Flickr Sovremenny class destroyer
Tags: lego   class   destroyer   sovremenny
The Sovremenny class destroyer is the principal anti-surface warship of the Russian Navy. The Soviet designation for the class was Project 956 Sarych (Buzzard).

Its primary role is to attack enemy warships while also providing sea and air defense for warships and transports under escort. It complements the Udaloy-class destroyers in anti-submarine operations.

It was used in the sovjet navy, later until today in the russian navy and China bought some vessels too, which are still in use there.
Have a look at the complete album.

Just pretend those upside down 1x1 round studs have black minifig hands in them. Because they would IRL.

So here is the Martel and Clovis, a cruiser and destroyer respectively. They've got an assortment of guns, some life boats, a seaplane launch, cool stripes... Yeah. Not too much to say here, these are just my usual style of boat. Not happy with the cruiser guns either, but I couldn't figure out anything else.

Good lord, even simpliest edits take me multiples of "10 minutes"...

I am actually considering stealing the thing back from the museum we have the exhibition in to take it for professional photo session :D

Engines were probably the toughest "detail" to make, a round bowl of 15-cm diameter, with a large hole in the middle for the bulbs (which will come sometime in the future).

Greebles near the edges are worth mentioning, because they were made in about 5 minutes: some bricks as background, two flexes and bunch of clips. Gets the job done for now ;)

So here she is - hastily in barely finished state. Our exhibition at Swarzewo has just started so there was no time to continue, but what is important is done. Destroyer Azama
(The Azama Class Destroyer is based on the real world Akizuki class Destroyer)

The Azama class is considered to be the most powerful, effective and useful class of destroyers Japan fielded during the Second Russo-Japanese War and it’s considered by many historians and admirals as the best Destroyer built during the 40s. Some Historians also classify the “Azama”s as Light Cruisers.

They mounted the new 127mm gun dual-purpose gun in four twin mounts, having both a very high rate of fire as well as a powerful and accurate round. All turrets were also controlled by radar, perfect for night combat operations. The ship also had six triple AA 47mm auto-cannons for AA defence, twelve 610mm torpedo tubes in two sextuple positions, one 610mm anti-submarine mortar, two Depth Charge Throwers, two rear rails for Depth Charges and rails for a total of 100 mines. The ship had a maximum speed of 39knots as well as a range of 10 000km at 14 knots.

Highly effective and built with American help, the “Azama”s were heavily used during the Second Russo-Japanese War, becoming extremely famous during night operations. Some ships were also equipped with a small catapult for a floatplane.

Seaplane Tender Akitsushima
(This ship is almost a copy of the real-world Akitsushima, with a few improvements);

The Akitsushima was a small Seaplane Tender, built to support, refuel and repair Seaplanes during their long-range operations. The Seaplanes carried by the Akitsushima had long range (allowing them to patrol large areas) and radar (enabling the Seaplanes to work as primitive AWACs).

Okay, I know this is really just a building in London…and it’s not really one of the Galactic Empire’s space vessels. However, the image does remind me a bit of the opening scenes of Star Wars, so I ran with that.

So; it’s Friday at last, and I have a long day ahead before heading out to Wales this evening for a weekend of camping, hiking and photo taking. I’m hoping the weather is worse than when I was in Wales a few weeks ago (nothing but bright blue sky, as those who view my daily photos would know from my moaning), but better than it’s looking at this moment in time (it’s raining – and I’m never happy).

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

(I guess he never got the memo!)

This whole build came about thanks to my crazy boss Chris Stolte (above left) who is also a LEGO fan. One day the Super Star Destroyer box just appeared on my desk :-). At first we talked about having people at work help construct it. Then we kind of forgot about it. But the product release that our company has been focused on for the past year is code-named "Kraken", so I figured it'd be fun to customize the set around that theme.

When not appearing at conventions, the model's permanent home will be the head offices of Tableau Software in Fremont, Seattle. So if you wanna see it in person, you'd better come work for us! We have crazy shit like this going on all the time.

Source, a very fierce and aggressive organisation of ecologists had to accept the help of pirate tribal factions in order to not get overwhelmed by their conflict with mega-corporations.
The result was a military collaboration in exchange for goods. Eventually that collaboration backfired and the pirates, unsatisfied by the deal, stopped communications and left with quite a small fleet.
These pirate ships, fielding both tribal colors and the Source green, though joyfull to the eye were not a happy sight for any respectable captain. While their firepower is not to be underestimated the biggest worry among captains was the reputation that pirates losing a battle would ram these at full speed on enemy ships and stations.

Friday afternoon build!! I'm now working as a freelance and have much more time to build, which is very very enjoyable. I received an order from cracklin this morning, which contained those blue octogonal parts. I was supposed to be sorting all afternoon and it got out of control.

The Rogue Destroyer Shooting Brake - the result of a collaboration between the automobile company Rogue Automotive and the Paris-based coach-building company Figani & Foloschi.

F&F took ten Rogue Destroyers and removed the spoilers, adding a sleek roofline to the rear lights, which dipped under the canopy. While still definitely a Destroyer, F&F added some classic chrome detailing along the beltline and wheels, which made a beautiful contrast with the blacked-out windows and hellish headlights. The engine was kept intact.

Brand new Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan begins sea trials off Scotland.

Duncan, the Royal Navy’s sixth and final powerful new Type 45 Destroyer, has put to sea for the first time (August 31) for trials where a blend of Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence and BAE Systems personnel will put her through her paces.

Following her departure from BAE System’s Scotstoun shipyard in Glasgow, Duncan quickly set about testing her speed and manoeuvrability, which will see the 7500-tonne destroyer taken to over 30 knots and turning very tight figure-of-eights.

Duncan will also spend four weeks at sea trialling her power and propulsion systems as well as her highly capable weapons systems. A second period of sea trials, set to take place later in the year, will test Duncan’s combat systems and sensors in order to ensure she joins the other Type 45s already commissioned and based in Portsmouth, in pristine condition next year.

Captain Henry Duffy, Captain Surface Ships, said:, This is a significant milestone in Duncan's programme. We wish her every success as we look forward to welcoming her to join the rest of her sister ships into the Portsmouth Flotilla next year.”

My take on Vader's flagship from The Empire Strikes Back: the Star Destroyer Executor. Nineteen kilometers from stem to stern, Executor is over 11 times the length of a typical Imperial Star Destroyer (also shown, for scale).

The Lego Group sells an Executor set, but at $400 and four feet in length, it's a bit impractical. Though this 22-inch version has taken me weeks and countless revisions, I'm pretty happy with the result. I'll take better pictures when time permits.

So here is a microscale attempt at a space vessel which I imagine to be a destroyer class vessel. It really doesn't quite feel refined/finished to me - but I'm assuming it's because I'm not that great at microscale. I will keep trying though.

Bigger than most destroyers this ship was specifically design to escort the massive Ultaran Dreadnoughts. They field a good firepower with their torpedo launchers and rapid firing coupled autocannon turrets. These destroyers are among the best of their class.

Type 45 destroyer HMS Daring is pictured in heavy seas in the Middle East following the handover of patrol duties from HMS Argyll.

HMS Daring is the first of the Navy’s six £1bn Type 45 destroyers and she is the first of class to deploy. In preparation she conducted work-ups with an American Carrier battle Group back in 2010 and gone through a series of upgrade programmes to ensure she met the high standards required for deploying RN units.

Daring is designed to create a defensive shield around a task force – and troops ashore – protecting them from air attack. The ship was launched on a bitterly cold day at BAE Systems’ yard in Scotstoun on the Clyde in February 2006 by her sponsor, the Countess of Wessex.

Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer HMS Daring.

HMS Daring has participated in a Combined Maritime Forces focussed operation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, Operation Scimitar Anzac.

The Type 45 and her Ship's Company worked as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, one of three Task Forces within the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), a 25 nation international partnership who coordinate their collective military and multi-agency assets to safeguard and build capacity in Maritime Security operations in the Gulf Region.

CTF 150 is currently made up of Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Pakistani Australian New Zealand, and Yemini Naval Forces. The group is presently led by a combined Royal Australian and New Zealand Navy Battle staff The next rotation will see the Pakistani Navy take the lead.

Focussed Operation Scimitar Anzac saw the task force, made up of HMS Daring, HMAS Parramatta, PNS Babur and the RFA Wave Knight, operating near the Bab El Mendeb Straits off Yemen.

HMS Daring is currently deployed for a seven-month deployment to continue the Royal Navy's long-term presence East of the Suez.

The ship will be acting as part of the Royal Navy's standing commitment in the Middle East, providing a range of capabilities from counter piracy to reassurance of the UK's allies in the region. The area of operations is huge, covering the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Gulf.

Bokeh (日本語): n a Japanese term for the subjective aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas of a photographic image.

The root of the Japanese word boke or bokeh actually means "nothing good." The meaning is similar to “confused” or “dizzy” and is used to describe mental states of the same nature. Many new photographers confuse bokeh with the distracting hard edged illuminated balls created by out of focus pinpoints of light in the background of an image. For more information on bokeh, please see this pdf file composed by Carl Ziess. If it's not enough to make your stomach churn with graphs and physics, then perhaps the musk from a deceased skunk should be applied to your lover's errogenous zones.

The lovely Leilani challenged me to bag some bokeh as my "Get Pushed" theme. If the truth be told, I don't really care for the little bokey balls that seem to bounce all over Explore like light bouncing through a $20 bargain bin Tamaron lens. I cranked down my aperture past ƒ8 years ago. I seek control in my images, not serendipity.

But still, I do own a couple of ƒ1.8 lenses, a 50 and an 85mm. I use each of them for their clairity, their light gathering ability, and their ability to isolate a subject against a wash of color. So, I took my beloved 28-70 ƒ2.8 Nikkor off my camera and clicked on the venerable 85mm. My plan is/was to bag a stranger or two (my challenge for Leilani) with the 85mm. Plans do go awry however, and since I am on call this weekend, I felt the need to hedge my bets. Plus, it's over 100 degrees outside and I need a 365 image today.

So, I strung up Christmas lights across the black wall in Studio d'Xavier. I moved my camera and tripod 45 feet away and I placed a dialed down monolight with a soft diffuser behind it. Once I focused on myself, a scant six feet in front of the lens at ƒ1.8, I had instant bokey balls. All that remained was some means of expressing how I feel about the little balls of light. I don't own a gas mask, so I modified an old paintball mask to deal with the noxious balls of light.

Lessons learned:
1. Leilani bagged her first stranger before I bagged bokeh. She's both quick with her lens and a wonderful photographer. Sharp eye, incisive wit. I'm going to keep her as a contact.
2. I need to clean either my sensor or that 85mm lens. I think it's the sensor.
3. I have enough room in Studio d'Xavier to manufacture bokeh if needed.
4. I really need a gas mask for self expression.
5 A weird mask across 75% of an image can visually balance the remaining 25% of bouncing bokey balls.

Thanks for the push Leilani, I plan to keep the 85mm on my camera for a few days and chase down some bokeh in the more conventional fashion.

Many thanks to the awesome Ewa for the tribute pic.

Enlisted in the Rhimhölde Quadrant, this mobile weapon is quick to deploy and highly maneuverable in the field. Communications and radar devices are securly mounted underneath the armored carapace and 360° turret areas to safeguard against stray enemy fire. Power is supplied by three Brahm-Nucleo Regenerators, one for the main drive train, and two to power the main weapon, providing a continous and uninterrupted stream of burning plasma up to 200 yards with up to 70° of arc. During the Crystasis Wars, Yeltvek troops were often seen retreating when only two or three of these vehicles began a forward offensive.

Named CERBERUS by the Alliance because of its three massive front bridges, this 2 km long ship is an invasion capital ship. The CERBERUS is categorized as "hive" which are spaceships that constantly create new soldiers and crafts, basically moving factories. This particular hive is known to always carried at least 100 fighters including squadrons of FANTOMES and LEVIATHANS.
It is armed with 16 heavy plasma turrets and uses a "death ray" cannon as main weapon.

Extreme caution is to apply when engaging the CERBERUS and the Alliance recommands all isolated ships to take flight in case of encounter.

Flickr German Tank Destroyer Marder III. 1942. Немецкая самоходка ''Мардер III''
Tags: germantankdestroyermarderiii1942немецкаясамоходкамардерiii
Moscow. Poklonnaya Gora. WWII Museum. Москва. Поклонная гора. Музей ВОВ.

The Marder III is the name for a series of World War II German tank destroyers built on the chassis of the Panzer 38(t). The German word Marder means "marten" in English. They were in production from 1942 to 1944 and served on all fronts until the end of the war.

History

Even in the early stages of Operation Barbarossa, the Wehrmacht already felt the need for a more mobile and more powerful anti-tank solution than the existing towed anti-tank guns such as Pak 36 or tank destroyers like the Panzerjäger I. This need became urgent in June 1941, when anti-tank shells failed to penetrate the armour of new Soviet tanks like the T-34 and KV-1.
As an interim solution, it was decided to use captured French vehicles like the Lorraine (Marder I), obsolete tanks such as German Panzer II (Marder II), and Czech-supplied 38(t) (Marder III) as the base for makeshift tank destroyers. The result was the Marder series, which were armed with either captured Soviet 76.2mm F-22 Model 1936 divisional field guns, or 75 mm PaK 40 anti-tank guns for later versions. Due to weight and space constraints of these small chassis, Marder series were not fully armored. Weak armor protection was provided only for the front and sides. All Marder series had open tops. Some were issued with canvas tops to protect the crew from the elements.
Combat history

The Marder III Ausf. H on the Eastern Front.
The various Marder IIIs fought on all fronts of the war, with the Sd.Kfz. 139 being used mainly at the Eastern Front, though some also fought in Tunisia. Even in February 1945 some 350 Ausf M were still in service.
The Marder IIIs were used by the Panzerjäger Abteilungen of the Panzer divisions of both the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS, as well as several Luftwaffe units, like the Hermann Göring division.
The Marders were mechanically reliable, as with all vehicles based on the Czechoslovak 38t chassis. Their firepower was sufficient to destroy the majority of Soviet tanks on the battlefield at combat range.
The Marder's weaknesses were mainly related to survivability. The combination of a high silhouette and open-top armor protection made them vulnerable to indirect artillery fire. The armor was also quite thin, making them highly vulnerable to enemy tanks and to close-range machinegun fire.
The Marders were not assault vehicles or tank substitutes; the open top meant that operations in urban areas or other close-combat situations were very risky. They were best employed in defensive or overwatch roles. Despite their mobility they did not replace the towed antitank guns.
In March 1942, before Marder III appeared, Germany already started production of StuG III assault gun with comparable anti-tank capability (StuG III Ausf. F and later variants). These were fully armored vehicles, built in much greater numbers than vulnerable Marder III. Among many German fully armored tank destroyers, also one based on Panzer 38(t) chassis was built in numbers since 1944: the Jagdpanzer 38(t) (known as Hetzer). The weakly armored Marder series were phased out of production, however, they served until the end of the conflict.

HMS Diamond, the third of six formidable air defence warships being built for the Royal Navy, arrived in her home port of Portsmouth for the first time on Wednesday September 22nd.

Built by BAE Systems, the Type 45 destroyer was launched in November 2007 from its Govan shipyard in Glasgow. Final stages of construction and systems integration were then carried out at its Scotstoun yard in the city and the ship has since been carrying out sea trials in Scottish waters.

For her arrival into Portsmouth, HMS Diamond passed the Round Tower, Old Portsmouth, at 7am. Later in the day in the Naval Base the ship will be formally handed to the Royal Navy by BAE Systems in a ceremony on the ship’s flight deck.

During the night before the assault on Hoth the Imperial troops had to land a Star Destroyer to speed up the process of placing AT-AT's and massive amount of other gear on the planet surface. The icy moonlit landing site had to be inspected by foot to make sure it can take the immense weight of a Star Destroyer without cracking.

These four guys were in charge of that task. Can you imagine the pressure? No wonder they don't talk much...

I was going to upload this shot on May 21, the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back's official premiere. Couldn't wait, because I wanted to upload something on may the fourth, too. More fun this way. :D

Looks good on black.

After some time searching around, I never found a great-looking minifig-scale driodeka. So, I decided to make my own.

Destroyer droids are annoying buggers that roll around in a circular formation. When a target is sighted, they unroll into combat form. Armed with powerful shields and rapid-firing weapons, they are some of the most feared droids in the CIS army and my personal favorite droid.

Arms attached with Brickarms Monopods.

Flickr “Destroyer-Class” Light Steam Railship Mk. XXXIII (front)
Tags: train   war   lego   military   great   steam   destroyer   machines   steampunk   railship
At the outbreak of the Great Steam War, several nations modified existing steam trains with armor, automatic rifles, and even light cannons in order for them to serve as military transports, most often for hauling men and vehicles to the front lines. Trains from opposite sides would seldom meet each other; and if they did, neither would take enough damage to be disabled. Eventually, military commanders realized the offensive combat potential of war trains, or “railships” as they came to be known. The Destroyer-Class railships were the first of many classes used in the Great Steam War.
The Destroyer-Class is armed with two medium cannons and one rear-mounted automatic rifle and is equipped with a special ram vehicle to clear the track of disabled train cars without the use of a crane.

The wheel below the upper turret turns both turrets in unison. Moves on its own by means of an electric motor in the tender.

During World War 2, the Tribals saw considerable action in every theatre of war from the Arctic to Okinawa and their exploits are legend in naval history. In the fall of 1943, HAIDA operated out of Scapa Flow with the Royal Navy to assist with convoy escorting duties to North Russia on the Murmansk run. On Dec 26, 1943 she was present at the Battle of North Cape when the German battle cruiser SCHARNHORST was sunk by the British Home Fleet. Early in 1944, HAIDA joined the Tenth Destroyer Flotilla operating out of Plymouth England. The objective of this mixed force of British, Canadian and Polish warships was to clear enemy shipping off the coast of France in anticipation of the D-Day landings. During this period, HAIDA achieved great fame by destroying more enemy vessels than any other ship in the R.C.N. It was also during this period that her sister ship H.M.C.S. ATHABASKAN was sunk with the loss of 128 lives.

Following a refit in Halifax in late 1944, HAIDA rejoined the Fleet in Scapa Flow in early 1945 and spent the rest of the war operating in the Arctic and on the coast of Norway. After the surrender of Germany, the ship was overhauled to operate in the Pacific but the war ended before her conversion was completed. In 1947, HAIDA was recommissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy and worked on the East Coast and in the Arctic. In November 1949, HAIDA was doing maneuovers off the coast of Bermuda when an American B-29 bomber went down. She was first on the scene and lowered her seaboat once again to rescue the downed airmen. As a result, the ship's company received many letters of congratulations. The co-pilot of the aircraft was originally from Texas and for this reason, HAIDA's crew were bestowed with certificates naming them 'Honourary Texans'.
