Then I heard somewhere that the Red Mountains looked pretty cool with light from sunset or sunrise. So I decided to combine those conditions and got up for a sunrise, when the lighting would be decent and the water calm enough to reflect the mountains (and the temperature cold enough that there was steam on the surface of the lake, apparently). This is a beautiful stretch of the river with a paved road most of the way from Dotsero to State Bridge. This would be a great bicycle road, although it isn't all paved. The natural course of the river flows into the Gulf of California, but the heavy use of the river as an irrigation source for the Imperial Valley has desiccated the lower course of the river in Mexico such that it no longer consistently reaches the sea. Grand Canyon National Park is one of America's oldest national parks and is located in Arizona. Within the park lies the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, considered to be one of the major natural wonders of the world. The park covers 1,902 mi². Most visitors to the park come to the South Rim, arriving on Arizona Highway 64. The Highway enters the park through the South Entrance, near Tusayan, Arizona, and heads eastward, leaving the park through the East Entrance. Park headquarters are at Grand Canyon Village, a short distance from the South Entrance, being also the center of the most popular viewpoints. Some thirty miles of the South Rim are accessible by road. A much smaller venue for tourists is found on the North Rim, accessed by Arizona Highway 67. There is no connection by road between the two, except via the Navajo Bridge, entailing a five-hour drive. The rest of the Grand Canyon is extremely rugged and remote, although many places are accessible by pack trail and backcountry roads. The Grand Canyon itself—really an extensive system of tributary canyons— is neither the largest or deepest canyon in the world, but is valued for the combination of large size, depth, and the exposed layering of colorful rocks dating back to Precambrian times. It was created by erosion from the Colorado River and its tributaries. When you are up so high in the Rocky Mountains it is possible to see many such dramas all around. So many times I saw at least 3 areas where the skies poured down rain in a hit and miss swath of pure and direct rainfall. Now you may wonder that I find this so beautiful, but remember that I have been living in Phoenix, Arizona for 4 years now and let me tell you, rain is a beautiful thing. In May, 1989 my sister and I were taking the train to Grand Junction, Colorado. We got off in Denver to do some sightseeing during the station stop there. Well, we "saw too much" and missed the train. A Continental Airlines flight to Grand Junction was our alternative. We had a wonderfully scenic flight, never climbing very high above the mountains on the 275 mile flight. Here we are over the resort town of Glenwood Springs on the Colorado River, 185 miles west of Denver. Interstate 70 follows the north shore of the river (we are looking north here) and the former Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad (now Union Pacific) passes through town on the south shore. The Amtrak California Zephyr (which we should be riding!) follows this rail route. I'll be staying in Glenwood Springs for three days on my vacation next month. Looking forward to enjoying the town and surroundings from ground level, as well as the pool.
