moments of lapse, or while on holiday to Izumo in October - which is called the Godless-Month since all Shinto Kami are said to make the trip to Izumo - the giant catfish moves with horrendus consequence.

In the 6th century book of poems, the Manyoshu (book of ten thousand verses) there is a poem which reads

"The keystone may wobble but it will not become unstuck so long as the God of Kashima Shrine is with us."

Reading this poem three times was believed to be a protection from earthquakes by 19th century dwellers in Edo (Tokyo).

The Giant Catfish was depicted in many Ukiyoe (pictures of the floating world). The genre is known as "Catfish-pictures" but only 300 survive since they were banned by the Edo government.

As well as depicting the subjugation of the giant catfish by the God and the Key stone rock, they also showed (as in the picture above) house builders taking a different attitude to the catfish. In the above picture the group of construction workers top left do not participate in subjugating the Catfish. In another picture construction workers are shown worshiping or thanking the catfish for the profits that they earned after an earthquake. In another picture construction workers are seen helping the catfish in a tug of war between the catfish and Takemikazuchi, helped by representatives of the general population.

After the great Tokyo earthquake of 1855 the catfish is also depicted as being responsible for redistributing wealth from rich to poor, and became regarded as a world repairing deity (Yonaoshi Daimyoujin).

So in the end it is probably true to say that Japanese religion, particularly Shinto, can be trusted to see a positive side to nature, even the most horrific, even in the face of great human loss and tragedy.

The above image is believed to be in the public domain. The above text is my interpretation of internet recsources such as Japanese wikipedia and these two blog posts (in english)
historyofgeology.blogspot.com/2011/01/namazu-earthshaker....
historyofgeology.blogspot.com/2011/03/historic-earthquake...
And the source of the above photo (in Japanese)

Analysis
The theme of a natural calamity being held in check by a giant rock is also found in the Shinto creation myth. Izanami, the primal female that gave birth to all of creation, dies when she gives birth to the god of fire. Izanagi, her husband, kills the god of fire, and goes to visit his wife in the underworld where he finds her rotting form terrifying and flees, trapping Izanami in the underworld with a giant rock. Thus trapped, Izanami promises to kill 1000 people a day. Her husband responds that he will allow for 1500 people a day to be born.

The connection between the belief in the catfish and the Shinto creation myth, is reinforced since it is one of Izanagi's sons, born from the blood of the god of fire (that killed his mother, killed by his father) dripping onto rock, that holds the earthquake subduing keystone in place.

I asked my neighbours for their thoughts concerning the earthquake. One said that with the long history of earthquakes in Japan fear of them is built into their system, and at the same time their destructive power is seen as inevitable.

Perhaps the feeling is that earthquakes like death are going to come. All that one can do is postpone them by villigence and attempt to have faith in natural creation after they are gone.

The earthquake in North East Japan seems to get worse and worse.

Flickr EARTHQUAKE!
Tags: ontario   canada   earthquake   ottawa   june232010
Ottawa was hit today with a "moderate" Earthquake reading 5.7 on the richter scale. The quake centre was 61 kms to the north of the city. For a "moderate" quake it was felt pretty far away; Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, New York, Boston and even West Virginia (!) reported feeling it, though it was less intense the further away you got (news said that quakes in this area of North America radiate quite far - probably because of the rocky Canadian Shield that makes up the base of most of the north-east of North America).

It started as a rumble that just kept getting louder. I was in a meeting and wondered if a plane or a truck going by was making the noise, but I was pretty sure from the start it was really an earthquake because of the sound. Ottawa gets a few earthquakes a year. Usually they are minor, but this one just kept getting louder until the whole building was swaying. At first people were talking over it but it continued until it got so loud everyone stopped. Then BANG! there was this sheering motion/jump like the earth had been struck hard. At that point I was also wondering if it was an explosion, even some kind of terrorist action (the G20 are coming by next week. We've had a few acts of vandalism and one of terrorism already). After that came these rolling aftershocks and the ground felt like it was "rippling" in waves like water, slowly fading.

No reports of deaths, but some injuries. The Parliament Buildings were damaged as were many schools and other buildings throughout the city. The airport reported that, "The planes in our hangar were tilting back and forth, blast doors and hangar doors were chattering with force and the ground rippled under our feet noticeably". The downtown and the city's west end where I live appear to have been hit hardest. Work had us evacuate our campus and we weren't allowed to return to the buildings. We were told to contact our company's emergency number tomorrow to see if the buildings are safe to return to. When I got home I found picture frames all hanging at odd angles and lots of things had fallen off shelves all over the house, such as the air freshener you see in this shot. Some things were damaged from falling or tipping over. Fortunately the gas lines appear to be ok, as well as the fish tank!

When I got out of work there were emergency vehicles running everywhere and you could hear sirens constantly. They've stopped now, but it's been replaced by an eerie silence; the city is quiet now and the roads mostly empty as all government buildings, most business and all schools have been evacuated and the people ordered home while the buildings are safety inspected.

Cleve Earthquake Seismograph Australia - Among Australian cities, Adelaide share with Perth the dubious distinction of being the most dangerous place seismically, although on a world scale the risk is slight and the estimated recurrence period of a 1954-sized earthquake is about 100 years. South Australian earthquake epicentres occur in two main seismic zones. The major zone, within the Adelaide Geosyncline, extends from Kangaroo Island through the Mount Lofty Ranges and Flinders Ranges to Leigh Creek. The second seismic zone is on Eyre Peninsula where some epicentres may be associated with the Lincoln Fault. There are two other zones, one near Kingston SE, and the other in the Simpson Desert in the far north - possibly the most active seismic zone on the Australian continent.

Help Chile Overcome the Earthquake
Chile stepped up efforts to find survivors of an earthquake registering 8.8 magnitude that struck before dawn yesterday, killing more than 700 people, severing the country’s main highway and damaging 1.5 million homes.
The eartquake was centered 200 miles (317 kilometers) southwest of Santiago near the main winemaking region and close to Concepcion, a metropolitan region of more than 500,000 people. Highways and airports were shut by damage and some copper mines closed. The total economic damage may be as much as $30 billion, or about 15 percent of the South American country’s gross domestic product, according to estimates by disaster- scenario modeler Eqecat Inc.
We need your help to overcome the earthquake.

We lost access to electricity, water and telephone, but we're fine now, at least were I live in Santiago.

In this picture, the church of the Sagrados Corazones lost its dome due to the earthquake...

The earthquake was a 6.5 and YES I felt it!!!!!!!!! It was a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG rolling shake. I was sitting at my computer when it started then when everything started rattling & falling & the quake just kept going on and on and on, I decided I'd better crawl under the desk. Then the power went out, of course. It was scary & exciting at the same time!!!! Kitties were terrified of course & ran under the bed immediately. Poor little guys! Jack came out within 15 minutes, Jonah after about 3 hours, but JD not until this morning. Dan wasn't/isn't here. This is his weekend to visit his mom so he missed out on all the fun! I had a lot of breakage, with things falling & nearly all drawers & cupboards opened. I wish I had taken some pictures of the mess but at the time all I could think of was getting the breakage cleaned up before it got dark & the kitties started walking around.

This image is from a location just south of Point Concepcion, California - NOT the city of Concepcion, Chile where the large Chile megathrust earthquake occurred on February 27 2010.

This image has nothing to do with the 8.9 megathrust earthquake near Sendai, Japan in March 2011. This fault is also not suspected of capable of generating any kind of tsunami in the West Coast of the US (California; the Los Angeles area)

This fault is also not suspected to be the one that is most likely responsible for the "Big One" Earthquake in Southern California.

"A very LIGHT one" ???
hahaha whatta a joke ae?
It was the biggest earthquake in New Zealand in almost 80 years! But I trully did not feel it that much.. the earthquake happened at the "west coast" of NZ (check the link for more details: geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/3124785g-maps.html). 12Km deep. Magnitude: 7.8 !!!!
(seven point eight!!!) that's massive!!!! 31 years ago (i guess) we had a 6.7 (im not sure about the magnitude) and more than 200 people died... we were really lucky this one was quite far away!
The waves on the coast got 17cm higher than usual... hehe...

What exactly is the psychological phenominon where things look more evil when lit from below? Does it conjure notions of hell? I recall it being use to great effect in the Silence of the Lambs. Many closeups of Sir Anthony Hopkins featured sharp white reflections closer to the bottoms of his eyeball. weblogs.variety.com/thompsononhollywood/images/2008/02/05...

Continuing to fine-tune the series. Switched over to texture maps from NASA's Blue Marble collection thanks to a recommendation from binarymillenium. visibleearth.nasa.gov/view_set.php?categoryID=2363

I ended up refining the textures by hand because I noticed the ocean elevations texture (the one I am using to make the ocean basin more reflective than above sea level land) doesn't represent lakes or rivers at all. Sadly, the rivers show as mostly beige or green in the large earth texture map so I was unable to get the Amazon and Nile rivers properly reflective. Perhaps there is another source with which I could combine?

The NASA collection has elevation data for the entire earth, not just the parts that stick up out of the water.

Eventually, text tags and timestamp-based animations will be added, but for now I am just enjoying the huge speed increase I am seeing with C++. The textures I am using are 4096x2048. All of the lighting calculations are being done on the GPU. It has no framerate issues at all at this stage. Very exciting times.

Made with a C++ framework being developed by a team at Barbarian Group, headed up by Andrew Bell ( www.drawnline.net ).

In working on the Java landscape engine, I started to finally realize and accept that I should be doing it all in C++, the demon bastard language that has claimed many an art-school graduate. Luckily for me, Andrew and his gang of geniuses have been cranking away on a fantastic C++ cozy that has made the transition from Java 95% painless.

This particular project, which is being made as a way for me to take baby steps instead of diving right into the deep end (mixed metaphor!), is a visualization of the last 7 days of earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 and higher.

Instead of actually reading about bumpmaps and learning it the proper way, I did it by trying every arithmetic operator one by one until I got something interesting. Three cheers for oblivious discovery! Now if only I could accidentally understand how to use quaternions.

The 2006 Hengchun earthquake occurred on Tuesday December 26, 2006 at 12:25 UTC (20:25 local time), with an epicenter off the southwest coast of Taiwan, approximately 22.8 km west southwest of Hengchun, Pingtung County, Taiwan, with an exact hypocenter 21.9 km deep in the Luzon Strait (21.89° N 120.56° E), which connects the South China Sea with the Philippine Sea.

The earthquake not only caused casualties and building damages, but also damaged several undersea cables, disrupting telecommunication services in various parts of Asia.

Here in Southern California we occasionally get earthquakes. We had one today at 11:41 in the morning.

I was playing with my camera's aperture settings, taking some pictures of coins. This particular photo had a 20-second shutter speed at f/36. According to the photo's EXIF data, the shutter opened at 11:41:28.

While the shutter was open, the earthquake hit. The earthquake rocked the tripod slightly as you can see here in the photo.

I don't remember ever having a still-image camera record an earthquake.

Update 1: It was a 5.4 magnitude earthquake and the official time was 11:42. My camera's clock must be slightly off.

Update 2: This photo was #428 on Flickr's Explore page on July 29, 2008. Woohoo!

Update 3: I found my photo was used to accompany an article, July 29, 2008, on the Ron's Log website.

Update 4: I found out this photo was used to accompany the article Money-Making Week on Deal Seeking Mom on October 20, 2008.

We felt the Szechuan earthquake here this afternoon at about 2:45. Actually, I was at the dentist and didn't feel anything, so when I came out, I was puzzled about why so many people were standing around, looking up at the buildings. At first I thought it was a fire or someone threatening to jump, but I didn't see anything. Then I asked someone, and they said there was an earthquake! For the next half hour or so I stood around in the park on Zunyi Lu with several thousand people who had been evacuated from their offices or didn't dare go home. At one point, some clouds moved quickly in the sky, in back of a tall building, giving it the appearance of swaying. Some people panicked, and ther was a stampede of like one hundred people who ran in the opposite direction. One girl fell down. Nothing else bad happened here, other than not being able to get a phone connection because too many people were dialing out at the same time. Not everyone was so lucky, though. Apparently several thousand people were killed (or are currently missing) close to the epicenter.

The recent Lincolnshire earthquake severely damaged the sipre of the church at Waltham on the Wolds in next-door Leicestershire.

Earthquake

Waking
from our peaceful slumber
by shaking wall
and trembling tiles,
quaking deep
within the ground,
unusual
in these placid isles.

Trapped in time
like flies in amber,
our thoughts
go ever circling round,
as life itself,
the yearly seasons,

yet still
we search
for hidden reasons.

Wow, we had an earthquake last night! I was lying on the sofa at the time, so got the full 'up and down' effect - it quite spooked me at the time. First there were two main rumbles, which seemed to move the sofa up and down an inch or so, then I watched a few aftershocks ripple through the top of a cup of tea I was drinking. Largest one for 30 years apparently at 5.2 on the richter scale.

More here: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7266136.stm

I slept right through the last one I experienced in Tokyo, Japan. I didn't even stir!

I was attending a meeting at around 5.00 pm today at my office at Rajaji Salai aka North Beach Road opposite Beach Station. Captain Manoharan from the Security Department entered the Conference Hall and asked us to vacate the Building. As I proceeded out of the office, I came to know that tremors rocked the building and top floors experienced the tremors. Poople in the top floors who experienced the tremors were disturbed. While I was proceeding to the Beach Station, I learnt that the nearby Collector Office also experienced tremors and the staff were asked to vacate the building. When I called home, my wife said that the news tickers in TV informed that Nungambakkam and Koyambedu area experienced tremors.

Sify quotes PTI as below

"An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale shook the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of Chennai today triggering panic among residents.

With its epicentre near Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the quake occurring at around 1700 hrs lasted a few seconds and rocked several parts of Chennai including the busy T Nagar, Nugambakkam and Koyambedu areas, Met office sources and the police told PTI.

Employees working in a multi-storeyed building in Venkatnarayana Road in T Nagar rushed out of office as they experienced the tremor, police said.

However, there is no immediate report about any loss of life or property due to the quake."

The TV channels reported about the quake felt at Nungambakkam and parts of T Nagar

Day before Halloween 07, around 8pm(ish) I was on my way out to Target when the earth shifted and decided to remind California that us sinners will one day be swallowed in a large fault.

Picture taken at a Target shortly after the earthquake-yes it is a shitty res, all I had was my cell phone.

The extent of damage of the earthquake that hit a half hour ago... Our Wii sensor bar fell off the TV (perhaps aided by a sliding Simpsons DVD box?).

I just got home from a long day at work and a stop off at McDonald's. I was going to put the mail on my desk in the study and I felt a big shaking. At first I thought I must have opened the door much more violently than I intended... then I realized it was lasting too long for that. I think it lasted 5-10 seconds, but I can't be sure. (On the plus side, since I was opening the door I was already in the doorway--one of the lessons I remember from childhood in Alaska.)

This was by far the largest earthquake I've felt in California. The other one I felt at home was also when I was in the study. I've felt a couple at work, but those usually turned out to be minor (since it's a high-rise).

Benson was sitting at the table in the dining room--the same room he was in when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit. He and his Mom claim that it felt bigger than that earthquake.

I couldn't see how that was the case; I'd heard that earthquake lasted a lot longer than this one seemed to, and there wasn't really any damage (other than a misplaced Wii sensor bar).

So I checked out the USGS site, and at first it had a question mark where the magnitude should be, I guess since they hadn't confirmed it. Even without the magnitude, though, it was clear why it may have felt so strong--the earthquake was located in the hills between San Jose and Milpitas, fairly close to us.

When the USGS site was updated, Benson and his mom couldn't believe it was just a 5.6. (What's cool is you can see how other people rated it.

Benson said that Wally was barking like mad during the whole thing, but I have no recollection of it. I was focused too much on the creaking and undulating (probably enhanced by the fact the house has a crawl space underneath).

Tahoe just had a 5.2 earthquake. We had a good jolt here in Sacramento, with water splashing out of my parents' pool.

However, you can see that the shaking didn't disturb the naps of Heather and McKenzie. Just after the earthquake hit, I turned around in my desk chair (column deadline day) and took this picture.
