Flickr President Obama Signs "The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act"

On Wednesday, President Obama signed legislation criminalizing hate crimes against gay people, 11 years after the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard

The Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act is attached to a defense authorization bill. It is named after Matthew Shepard, a gay college student tortured and killed in 1998, and James Byrd Jr., a man who was chained to a pickup truck and dragged to his death the same year for being black.

This anti-hate legislation - specifically addressing hate crimes targeted towards the GLBT population - has been introduced 5 times since April 2001. It has failed in every attempt. President Bush was adamantly opposed to this bill and it is clear he would veto any legislation of this nature.

With President Obama's support the legislation was passed and signed. It is a major victory for civil rights. The next item on the agenda will be getting rid of "Don't Ask Don't Tell". After that, there will be legislation regarding discrimination in employment for the GLBT community, then the hardest task of all, getting rid of the "Defense of Marriage Act".

Top left: First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, a champion of the American Civil Rights Movement and chairperson of the committee that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Top Right: Councilman Harvey Milk of San Francisco, who efforts led to the passage of a civil rights bill that outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation. The ordinance was called the "most stringent and encompassing in the nation". Milk, the City's first openly gay councilperson, was assassinated November 27, 1978.

Lower Left: Matthew Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998) was a student at the University of Wyoming who was tortured and murdered near Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. He died at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado, on October 12 from severe head injuries.

During the trial, witnesses stated that Shepard was targeted because he was gay. Shepard's murder brought national, as well as international, attention to the issue of hate crime legislation at the state and federal levels.

Lower Right: President Barack Obama who spoke at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner on October 10, 2009, addressing concerns of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community (text of speech below).

And this is the reason why I care so much about getting DoMA repealed.

See the thing is, Augustine is Canadian, and he's here under a work visa. While DoMA is in effect, I am not allowed to sponsor him for a visa myself. In fact, under DoMA, our getting married -- even here in Massachusetts -- would invalidate his visa, sending him straight back to Canada.

In three years when this visa expires, there is a very real possibility that I will have to make a very difficult choice: my partner or my country.

So...it's not about religion. It's not about tradition.

It's about making sure that each of America's citizens are treated equally under the law.

The Gay Agenda:
1) KEEP WARM!
2) Let people know that married gays only get 25% of the rights (yes, even in Massachusetts) that straight folks get because of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

The only left-handed gay Jew in Congress!

Married gay couples in Massachusetts still only receive 25% of the rights of straight married couples because the Defense of Marriage Act keeps us from Federal benefits. I cannot receive my wife's social security and we cannot file federal taxes as married, to name just a few of the benefits we don't have. (If we leave Mass and one of us has to go to the hospital, we will be treated as strangers).

As his husband and son watched, this Episcopal priest apologized to the crowd for the harm and hatred brought on gays by men of the cloth. The crowd was truly moved.

This picture really sums up Mayor Menino for me. This is exactly what I think of when I think of him. Well, this and the recording of him mumbling a "welcome" to visitors through the loudspeakers as you stand on the conveyor belts slowly trudging through Logan Airport.
