35 – Cochran Residence – 2248 S Hobart Blvd – 1907

George Ira Cochran, who lived at 2249 S Harvard Blvd, built for his mother and sister this house, directly behind his own. It is a charming Dutch Colonial cottage, with a Gambrel roof. The house is currently owned by the First AME Church on Harvard Blvd, and is next in line for restoration. The widow Catherine (or Katherine) Moore had been married to Dr. Rutherford D Moore, a prominent Methodist pastor, a missionary to Japan, the first to translate the bible into Japanese, and a dean of the University of Southern California. Her daughter, Mrs. C I D Moore, lived next door at 2242 S Hobart Blvd.

West Adams Heights

“Nowadays we scarcely notice the high stone gates which mark the entrances on Hobart, Harvard, and Oxford streets, south of Washington Boulevard. For one thing, the traffic is too heavy, too swift; and then, again, the gates have been obscured by intrusions of shops and stores. At the base of the stone pillars appears the inscription “West Adams Heights.” There was a time when these entranceways were formidable and haughty, for they marked the ways to one of the first elite residential areas in Los Angeles. . . In the unplanned early-day chaos of Los Angeles, West Adams Heights was obviously something very special, an island in an ocean of bungalows—approachable, but withdrawn and reclusive—one of the few surviving examples of planned urban elegance of the turn of the century.”

- Carey McWilliams, “The Evolution of Sugar Hill,” Script, March, 1949: 30.

Today West Adams Heights is still obviously something special. The past sixty years, however, have not been kind. In 1963 the Santa Monica Freeway cut through the heart of West Adams Heights, dividing the neighborhood, obscuring its continuity. In the 1970’s the city paved over the red brick streets and removed the ornate street lighting. After the neighborhood’s zoning was changed to a higher density, overzealous developers claimed several mansions for apartment buildings. Despite these challenges, however, “The Heights,” as the area was once known, has managed to regain some of its former elegance.

The West Adams Heights tract was laid out in 1902, in what was then a wheat field on the western edge of town. Although the freeway now creates an artificial barrier, the original neighborhood boundaries were Adams Boulevard, La Salle Ave, Washington Boulevard, and Western Avenue. Costly improvements were integrated into the development, such as 75-food wide boulevards (which were some of the first contoured streets not to follow the city grid), lots elevated from the sidewalk, ornate street lighting, and large granite monuments with red-brass electroliers at the entrance to every street. These upgrades increased the lot values, which helped ensure the tract would be an enclave for the elite.

One early real estate ad characterized the neighborhood stating: “West Adams Heights needs no introduction to the public: it is already recognized as being far superior to any other tract. Its high and slightly location, its beautiful view of the city and mountains make t a property unequaled by any other in the city.”

The early residents’ were required to sign a detailed restrictive covenant. This hand-written document required property owners to build a “first-class residence,” of at least two stories, costing no less than two-thousand dollars (at a time when a respectable home could be built for a quarter of that amount, including the land), and built no less than thirty-five feet from the property’s primary boundary. Common in early twentieth century, another clause excluded residents from selling or leasing their properties to non-Caucasians.

By the mid 1930’s, however, most of the restrictions had expired. Between 1938 and 1945 many prominent African-Americans began to make “The Heights” their home. According to Carey McWilliams, West Adams Heights became known “Far and wide as the famous Sugar Hill section of Los Angeles,” and enjoyed a clear preeminence over Washington’s smart Le Droit Park, St. Louis’s Enright Street, West Philadelphia, Chicago’s Westchester, and Harlem’s fabulous Sugar Hill.

West Adams Heights, now also known as Sugar Hill, played a major role in the Civil Rights movement in Los Angeles. In 1938 Norman Houston, president of the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company, and an African-American, purchased a home at 2211 South Hobart Boulevard. Legal Action from eight homeowners quickly ensued. During that period, other prominent African-Americans began to make Sugar Hill their home – including actress Hattie McDaniels, dentists John and Vada Summerville, actress Louise Beavers, band leader Johnny Otis, and performers Pearl Baily and Ethel Waters, and many more. On December 6, 1945, the “Sugar Hill Cases” were heard before Judge Thurmond Clark, in LA Superior Court. He made history by become the first judge in America to use the 14th Amendment to disallow the enforcement of covenant race restrictions. The Los Angeles Sentinel quoted Judge Clark: “This court is of the opinion that it is time that [African-Americans] are accorded, without reservations and evasions, the full rights guaranteed them under the 14th Amendment.” Gradually, over the last century people of nearly ever background have made historic West Adams their home.

The northern end of West Adams Heights is now protected as part of the Harvard Heights Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ). The Historic West Adams area of Los Angeles (which includes West Adams Heights) boasts the highest concentration of turn-of-the-century homes west of the Mississippi, as well as the highest concentration of National Historic Landmarks, National Register of Historic Places, National Historic Districts, State Historic Landmarks, Los Angeles Cultural-Historic Monuments, and Historic Preservation Overlay Zones in the city. The entirety of West Adams Heights should be nominated as a National Register Historic District, for the quality of homes, the prominence of the architects, notoriety of the people who lived in the neighborhood, and the role it played in civil rights.

Perhaps a quote adapted from a fireplace mantle in the Frederick Rindge mansion best symbolizes the optimism which exists in West Adams: “California Shall be Ours as Long as the Stars Remain.”

I learned about a fish weir on the Chattahoochee River by reading a historic sign at the Sope Creek parking lot. During the Civil War, a brigade of Federal Forces reportedly crossed the river at a "fish dam". I took a close look at satellite imagery and found a beautiful fish weir in the wide part of Cochran Shoals. The river seems too deep for a fish weir upstream closer to the Sope Creek confluence so I suspect this is the "fish dam" that was crossed.

I can't believe this fish weir escaped my knowledge. I have canoed and rafted over it many many times. I suspect this is an old weir or at least it wasn't maintained in early historic times. I walked its length today and it does not appear to have been dismantled. There is no wooden structure present in the "V", typical for weirs that were used in historic times. Maybe it was impacted by the brigade of soldiers crossing it in 1864. There appears to be a minor "V" towards river right and the main "V" is about mid-channel.

It is the only weir I know of in the Atlanta Metro. There are at least two others on the Chattahoochee River between Roswell and Buford Dam. For more information: mapper.acme.com/?ll=33.90779,-84.44722&z=18&t=S&a...

I was really disapointed when I first arrived at Cochran Mills to photography the waterfall. Low water flow (which I kinda figured, but still) and I just wasn't feeling it. I drove about 30 minutes so what the heck... I broke out the camera and started to compose some shots.

The sun was creating some challenges at first, though most of the water was in shadow, so I decided to break out the ND and stack my polarizer on it. Then, after a test shot I realized an opportunity... The motion of the leaves in the splash pool :-) Oh yeah...

I have about 16 or 17 various shots and comps but this one to me, as I reviewed my shots, seemed the best to show off the swirling I was getting. I thought about breaking out my remote for "bulb" exposures but decided that anything longer than 30 seconds was probably overkill...

This is probably the last photo I got of Leslie. Taken March 2011 right near Barton Springs & Lamar. It's a sad day in Austin, the Statesman said it best, "An Austin icon is dead, and Austin just got a lot less weird."

The article mentions a march down on 6th St tonight at 7pm. I personally feel like a scantily clad memorial bicycle ride is in order.

You'll be missed.

Hudson River Park’s Clinton Cove (West 55th Street & 12th Ave), NYC

by navema
www.navemastudios.com

At the southern entrance to Hudson River Park’s Clinton Cove at West 55th and 12th Avenue sits an incredible work of art by Malcolm Cochran, the first permanent public sculpture commissioned as part of the development of the Hudson River Park. As a child, Malcolm Cochran and his father took a voyage to Europe, sailing from a pier on the Hudson River in New York. As a recipient of a Hudson River Park Trust commission, Cochran created a public art project that provides a clever nod not only to his own experience, but to the glory days of luxury liner cruising that once dominated the travel industry in New York. “My idea evolved from doing a model of an ocean liner to putting that inside a bottle, like a ship in a bottle,” Cochran said. “But when I think about traveling, it’s not so much the exterior, but it’s the cabin that becomes important.”

This distinctive sculpture consists of a 30’ x 8’6” wine bottle resting on its side, within which is a representation and interpretation of the interiors taken from a stateroom of the original ocean liner, RMS Queen Mary (which first sailed in 1936). The exterior of the bottle is fabricated of bronze and zinc with a traditional green patina. The interior of the bottle is fashioned from sheet metal and other materials in a monochromatic scheme evoking the look of a platinum print from a black and white photograph. The interior may be viewed from the portholes along the sides and from the additional windows in the mouth and in the bottom that permit views down the length of the interior. A row of portholes along the top function as skylights during the day. At night, and in overcast weather, the interior is illuminated by electric lights that are part of the cabin’s furnishings.

It was created in partnership with the Percent for Art program, administered through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

1960s poster for Eddie Cochran's last gig at Bristol's Hippodrome.

On Saturday, April 16, 1960, at about 11:50 p.m., while on tour in the United Kingdom, 21-year-old Cochran died in a traffic accident in a taxi (a Ford Consul, not, as widely quoted, a London Hackney carriage) traveling through Chippenham, Wiltshire, on the A4.

The taxi crashed into a lamp post on Rowden Hill, where a plaque now commemorates the event (no other car was involved). Cochran was thrown through the windscreen, suffered severe head injuries, and was taken to St. Martin's Hospital, Bath, but died at 4:10 p.m. the following day.

Songwriter Sharon Sheeley and singer Gene Vincent survived the crash, Vincent sustaining injuries that would shorten his career and affected him for the rest of his life.

The taxi driver, George Martin, was convicted of dangerous driving, fined £50, disqualified from driving for 15 years, and sent to prison for six months.

The car and other items from the crash were impounded at the local police station until a coroners' inquest could be held. At that time, David Harman, better known as Dave Dee of the band Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, was a police cadet at the station.

He taught himself to play guitar on Cochran's impounded Gretsch.

Coincidentally, earlier in the tour, the same guitar had been carried to the car for Cochran by a young fan called Mark Feld, later to become famous as Marc Bolan of T.Rex and who, in a further coincidence, was also killed while a passenger in a single-car automobile accident.

Eddie Cochran is interred in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, California.

A posthumous album, My Way, was released in 1964.

The Philip G. Cochran Methodist Church in Dawson, Pa is a lovely small cathedral built in 1927 by Cochran's wife Sarah, in his memory. It is another of the architectural gems in tiny Dawson, along the banks of the Youghiogheny River where the fortunes of the Victorian Cochrans were made in the coal and coke industries and left a fleeting legacy of buildings in their name.

Listed on the National Register, June of 1984.

So, I'm on my way home from work and I decide that it might be a great time to stop by Cochran Mill Park. The sky was overcast (perfect for my photographic tastes) and being early afternoon I figured that I would probably be by myself (wrong). As I arrived I noticed two young ladies starting down the trail and I gave a friendly hello. Not much of a friendly hello in return - oh well.

After reaching the falls, I decided that I needed to cross the creek and try to get some shots. Well, that was an adventure with my backpack, tripod, slippery rocks and me with the grace of a water buffalo. The crossing did provide some entertainment value to the aforementioned young ladies though!

So, arriving a little wet and somewhat muddy I set up and took a few shots, moved around took a few more shots - I swear, I moved as though I had two left feet…slipping and stumbling, dropping lens caps, It was rough!

After getting some shots and making a fool of myself, I decided to leave the area. I hiked along a short trail that I hadn't been on in a few years - no entertainment value here, pretty uneventful and that’s good, but there was nobody around to appreciate it.

Anyway, after circling around and winding my way to the top of the hill above the waterfall, I decided to just sit down and take it all in (mostly rest and try to remove some of the mud off of my pants). It was at this point that I noticed that the two young ladies down below (I guess they didn't see me) were sharing a "cigarette". Hmmm that was some funny smelling "tobacco"! Their way of enjoying nature I suppose.

After a while as I was making my way down the trail I came up with this "brilliant" idea of extending one of the legs on my tripod and using it like a walking stick. See where I'm going with this? The young ladies smoking the funny smelling “cigarette” in this story are really a diversion and have nothing to do with the rest of the story at all. Don't you just hate that?

Back to the so-called brilliant idea; with the assistance of my tripod walking stick, I crossed back over the creek which again provided quite the show but by this time I had no audience (the young ladies had left) thank goodness. As I was scrambling up the opposite bank I stuck my single extended tripod leg into the ground to brace myself and it just sank into the soft sandy bank all the way up to the first joint. “No worries” I thought as I pulled it straight back out. “Whew dodged a bullet there”, I thought, "I could have snapped the leg right off”! Just then is when I noticed that the bottom cap was missing from the leg and was about 18 inches somewhere down in the ground. Should I try to order another one from Bogen/Manfrotto, could I make my own, should I do without, or should I try to find this one…hmm, I’m cheap. So, I hiked back up to my vehicle put my gear inside and retrieved my handy “US ARMY” shovel – You know, the kind that fold up real small. I went back down to the creek bank and after about 10 minutes of digging a fairly nice foxhole, if I do say so myself, I finally found the little bugger! By this time I’m REALLY thankful nobody is around. I was quite the sight standing there all muddy carrying a little Army shovel and a small black plastic tripod leg cap thingy and wondering to myself if it was really worth the trouble! It was.

So, there it is, not quite a thousand words but I hope you like the photo anyway!

Little, Brown and Company, 1954.

Jacqueline Cochran (1906-1980) was a pioneer American aviator, considered to be one of the most gifted racing pilots of her generation. She was an important contributor to the formation of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during the Second World War.

She was also the first woman to break the sound barrier, the first woman to land and take off from an aircraft carrier, the first woman to reach Mach 2, the first woman to pilot a bomber across the North Atlantic (in 1941), the first woman enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio, the first pilot to make a blind (instrument) landing, the only woman to ever be President of the Federation Aeronautique International (1958-1961), the first woman to fly a fixed-wing, jet aircraft across the Atlantic, the first pilot to fly above 20,000 feet with an oxygen mask and the first woman to enter the Bendix Trans-continental Race.

Jacqueline Cochran still holds more distance and speed records than any pilot living or dead, male or female.

Photograph taken of Eddie Cochran and his girlfriend singer-songwriter Sharon Sheely two weeks before Cochran's final concert at the Bristol Hippodrome the following day the car taking Sheeley, Cochran, and co-star Gene Vincent to London Airport hit a lamp-post at Chippenham Wiltshire after a tyre burst - Cochran died in St Martin's Hospital, Bath, and Sharon had back & leg injuries - she was visited in hospital by the Everly Brothers - Gene Vincent was unhurt.

The injured passengers were rushed to St. Martin’s Hospital in Bath where they were treated by emergency staff. Cochran did not regain consciousness and died of severe brain lacerations at 4 PM Easter Sunday, sixteen hours after the crash. Although his death made headlines in Britain, the news received only minor coverage in the USA. On Wednesday, April 20th after less than three days in the hospital, Vincent discharged himself with the apparent intention of flying back to Los Angeles with Cochran’s body.

He immediately rang his mother in Norfolk, Virginia. Gene said “Eddie and I started together and we’re coming home together”. Eddie Cochran was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Cypress, California on Monday April 25, 1960.

Pleasant Cochran Pond, right at the beginning of our trek. If you view large, you can see those dilapidated stone or concrete structures on the other shore. I was really curious what they were, but there was no path over to that side.

This building was a water tower that served a mansion on the neighboring hillside near Dawson, Pa. That mansion was Linden Hall built for Sarah Cochran, widow of coal and coke magnate, Philip Cochran, at a cost of two million dollars. This was 1913, so that was a lot of money. The Tudor style house had 35 rooms, Tiffany windows, an indoor bowling alley and a pipe organ. For a while after her death, the place was used as a monastery and then transitioned to St James Country Club with a golf course. The tapering stone foundation was, in itself, a work of art. Linden Hall was purchased and restored in 1976 as a playground for the United Steel Workers of America. I have never seen any pictures or reference to the water tower, also known as Dawson Tower. If anyone has any information or pictures let me know. I have always mourned the passing of this and all other relics that make the landscape a magical place. I was eleven when this was taken.

Cochran tower was constructed in 1912 to supply water for the estate of Sarah. B. Cochran, widow of coal and coke magnate, Philip Cochran. At that time the mansion cost two million dollars and had a large Tiffany window, so it was not a shabby place! When I was a kid we used to go out here and climb up in the long abandoned tower. I took these pictures in 1961 when I was 11. So, I guess you can figure out I am really old!
