London /ˈlʌndən/ is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom, and the largest urban zone in the European Union by most measures. Located on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium.London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its square-mile mediaeval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, the name London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms the London region and the Greater London administrative area,[ governed by the elected Mayor of London and the London Assembly.

hand made fantasy map. I 'design' complete fantasy cities, no new one, but places that are grown over centuries. This city, Wepelte, is situated at beginning/end of a fjord, where two rivers end in sea. Completely drawns with pencils, so notice the colour difference between north and south... I ran out of pencils :( The name has been derived from a street name in Annen, The Netherlands.

Valencia (Spanish: [baˈlenθja]) or València (Valencian: [vaˈlensia]) is the third largest city in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona, and the capital of the autonomous community of Valencia, with a population of 809,267[1] within its administrative limits on a land area of 134.6 km2 (52 sq mi). It is the 15th most populous municipality in the European Union. The urban area of Valencia extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of between 1,175,000[2] and 1,564,145.[3] Between 1,705,742[4][5][6] and 2,300,000[7] people live in the Valencia metropolitan area.

The climate for business improved markedly in Valencia during the recent period of rapid economic growth in Spain with concurrent development and expansion of telecommunications and transport. Valencia is the 29th fastest improving European city[8] and its influences in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the gamma world's centers.[9] Port of Valencia is the 5th busiest container port in Europe and largest on the Mediterranean Sea, with a trade volume of 4.21 million TEU's.[10]

Valencia was founded as a Roman colony in 138 BC. The city is situated on the banks of the Turia, on the east coast of the Iberian peninsula, fronting the Gulf of Valencia of Mediterranean Sea. Its historic center is one of the largest in Spain, with approximately 169 acres;[11] this heritage of ancient monuments, diverse scenic sites and cultural attractions makes Valencia one of the country's most popular tourist destinations for Spaniards and world travelers alike.

Among its most representative monuments are Valencia Cathedral, Torres de Serranos, Torres de Cuart and Llotja de la Seda (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996), and the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (City of Arts and Sciences), an entertainment-based cultural and architectural complex designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela.[12] The Museu de Belles Arts de València houses a large collection of paintings from the 14th-18th centuries, including works by Velázquez, El Greco, and Goya, also an important series of engravings by Piranesi.[13] The Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (Valencian Institute of Modern Art) offers both permanent collections and temporary exhibitions of contemporary art and photography.[14]

Valencia is integrated into an industrial area on the Costa del Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast). Its main festival, the Falles, is known worldwide, while the traditional Spanish dish, paella, originated here.

The City of Arts and Sciences (Valencian: Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Spanish: Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias) is an entertainment-based cultural and architectural complex in the city of Valencia, Spain. It is the most important modern tourist destination in the city of Valencia.

The City of Arts and Sciences is situated at the end of the former riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957. The old riverbed was turned into a picturesque sunken park.

Designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, the project underwent the first stages of construction in July 1996 and the finished "city" was inaugurated April 16, 1998 with the opening of L'Hemisfèric. The last great component of the City of Arts and Sciences, El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, was presented on October 9, 2005, Valencian Community Day.

Tags: city   town   map   handmade   norderney   fantasy   cartography   veere   terp   wierde   formerum   warft
Hand drawn fantasy city. I design towns and cities that have grown over centuries - they aren't complete new-built places, but 'ever existed places now being drawn'.

This particular city is actually more than one:
-the island's capital Veere (town; west). Originally it was a village but the spa (Kurhaus), sanatorium, beach resort and casino made Formerum grow.
-a real city Veere (east). The city never expanded as its neighbour has been important since the 18th century.
-a radial village on a manmade hill called a wierde or terp, which is very typical for Northern Netherlands and Germany, as the sea submerges the surrounding land at spring-tides (southeast of Veere, near the ferry dock)
-a normal village on the peninsula, seperated by mud-lands.

The town network has been built on the western edge of a Waddeneiland (special type of island in mud-lands in Holland, Germany and Denmark). An shallow inlet, only at high tide filled, separates the northern dunes and the southern polders.

The map has been inspired on(?) the Wadden Islands, in particular the German isles of Norderney, Borkum and Sylt.

In past I made up the names by myself, but I ran out of names, so I borrowed Veere's and Formerum's name.

Denver is called “The Mile High City” because its altitude (from the steps of the Colorado State Capitol) is exactly 5,280 feet (or one mile) above sea level. What’s not immediately obvious until one visits Denver is that the city itself is incredibly flat. Denver was essentially built where the American plains encounter the Rocky Mountains. It is from the Rockies that one can see how level the city is. From its geographic location, many opine that Denver is gigantic city located in the middle of. . .well. . .nowhere.

In spite of its location, Denver is by no means an insignificant city. Denver is the 26th largest city in the USA, and one of the three headquarters of the U.S. MInt. The Denver branch of the Mint is the single largest producer of coins in the world. The city also has a home team for every major sport in the nation (Football: Denver Broncos; Baseball: Colorado Rockies; Basketball; Denver Nuggets; and Hockey: Colorado Avalanche). Denver also has the largest city park system in the nation with 205 parks within city limits and 20,000 acres of parks in Rocky Mountains. Also, a very unknown fact about Denver is that it has 300+ days of sunshine a year, exceeding both San Diego and Miami. (In terms of weather alone, it is the opposite of my current residence of Seattle)!

I lived and worked in Denver for three years while attending graduate school at the University of Denver, located a few miles south of downtown. Alas, Denver is another American city that was home during a period of my life. TiA International Photography is obliged to portray the city proudly!

Have a great weekend, friends.

Hand drawn city map of Raalte (called after some Dutch town). The city is situated on two rivers, on of them being an affluent, ending in the other. It's drawn as a city as it could have grown in multiple centuries: city center, former bastions, station close to the river side, apparment buildings from the 70s and newer neighbourhoods surrounding the city. In a word: a very European city.

Why it is called Raalte? Well, I just like place names ending on -e and after having made up twenty of them, I started to run out of own names, so started using real place names.

City of Art and Industrial Reflections in London

Docklands is the semi-official name for an area in the east of London, England, comprising parts of several boroughs (Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Greenwich) in Greater London. The docks were formerly part of the Port of London, at one time the world's largest port. They have now been redeveloped principally for commercial and residential use. The name London Docklands was used for the first time in a government report on redevelopment plans in 1971 but has since become virtually universally adopted. It created conflict between the new and old communities of the London Docklands.
Over the past 20 years, the population of the Docklands has more than doubled and the area has become both a major business centre and an increasingly acceptable area to live. Transport links have improved significantly, with the Isle of Dogs gaining a tube connection via the Jubilee Line Extension (opened 1999) and the DLR being extended to Beckton, Lewisham, London City Airport, North Woolwich and Stratford. Canary Wharf has become one of Europe's biggest clusters of skyscrapers and a direct challenge to the financial dominance of the City.

Although most of the old Dockland wharves and warehouses have been demolished, some have been restored and converted into flats. Most of the docks themselves have survived and are now used as marinas or watersports centres (the major exception being the Surrey Commercial Docks, now largely filled in). Although large ships can - and occasionally still do - visit the old docks, all of the commercial traffic has moved down-river.

Construction on this $11 billion project, the largest privately financed development in the United States, began in June of 2006 (at the same time New Orleans was trying simply to rebuild following Hurricane Katrina....) In spite of safety and construction troubles, labor issues, financial woes and more, much of the project opened in 2009, with several of the buildings achieving LEED certified status. However, the Harmon Hotel may be imploded due to faulty construction.

Macho City - "Steve Miller" - Play this track here.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here

The Steve Miller Band is a US rock band formed in 1967 in San Francisco. Familiar tracks include 'The Joker', 'Jet Airliner' and the 1982 hit 'Abracadabra'. This is one of my favourite tracks however, very clever lyrics. El Salvador & Afghanistan ('ask those people about the macho plan...') are name checked in the song reflecting some cynicism of US foreign policy at the time, early 1980's.

The album 'Circle of love' contains a 16 minutes version of this track (taking up the whole of a side of vinyl. Hear it here.

------------------------

The Beetham Tower, completed 2007 is a landmark 47-storey residential skyscraper in Manchester city centre, England. Certain a macho statement for the city and at 168 metres is the highest outside of London.

It consists of a (four star) Hilton Hotel up to level 23 and apartments from level 25 up to the triplex penthouse on level 47. The tower lies on Deansgate and has two postal addresses, with the apartments falling under 301 Deansgate and the hotel under 303 Deansgate.

The architect, Ian Simpson, bought and resides in the top floor penthouse, which is the highest living space in Britain. It cost him £3 million. The residence occupies the top two storeys of the building and apparently features a semi-indoors garden containing 21 four-metre high olive, lemon and oak trees, shipped from Italy, and placed before the roof was built.

During the installation of the glass and steel 'blade' architectural feature on the roof, a strange noise problem emerged. People reported that the building "whistles" (more like an intermittent hum) in windy weather. The sound is close to standard musical C (approximately 262 Hertz); some say it is like a "UFO landing" in sci-fi films. The noise also affected the production of local soap opera, Coronation Street with producers having to create extra background noise as the tower is close to the show's set.

A evacuation occurred in September 2007 when a fire was suspected. BBC Report here. Fortunately it did not become a real life towering inferno.

========================================================================

Within London, both the City of London and the City of Westminster have city status and both the City of London and the remainder of Greater London are the ceremonial counties. The current area of Greater London has incorporated areas that were once part of the counties of Middlesex, Kent, Surrey, Essex and Hertfordshire. London's status as the capital of England, and later the United Kingdom, has never been granted or confirmed officially—by statute or in written form.

Its position was formed through constitutional convention, making its status as de facto capital a part of the UK's unwritten constitution. The capital of England was moved to London from Winchester as the Palace of Westminster developed in the 12th and 13th centuries to become the permanent location of the royal court, and thus the political capital of the nation.More recently, Greater London has been defined as a region of England and in this context known as London

Greater London covers an area of 1,579 square kilometres (610 sq mi), an area which had a population of 7,172,036 in 2001 and a population density of 4,542 people per square kilometre. A larger area, referred to as the London Metropolitan Region or the London Metropolitan Agglomeration covers an area of 8,382 square kilometres (3,236 sq mi) has a population of 12,653,500 and a population density of 1,510 people per square kilometre.[87] Modern London stands athwart the Thames, its primary geographical feature, a navigable river which crosses the city from the south-west to the east. The Thames Valley is a floodplain surrounded by gently rolling hills including Parliament Hill, Addington Hills, and Primrose Hill. The Thames was once a much broader, shallower river with extensive marshlands; at high tide, its shores reached five times their present width.

Since the Victorian era the Thames has been extensively embanked, and many of its London tributaries now flow underground. The Thames is a tidal river, and London is vulnerable to flooding. The threat has increased over time due to a slow but continuous rise in high water level by the slow 'tilting' of Britain (up in the north and down in the south) caused by post-glacial rebound.

In 1974, a decade of work began on the construction of the Thames Barrier across the Thames at Woolwich to deal with this threat. While the barrier is expected to function as designed until roughly 2070, concepts for its future enlargement or redesign are already being discussed

=========================================================================

City Hall is the headquarters of the Greater London Authority (GLA) which comprises the Mayor of London and London Assembly. It is located in Southwark, stands on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. Designed by Norman Foster, it opened in July 2002.

The building has an unusual bulbous shape, intended to reduce its surface area and thus improve energy efficiency. It has been compared variously to Darth Vader's helmet,[citation needed] a misshapen egg, a woodlouse[citation needed] and a motorcycle helmet.[citation needed] Former mayor Ken Livingstone referred to it as a "glass testicle",[1][2] while the present mayor, Boris Johnson, has referred to it as "The Glass Gonad"[3] and more politely as "The Onion".[citation needed] Its designers reportedly saw the building as a giant sphere hanging over the Thames, but opted for a more conventionally rooted building instead. It has no front or back in conventional terms but derives its shape from a modified sphere.

City Hall was constructed on a site formerly occupied by wharves serving the Pool of London . The building does not belong to the GLA but is leased under a 25-year rent. It forms part of a larger development called More London, including offices and shops. Next to City Hall is a sunken amphitheatre called The Scoop, which is used in the summer months for open-air performances; it is not, however, part of the GLA's jurisdiction. The Scoop and surrounding landscape were designed by Townshend Landscape Architects.

On the top floor is a viewing platform that almost completely surrounds the building, and is open to the public on particular open house days.A 500-metre (1,640 ft) helical walkway, reminiscent of that in New York's Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, ascends the full height of the building. At the top of the ten-story building is an exhibition and meeting space called "London's Living Room", with an open viewing deck which is occasionally open to the public. The walkway provides views of the interior of the building, and is intended to symbolise transparency; a similar device was used by Foster in his design for the rebuilt Reichstag (parliament) in Germany. In 2006 it was announced that solar photovoltaic cells would be fitted to the building by the London Climate Change Agency.[4]

Despite the name, City Hall is neither located in nor does it serve a city (as recognised by English constitutional law), often adding to the confusion of Greater London with the City of London, whose headquarters is in the Guildhall, north of the Thames. The predecessors of the Greater London Authority, namely the Greater London Council and the London County Council, had their headquarters at County Hall, upstream on the South Bank. Although County Hall's old council chamber is still intact, the building is unavailable for use by the GLA due to the building's conversion into, among other things, a luxury hotel, amusement arcade and aquarium.

Two good reasons for closing the station
Submitted by Max on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 9:57pm.
Conventional rail car axles have no differential gearing to accommodate the longer distance the wheels on the outside of a curve have to travel compared to the shorter distance on the inside of the curve. Consequently travel on any curve involves a deal of skidding and steel-on-steel screeching. With brakes applied as the train came to a stop in the enclosed station, the effect must have made quite an impression.

There would have been wider gaps for passengers to mind as they crossed from the curved platform onto the floor of a straight car.

This is only my speculation on a couple of considerations that may have led the IRT to close the station. Their reasons may have differed altogether.

It is a beautiful daylight station.

The view of the City of London from the top of the Monument...

=======================================================================

The City of London is a small area within Greater London, England. It is the historic core of London around which the modern conurbation grew and has held city status since time immemorial. The City’s boundaries have remained almost unchanged since the Middle Ages, and it is now only a tiny part of the metropolis of London. It is often referred to as the City or the Square Mile, as it is just over one square mile (1.12 mile² / 2.90 km²)[1] in area. These terms are also often used as metonymies for the United Kingdom's financial services industry, which has historically been based here.

In the medieval period, the City was the full extent of London. The term London now refers to a much larger conurbation roughly corresponding to Greater London, a local government area which includes 32 London boroughs as well as the City of London, which is not one of the 32 London boroughs. The local authority for the City, the City of London Corporation, is unique in the United Kingdom, and has some unusual responsibilities for a local authority in Britain, such as being the police authority for the City. It also has responsibilities and ownerships beyond the City's boundaries. The Corporation is headed by the Lord Mayor of the City of London, a separate (and much older) office to the Mayor of London.
The City is today a major business and financial centre, ranking on a par with New York City as the leading centre of global finance;[2] in the 19th century, the City served as the world's primary business centre.[3] The City has a resident population of approximately 8,000, but around 340,000 people work there, mainly in the financial services sector. The legal profession form a major component of the western side of the City, in and around the Inns of Court, of which two - the Inner and Middle Temples - fall within the City of London boundary.

=======================================================================

The Monument stands at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill in the City of London. It was built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London and to celebrate the rebuilding of the City.
The fire began in a baker's house in Pudding Lane on Sunday 2nd September 1666 and finally extinguished on Wednesday 5th September, after destroying the greater part of the City. Although there was little loss of life, the fire brought all activity to a halt, having consumed or severely damaged thousands of houses, hundreds of streets, the City's gates, public buildings, churches and St. Paul's Cathedral. The only buildings to survive in part were those built of stone, like St. Paul's and the Guildhall.

As part of the rebuilding, it was decided to erect a permanent memorial of the Great Fire near the place where it began. Sir Christopher Wren, Surveyor General to King Charles II and the architect of St. Paul's Cathedral, and hisfriend and colleague, Dr Robert Hooke, provided a design for a colossal Doric column in the antique tradition. They drew up plans for a column containing a cantilevered stone staircase of 311 steps leading to a viewing platform. This was surmounted by a drum and a copper urn from which flames emerged, symbolising the Great Fire. The Monument, as it came to be called, is 61 metres high (202 feet) - the exact distance between it and the site in Pudding Lane where the fire began.

My favourite hour in London and my favourite building, the Lloyds...

=======================================================================

The blue hour comes from a French expression (l'heure bleue), which refers to twilight, the period each morning and evening where there is neither full daylight nor complete darkness. The time is considered special because of the quality of the light at this time of day.

The Lloyd's Building (also sometimes known as The Inside-Out Building) is the home of the insurance institution Lloyd's of London, and is located at One Lime Street, in the City of London, England.
It was designed by architect Richard Rogers and built between 1978 and 1986. Bovis was the management contractor for the scheme.[1] Like the Pompidou Centre (designed by Renzo Piano and Rogers), the building was innovative in having its services such as staircases, lifts, electrical power conduits and water pipes on the outside, leaving an uncluttered space inside. The twelve glass lifts were the first of their kind in the UK.

The building consists of three main towers and three service towers around a central, rectangular space. Its focal point is the large Underwriting Room on the ground floor, which houses the famous Lutine Bell. The Underwriting Room (often simply known as 'the Room') is overlooked by galleries, forming a 60 metres (197 ft) high atrium lit naturally through a huge barrel-vaulted glass roof. The first four galleries open onto the atrium space, and are connected by escalators through the middle of the structure. The higher floors are glassed-in, and can only be reached via the outside lifts.

The official name of the city is Bilbao, as known in most languages of the world. Euskaltzaindia, the official regulatory institution of the Basque language, agreed that between the two possible names existing in Basque, Bilbao and Bilbo, that the historical name in Basque is Bilbo, while keeping the officialty of the first one. Although the term Bilbo does not appear on old documents, in the play The Merry Wives of Windsor by William Shakespeare, there is a reference of swords presumably made of Biscayan iron to which he calls "bilboes", which might suggest that it is a word used since at least the sixteenth century.

Since the deindustrialization process started in the 1990s, many of the former industrial areas are being transformed into modern public and private spaces designed by several of the world's most renowed architects and artists. The main example is the Guggenheim Museum, located in what was an old dock and wood warehouse. The building, designed by Frank Gehry and inaugurated in October 1997, is considered among architecture experts as one of the most important structures of the last 30 years, and a masterpiece by itself. The museum houses part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation modern art collection. Another example is the Alhóndiga, a wine warehouse built in 1909 and completely redesigned in 2010 by French designer Philippe Starck into a multi-purpose venue that consist of a cinema multiplex, a fitness centre, a library, and a restaurant, among other spaces. The Abandoibarra area is also being renovated, and it features not only the Guggenheim Museum, but also Arata Isozaki's tower complex, the Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall and the Iberdrola Tower, designed by Argentine architect César Pelli and that will be, upon completion in 2011, the Basque Country's tallest skyscraper with 165 metres (541 ft) high. Zorrozaurre is the next area to be redeveloped, following a 2007 master plan designed by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. This current peninsula will be transformed into an 500,000 m2 (5,400,000 sq ft) island and will feature residential and commercial buildings, as well as the new BBK seat.

These were the first post-war high-rise buildings to be built in Hamburg. Initially they were covered with white LECA-tiles, which was much more appropriate than the current facade.

=======================================================================

London (pronunciation (help·info); IPA: /ˈlʌndən/) is the capital and largest urban area of both England and the United Kingdom. An important settlement for two millennia, London's history goes back to its founding by the Romans. Since its foundation, London has been part of many movements and phenomena throughout history, including the English Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and the Gothic Revival. The city's core, the ancient City of London, still retains its limited medieval boundaries; but since at least the 19th century, the name "London" has also referred to the whole metropolis that has developed around it. Today the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region of England and the Greater London administrative area, with its own elected mayor and assembly.

London is one of the world's leading business, financial and cultural centres and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion and the arts contribute to its status as a major global city.Central London is the headquarters of more than half of the UK's top 100 listed companies (the FTSE 100) and over 100 of Europe's 500 largest companies. The city is a major tourist destination both for domestic and overseas visitors, with annual expenditure by tourists of around £15 billion.

Greater London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; the historic settlement of Greenwich; the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; and the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church.

London's population draws from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, and over 300 languages are spoken within the city.As of 2006, it had an official population of 7,512,400 within the boundaries of Greater London and is the most populous municipality in the European Union. As of 2001, the Greater London Urban Area had a population of 8,278,251 and the metropolitan area is estimated to have a total population of between 12 and 14 million. The public transport network, administered by Transport for London, is one of the most extensive in the world, and Heathrow Airport is the busiest airport in the world for international traffic.

The surrounding East London area saw much of London's early industrial development; now, brownfield sites throughout the area are being redeveloped as part of the Thames Gateway including the London Riverside and Lower Lea Valley, which is being developed into the Olympic Park for the 2012 Olympics.

London has hosted the Summer Olympics twice, in 1908 and 1948. In July 2005 London was chosen to host the Games in 2012, which will make it the first city in the world to host the Summer Olympics three times.

Turn off the lights

I simply processed this using a LightRoom 2.x preset called "B&W Low Contrast. "

Lyrics for this song: Kaskade - Empty Streets (HD MUSICVIDEO)

the city feels clean this time of night just empty streets
and me walking home to clear my head

i know it came as no surprise

i'm affected more than i had guessed on what was said

if the smile's not meant to be, if the heart's not ready to open

if we make it i won't see it's broken

if the smile's not meant to be, if the heart's not ready to open

if we make it i won't see how it's broken

it's the quiet time before the dawn and i'm half past making sense of it, was i wrong?

should i claim to give it all ** in a world where not much ever seems to last long

if the smile's not meant to be, if the heart's not ready to open

if we make it i won't see it's broken if the smile's not meant to be,

if the heart's not ready to open if we make it i won't

see how it's broken
how it's broken (3x) (repeats)
(repeats) if the smile's not meant to be, if the heart's not ready to open

if we make it i won't see it's broken

Docklands is the semi-official name for an area in northeast and southeast London, England. It forms part of the boroughs of Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Greenwich. The docks were formerly part of the Port of London, at one time the world's largest port. They have now been redeveloped principally for commercial and residential use. The name London Docklands was used for the first time in a government report on redevelopment plans in 1971 but has since become virtually universally adopted. It also created conflict between the new and old communities of the London Docklands.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Docklands

The Ontario Tower is a luxury high-rise residential development in London's Docklands. It was built by the Ballymore construction company, as part of a wider scheme in New Providence Wharf to provide new executive housing to meet changing demand in the Docklands area. 'Ontario' was designed by the architects who created landmarks such as Chicago's Willis Tower. The Ontario Tower is a distinct landmark of the London Skyline with its blue LED rimmed elliptical top. The 29-storey project was completed in the Autumn of 2007, and is the tallest building in London solely designed for executive residential use, at 104 metres tall.

It is expected to be joined by a much taller neighbour (Quebec Tower) directly next to it.

Carrara Marble was used in the majority of apartment bathrooms throughout the development; The Natural Stone Depot Ltd, of London, were contracted to carry out this work.

Ontrario Tower is a neighbour of the Radisson Edwardian Hotel. Hence, the residents of the tower can enjoy some of the hotel's facilities such as room service, business centre and spa. The hotel's gym and spa is located in the first floor of Ontario Tower.

London is a leading global city, with its strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence. It is the world's largest financial centre alongside New York,[11][12][13] has the largest city GDP in Europe[14] and is home to the headquarters of more than 100 of Europe's 500 largest companies.[15] It is the most visited city in the world.[16] London's five international airports make its airspace the busiest of any urban centre worldwide[17] and London Heathrow is the world's busiest airport by number of international passengers.[18] London's 43 universities form the largest concentration of higher education in Europe.[19] In 2012 London will become the first city to host the Summer Olympics three times

It was a nice summer day in the City, so everyone was happy to leave work...;-}

=======================================================================

The City of London is a geographically small city within Greater London in England. It is the historic core of London around which, along with Southwark and then Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City’s boundaries have remained almost constant since the Middle Ages, and hence it is now only a tiny part of the much larger London metropolis. It is often referred to as the City or the Square Mile, as it is just over one square mile (1.12 mile² / 2.90 km²)[1] in area. These terms are also often used as metonyms for the United Kingdom's financial services industry, which is based here.

In the medieval period, the City was the full extent of London. The term London now refers to a much larger conurbation containing both the City of London itself, as well as the 32 'London boroughs', constituting Greater London. The City is today a major business and financial centre, ranking on a par with New York City as the leading centre of global finance;[2] in the 19th Century, the City served as the world's primary business centre.[3] The City has a resident population of under 10,000, whilst it employs 340,000 professional workers, mainly in the financial sector, making the area's transport system extremely busy during peak times.

The City is not one of the 32 London boroughs. It is governed by the City of London Corporation, which has some unusual responsibilities for a local authority, such as being the police authority for the City. It also has responsibilities and ownerships beyond the City's boundaries.

Some moody clouds over the London Westminster Bridge, just before a rain fall...

=======================================================================

Westminster Bridge is a road and foot traffic bridge over the River Thames between Westminster, Middlesex bank, and Lambeth, Surrey bank in what is now Greater London, England.
For over 600 years, the nearest bridge to London Bridge was at Kingston. Proposals for a bridge at Westminster had been made as early as 1664. These were opposed by the Corporation of London and the watermen. Despite further opposition in 1722 and after a new timber bridge was built at Putney in 1729, the scheme received parliamentary approval in 1736. Financed by private capital, lotteries and grants, Westminster Bridge, designed by the Swiss architect Charles Labelye, was built between 1739-1750.

The City of London responded to Westminster Bridge by removing the buildings on London Bridge and widening it in 1760-63. The City also commenced work on the Blackfriars Bridge, which opened in 1769. Other bridges from that time include Kew Bridge (1759), Battersea Bridge (1773), and Richmond Bridge (1777).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westminster_Bridge

A city is a relatively large and permanent settlement.[1][2] Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law.

For example, an article of incorporation approved by the local state legislature distinguishes a city government from a town in Massachusetts. In the United Kingdom and parts of the Commonwealth of Nations, a city is traditionally a settlement with a royal charter.[1] Historically, in Europe, a city was understood to be an urban settlement with a cathedral.

Cities generally have advanced systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process. A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban areas, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers of employment. Once a city expands far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis.

In popular culture

In the 2002 science fiction film 28 Days Later, the protagonist awakes from a coma to find London deserted, and walks over the Westminster Bridge whilst looking for people.

Westminster Bridge is the start and finish point for the Bridges Handicap Race, a traditional London running race.

William Wordsworth wrote the sonnet Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802.

In the British Science Fiction series Doctor Who, Westminster Bridge has been used for various location shots. It was used originally in 1964 in the serial The Dalek Invasion of Earth which depicts the structure as desolate and deserted. Several Daleks are seen gliding over the bridge and the adjoining Albert Embankment. The location was then re-used by the production team when the series was revived in 2005 where the ninth doctor and Rose Tyler run across the bridge in the episode Rose. It is also the name of a track in the Doctor Who Soundtrack album.

English:

The Milwaukee City Hall was finished in 1895, at which time its bell tower, at 353 feet (108 m), was the third tallest structure in the nation, behind the Washington Monument and the then-incomplete Philadelphia City Hall.

Milwaukee City Hall was designed by architect Henry Koch in the German Renaissance Revival style, due to Milwaukee's historic German immigrant population; many of the surrounding buildings mirror this design.

City Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and declared a National Historic Landmark in 2005.

City Hall is notable as the scene of the largest Socialist victory ever registered in an American city, when in 1910 Emil Seidel and a majority Socialist Common Council swept into office. Although the Socialist majority on the Common Council was short-lived, the city was led by Socialist mayors from 1916 to 1960.

This warmly illuminated picture of city streets at night was photographed in the tropical town center of Puerto Cruz de Tenerife. The glow of lights was created with a technique known as the long exposure photograhy.

This picture was created for my decorative friend epSos.de and can be used for free, if you link epSos.de as the original author of the image.

The wet mosaic of the street was wet from rain so that the reflections of LED light bulbs from cheap hotels were glowing even more at night than usual lighting technology.

The tropical palms decorate the streets of Puerto Cruz de Tenerife in addition to the warm outdoor lighting that is used to create a romantic atmosphere in the center of the city at night.

Thank you for sharing this picture with your friends !

This picture with the glowing lights of the bar street lamps were photographed in the city at night in Puerto Cruz de Tenerife. This picture was created for my understanding friend epSos.de and can be used for free, if you link epSos.de as the original author of the image.

Small LED town lighting created a perfect atmosphere to go out and photograph that evening street lights. The warm glow of the city night lights welcomed the soul to rest for a while, so that it was possible to create this long exposure photo.

The charming, romantic and warm colors of this urban scene is one perfect example of how the artificial town lighting changes the natural night light in the city.

Thank you for sharing this picture with your friends !

City Hall is the headquarters of the Greater London Authority which comprises the Mayor of London and London Assembly. It is located in Southwark, stands on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. Designed by Norman Foster, it opened in July 2002.

The building has an unusual bulbous shape, intended to reduce its surface area and thus improve energy efficiency. It has been compared variously to Darth Vader's helmet, a misshapen egg, a human scrotum, a woodlouse or a motorcycle helmet. Former mayor Ken Livingstone referred to it as a "glass testicle". The new mayor, Boris Johnson, has referred to it more politely as 'The Onion'. Its designers reportedly saw the building as a giant sphere hanging over the Thames, but opted for a more conventionally rooted building instead. It has no front or back on conventional terms but derives its shape from a modified sphere.

City Hall was constructed on a site formerly occupied by wharves serving the Pool of London.

A 500-metre (1,640 ft) helical walkway, reminiscent of that in New York's Solomon R. In 2006 it was announced that solar photovoltaic cells would be fitted to the building by the London Climate Change Agency.

The nearest London Underground station is London Bridge.

What is a person suppose to do when a blizzard is raging outside? Bake cookies! City is inspecting the Mexican tea cakes before they are slightly flatten and placed in the oven. This day he said he pass up the lick taste just for our daughter. Suzie and I both had stomach aches yesterday from the large number of cookies we consumed right out of the oven. I solved the problem by putting all the fresh baked pecan sandies, Mexican tea cakes, and peanut butter blossoms into holiday canasters and placing them on the front porch. They are less tempting if they are frozen solid.

EXPLORE # 198

High school seemed like such a blur,
I didn't have much interest in sports or school elections.
And in class I dreamed all day,
Of a rock 'n' roll weekend

And the girl in the front of the room,
So close yet so far y'know she never seemed to notice
That this silly schoolboy crush
Wasn't just pretend.

Life goes by so fast
You only want to do what you think is right.
Close your eyes and then it's past;
Story of my life

I went downtown to look for a job
I had no training, no experience to speak of.
I looked at the holes in my jeans
And turned and headed back.

Good times come and good times go,
I only wish the good times would last a little longer.
I think about the good times we had
And why they had to end.

So I sit at the edge of my bed
I strum my guitar and I sing an outlaw love song.
Thinkin' 'bout what you're doin' now
And when you're comin' back.

Life goes by so fast
You only want to do what you think is right.
Close your eyes and then it's past;
Story of my life

Taken near the El Ángel de la Independencia monument in Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico City

Please View Larger On Black

The Diana fountain roundabout is situation near the world famous El Angel structure, aka The Angel of Independence, Its a structure featuring the Roman goddess Diana, who is considered as the goddess of 'hunt', hence the arrows. In fact, it was originally named 'The Arrow Thrower of the North Star'. Not to be confused with Cupid (due to the arrows)

What I really like about the photo is that the top rays of light seem to go behind the structure. Can't be done much justice without seeing in bigger size.

p.s. I had to wait for any buses to pass by (to cover the top rays), so sorry to folks who I kept waiting.

My first try at a multiple-photo stitch.
This is an ~90º view of Northeast (left) to Southeast (right).

Mexico City was extremely unpolluted and clear on November 4th, 2007.

I went to the top of the Chapultepec Mount (Cerro de Chapultepec), where the Chapultepec Castle is located. There I took several photographs of the city.

There will be some future photographs showing the rest of the city.

Nice is a city in southern France located on the Mediterranean coast, between Marseille and Genoa, with 986,903 inhabitants in the metropolitan. The city is a major tourist centre and a leading resort on the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur). It is the historical capital city of the County of Nice. There were settlements in the Nice area approximately 2,000 years ago: the site of Terra Amata shows one of the earliest uses of fire and construction of houses. Nice was founded probably around 350 BC by the Greeks of Massilia (Marseille) and received the name of "Nikaia" in honour of a victory over the neighbouring Ligurians (Nike being the Greek goddess of victory). It soon became one of the busiest trading ports on the Ligurian coast

My city, the city of Lisbon. This has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. You have to visit it, to know what i am talking about. The shot was taken at the highest viewpoint aka N. Sra do Monte, one of the seven hills the city has. It's not a perfect shot. I had to compose a single one from two different shots and, as you might imagine, photomerging is not an easy task to do. It's ok. I have been in the mood for night shots but this will be my last one, at least for a while. Enjoy :)

It's worth viewing the biggest size, i tell you.

One city I just love, great people, great times.

The hall shown here when taken as a night shot in all its glory.

After Belfast was awarded city status by Queen Victoria in 1888 this magnificent building was first planned. . There was much rapid expansion and thriving linen, rope-making, shipbuilding and engineering industries at the time.

Architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas supervised the start of construction in 1898 with completion in 1906 at a cost of approx £369,000.

Apparently Durban city hall in South Africa is a close replica of Belfast's City Hall

Later in the year when this originally taken (2004) just across from here in Donegal square, the Northern Bank Robbery took place 20th December.
