Flickr Corfe Castle, Dorset, England (Explored 18-11-15)
Tags: castle   corfe
On checking the weather it seemed it might be possible to get a sunrise over the castle, so up before 7:00am in time to reach my selected viewpoint. A hurried climb up the slippery chalk steps followed by disappointment. The clouds had increased in volume and obscured what little of the sun there had been, still I'm fairly pleased with this. C'est la vie!

Corfe Castle is a fortification standing above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck in the English county of Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates back to the 11th century and commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage. The first phase was one of the earliest castles in England to be built using stone when the majority were built with earth and timber. Corfe Castle underwent major structural changes in the 12th and 13th centuries.

In 1572, Corfe Castle left the Crown's control when Elizabeth I sold it to Sir Christopher Hatton. Sir John Bankes bought the castle in 1635, and was the owner during the English Civil War. His wife, Lady Mary Bankes, led the defence of the castle when it was twice besieged by Parliamentarian forces. The first siege, in 1643, was unsuccessful, but by 1645 Corfe was one of the last remaining royalist strongholds in southern England and fell to a siege ending in an assault. In March that year Corfe Castle was demolished on Parliament's orders.

This 19th century castle was home to a mad king that some debate, part of the third reich's plan to steal antiquities which most deplore, but clearly is one of the most beautiful in Germany. The day we were there was hot and hazy. I used Lightroom's HDR merge and dehaze tool to get it looking somewhat better.

SeaChant Castle, perched on a rocky cliff along Lenfald’s southeastern coast, is one of the smaller castles in the area. Lenfel sailors enjoy stopping here during their travels up and down the coast. It is said that if one listens closely, the sparkling waves create music as they splash and dance along the seashore.

Well, this is something that I’ve been working on during my winter and spring break. This is probably the largest creation that I have made thus far. I wanted to try a larger castle scene with plenty of color. Thanks for viewing!

Mow Cop Castle - Information from the BBC Domesday Reloaded.

Mow Cop castle was built on a ridge
overlooking the surrounding
countryside. It used to have a wall, a
roof and a floor, all that remains
now is a ruined wall and a stone built
tower, which has three windows.
The summer house was built in 1754
by the Wilbrahams who paid the Hardings
to build it. Nobody is sure why it was
built.

Some people say it was built for
people to enjoy, others say it is a
folly. In 1850 there was a court case
about the Wilbrahams and the Sneyds,
about who owned. It was built on the
border of Cheshire and Staffordshire.
It was eventually decided that the
Wilbrahams owned it. The summer house
was given to the National Trust in
1937.

The castle is also situated on the Gritstone Trail.

www.discovergritstonetrail.co.uk/Gallery.aspx?region=7&am...

The climb up to the top is worth it because on a clear day the view across the Cheshire Plain stretches for 70 miles. The Jodrell Bank Observatory and The Welsh Marches, the name of the defined border between England and Wales, can also be seen. It was quite a blustery but bright day with a scattering of snow when I shot this .... and wonderful weather systems sweeping in. The Mountains looking towards The Welsh Marches were white with snow, lovely sight!

By the way, this is shot from the back of the castle...easier climb! Steeper climb from the car park area at the front, but far better views :)

Kōchi Castle is a castle located in Kochi, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Construction was completed in 1611. Much of the original fortress burned down in 1727; it was reconstructed between 1729 and 1753 in the original style.

The castle underwent major restoration from 1948 to 1959. Though no battles were fought at the castle, it is noteworthy because the castle is the original structure, and not a post-war replica, like many others in japan.

NOTE: There are only 12 castles left in Japan that are considered as “original” !!

It is also the only castle in Japan to retain both its original main keep, and its palace, the residence of the local Daimyo. In fact, it is the only castle to have all the original buildings in the honmaru, or innermost ring of defense, still standing.

This is the castle that I displayed at both Brickworl in Chicago and Brickfete in Toronto. At Brickfete it won the Lego run castle contest and I got the entire castle line as a prize.

I uploaded pictures of this a while ago but they were terrible quality, had bad lighting, and a crappy background. Anyway here are better retakes that bring out the detail of this creation to a better extent.

I plan to make another castle for next year.

Castle Kilchurn on the banks of Loch Awe.
Time for a moan now. Went down onto the banks the night before to look for a spot to take a shot during sunrise the next morning.
This is a popular spot for anglers with several groups of tents dotted along these parts of the lochs bank.
Many groups of tents had camp fires blazing, some had brought their own firewood, in the past it was obvious others had resorted to chopping down trees by the amount of stumps around. One group were breaking branches from a healthy trees to fuel their fire as I walked past. Shocking !

Most if not all angling groups were drink fuelled with plenty of litter, drinks cans, polly bags, and food wrappers scattered throughout their camps.
Twice my legs were tangled in discarded fishing line when walking the shoreline. On one occasion a responsible angler offered to cut the line from around my feet as he could see I was struggling to free myself. He made comment and an apology in an embarrassed manner as to the state of the place.

A shocking scene altogether!
I'm all for folks having fun in the great outdoors but there's no excuse for not doing it responsibly whilst respecting the countryside and others around you.

Struggled to get a decent composition with all the tents dotted around the shore. I also noticed several fluorescent bubble floats left tangled in the offshore reeds and grasses. Had hoped for some early morning mist rolling across the water but it never really happened. Think I missed my focus point too....bugger !

Northumberland is well endowed with castles my favourite is Bamburgh Castle. I like the way it rises from the beach in such a dramatic way. It is useful as a model for children building sand castles

A bit of history
Built on a basalt outcrop, the location was previously home to a fort of the native Britons known as Din Guarie and may have been the capital of the British kingdom of the region (see Gododdin, Bryneich and Hen Ogledd) from the realm's foundation in c.420 until 547, the year of the first written reference to the castle. In that year the citadel was captured by the Anglo-Saxon ruler Ida of Bernicia (Beornice) and became Ida's seat. It was briefly retaken by the Britons from his son Hussa during the war of 590 before being relieved later the same year. His grandson Æðelfriþ passed it on to his wife Bebba, from whom the early name Bebbanburgh was derived. The Vikings destroyed the original fortification in 993.
The Normans built a new castle on the site, which forms the core of the present one. William II unsuccessfully besieged it in 1095 during a revolt supported by its owner, Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumbria. After Robert was captured, his wife continued the defence until coerced to surrender by the king's threat to blind her husband. Bamburgh then became the property of the reigning English monarch. Henry II probably built the keep. As an important English outpost, the castle was the target of occasional raids from Scotland. In 1464 during the Wars of the Roses, it became the first castle in England to be defeated by artillery, at the end of a nine-month siege by Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick. The Forster family of Northumberland[3] provided the Crown with twelve successive governors of the castle for some 400 years until the Crown granted ownership to Sir John Forster. The family retained ownership until Sir William Forster (d. 1700) was posthumously declared bankrupt, and his estates, including the castle, were sold to Lord Crew, Bishop of Durham (husband of his sister Dorothy) under an Act of Parliament to settle the debts.
The castle deteriorated but was restored by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian industrialist William Armstrong, who completed the restoration.

On the castle battlements

CONWY CASTLE -- is a gritty, dark stoned fortress ,which has the rare ability to evoke an authentic medieval atmosphere. The first time that visitors catch sight of the castle, commanding a rock above the Conwy Estuary and the dramatic Snowdonia skyline behind it, they know they are in the presence of a historic site , which still casts a powerful spell.
Conwy, constructed by the English monarch Edward I between 1283 and 1289 as one of the key fortresses in his 'iron ring' of castles to contain the Welsh, was built to prompt such a humbling reaction.
A distinguished historian wrote of Conwy, 'Taken as a whole, Conwy is the most magnificent of Edward I's Welsh fortresses'. In comparison to other great Edwardian castles it is also straightforward in design, a reflection of the inherent strength of its siting.
There are no concentric 'walls within walls' here, because they were not needed. Conwy's massive military strength springs from the rock on which it stands and seems to grow naturally. Soaring curtain walls and eight huge round towers give the castle (a World Heritage Inscribed site) an intimidating presence undimmed by the passage of time.
The views from the battlements are breathtaking looking out across mountains and sea and down to the roofless shell of the castles 125ft Great Hall. It is from these battlements that visitors can best appreciate Conwy's other great glory, its ring of town walls.
Conwy is the classic walled town. Its circuit of walls, over three quarters of a mile long and guarded by no less than 22 towers, is one of the finest in the World.

Eltz Castle is a medieval castle built in the 12th century in the hills near the Moselle River. It belongs to the few German castles on the left bank of the Rhine which has never been destroyed. The castle is still owned by a branch of the same family that lived there in the 12th century.

Eltz Castle belongs to the most famous castles in Germany. It adorned the reverse side of the 500 Deutsche Mark note in the last decades of the 20th century.

The French Author Victor Hugo visited the castle and was deeply impressed. He described it in his diary as "tall, mighty, startling, dark".

The collage has notes with short descriptions and links to the individual shots!

Alrighty guys. After much deliberation, here is my castle. Without interior. I will be breaking this castle ASAP, to start on another project.

I would like to take time to thank everyone who supported me, and who gave me feedback, and criticism that made this castle so much better than it would have been without you. I will tag my main inspirations and helpers. :)

Numero Dos in my castle WIP series.

Mostly done with the castle, just details, and the large tower. I need to make a bricklink order for 1x2, 2x2, and 1x4 light gray tiles....Or trade. Anyone have any that they are willing to trade? I would hate to have to spend my money, which I am saving up for something.

If you are tagged, I would like advice because I think you are good at making castles...If you aren't tagged, but have advice please do tell!

I am adding tags showing where things will go.

If you are tagged, that means I think you are an epic castle builder, who should totally give me advice. If you aren't, you should still give advice anyway. :3

Starry night sky and the northern tail of the Milky Way over Castle Rock, a sandstone monument in Castle Valley, Utah (about 16 miles northeast of Moab). There are "notes" on the above photo outlining the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and the Double Cluster. The top portion of this light-painted monument is called Castleton Tower -- a 400-foot (120 m) sandstone tower standing on a 1,000 foot talus cone, rising a total of 1,400 feet (427 m) above the valley.

Light Painting the 'Rock': My son, Chris, assisted me on this photo shoot. He climbed to a bluff 2,000 feet (610 m) to the left of me and painted the monument and tower with a 2-million candle power halogen spotlight. We synchronized his 15 seconds of painting and my 15 seconds of camera exposure time via two-way radios. We were both about 4,750 feet (1,448 m) from the center of the monument (see these 2 photo maps). I used an EF 24mm f1.4L II lens on a Canon 5D Mk2, exposing for 15 seconds @ f2.0, ISO 5000. Here is additional information about how I photograph these "NightScapes".

My new ebook, Milky Way NightScapes, gives extensive details on how to enhance the landscape foreground. Three other chapters cover planning, scouting, forecasting star/landscape alignment, shooting and post processing.

I visited Scotland for the first time recently. I first seen pics of this castle here on flickr and decided that it was gonna be one of the places I had to visit while I was there. Whenever I'm planning a trip to another country I always use flickr as one of my research tools to try and plan a route that will take in as many 'must see places' as possible. I love flickr for that!
I was well impressed by the super scenic Scottish wilderness, I'll defo return to explore more of it.

Check out more pics from the trip here, .....and here..aand here.. aaaand Here!

Thank you Anny ... not just for the awesome tunes, but also for making this, and so many of our other trips together so fantastic ...........you're amazing!! :)

Nagoya Castle (Nagoya-jō?) is a Japanese castle located in Nagoya, central Japan. During the Edo period, Nagoya Castle was the center of one of the most important castle towns in Japan—Nagoya-juku— and it included the most important stops along the Minoji, which linked the Tōkaidō with the Nakasendō.

Here you can find a lot of information about Nagoya Castle:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagoya_Castle

To get a good shot on the castle you need to climb a tree :-))) The guards didn't like that idea...
Going too close with wide angle gives the wrong perspective of the beautiful roof.

The Rouge Castle has been falling into disrepair since the fall of the woodsman kingdom, in the past century. It has since become a favorite hideout for those who still hold to the old ways. Lorded over by a minor noble, the castle is still relatively habitable, and as such, perfect for those who call it their home.

So this is the larger project that I was "taking breaks from". Not the best castle, I know, but it was just a fun build. I started out with no idea what I was going to build at all, and got suggestions from my Dad, brother, and friends, and it went to this. Enjoy.

Carrigadrohid Castle, as the sun sets over the River Lee.

Situated 8km (5 miles) from the town of Macroom in County Cork, Carrigadrohid Castle was built in the 15th Century by the McCarthys of Muskerry.
The castle sits on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the river, which provided a natural crossing-point for bridging the river.
(The name 'Carrigadrohid' comes from the Gaelic, 'Carraig an Droichid', meaning 'The rock of the bridge' ).

The castle is of a 'tower house' design, common in the Middle Ages, built in order to control and defend strategic points such as river crossings. Additionally, they were used as residences for local lords and chieftains.

The castle has been in ruins since the late 1700s.

Aldora castle rests on a island of granite which guards the mighty river Echos that flows through the forbidden mountains into the heart of the kingdom of Anselm. It stands as a bulwark against the outside nations and has never fallen once, due to the tremendous currents that have swept many an attacker to the seas beyond.

This is an entry for a challenge at Classic-Castle where some of the people used to building big castles were challenge to build a castle on a 32x32 baseplate (note: a castle, not a medieval house or something like that).

At first I thought, "oh 32x32 is nothing, I'll just sit down for an evening and see what I come up with", but it turned out to be very hard for me to fit everything I wanted to add onto a 32x32 baseplate, but I'm happy with the result :)

Doune Castle is a late 14th century stronghold near the village of Doune, in the Stirling district of central Scotland. The castle is sited on a wooded bend where the Ardoch Burn flows into the River Teith, across a bridge from the village. It lies 5 miles (8.0 km) north-west of Stirling, where the River Teith flows into the River Forth.

This fine castle is the product of a single building period, and has survived relatively unchanged and complete. It was begun in the late 14th century by the powerful Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany (c.1340–1420), the son of King Robert II of Scotland and Regent of Scotland from 1388 until his death. The castle passed to the crown in 1425, when Albany's son was executed, and was used as a royal hunting lodge and dower house. In the later 16th century, Doune became the property of the Earls of Moray. The castle saw military action during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and Glencairn's rising in the mid-17th century, and during the Jacobite Risings of the late 17th and 18th centuries. By 1800 the castle was ruined, but restoration works were carried out in the 1880s, prior to its passing into state care in the 20th century. It is now maintained by Historic Scotland.

Due to the high status of its builder, Doune was planned as a courtyard with ranges of buildings on each side, although only the northern and north-western buildings were completed. These comprise a large tower house over the entrance, containing the rooms of the Lord and his family, and a separate tower containing the kitchen and guest rooms. The two are linked by the great hall. The stonework is almost all from the late 14th century, with only minor repairs carried out in the 1580s. The restoration of the 1880s replaced the timber roofs and internal floors, as well as interior fittings.

The British comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a parody of the legends of King Arthur by the Monty Python team, was filmed on location in Scotland in 1974. Scenes featuring Doune Castle include:[16]
·At the start of the film, King Arthur (Graham Chapman) and Patsy (Terry Gilliam) approach the east wall of Doune Castle and argue with soldiers of the garrison.
·The song and dance routine at "Camelot" was filmed in the Great Hall.
·The servery and kitchen appear as "Castle Anthrax", where Sir Galahad the Chaste (Michael Palin) is chased by seductive girls.
·The wedding disrupted by Sir Lancelot (John Cleese) was filmed in the courtyard and Great Hall.

After a tiring hike in the Black Mountains in the Beacons, we decided to stop by the Carreg Cennen castle. Wales is for sure the land of Castles..one more beautiful than the other. This castle is situated on a picturesque mound and when we got here, we learned that they close by 6.30 in the evenings. Since we drove a good 40 mins, we didnt want that to go waste. So we sneaked up the hill and managed to catch a glimpse of it.

The best part of this is that we had the castle all to ourselves!! That added to the intrigue of the already exciting experience. The castle ruins are beautiful and gives us an idea of the life that used to swarm in these beautiful monuments hundreds of years ago.

The castle is protected by limestone cliffs to the south and rock-cut ditches to the west. To the north and east there is an outer ward, barbican, gatehouse, drawbridge and deep pits. In the south-east corner of the inner ward steps lead to a vaulted passage and a natural cave beneath the castle. A fresh water spring rises in the cave, which would have been a useful supplement to the castle's water supply of rainwater cisterns during dry weather. The castle is under the care of Cadw, who have renovated and restored some of the remains. The castle is accessible through a local farm, followed by a steep climb up the hill on which it stands.

In early July 1403 Owain Glyndŵr, together with 800 men, attacked Carreg Cennen, but, although inflicting severe damage to the walls, failed to take the castle. It was defended against Glyndwr's forces, who laid siege to it for several months, with Owain himself present, by a man who was to marry one of Glyndwr's daughters just a few years later, Sir John Scudamore of Herefordshire.

Wars of the Roses - The damage was repaired in 1409. However, in 1461, during the Wars of the Roses, Carreg Cennen became a Lancastrian stronghold. A Yorkist force subsequently captured the castle and set about demolishing it with a team of 500 men. - Courtesy Wiki

It was extremely cold with steady headwinds of about 8-12miles. The sun was setting behind the castle and the rain clouds were beginning their southerly migration to settle down to a steady downpour later that night in our camp!

EXIF: ISO 250/ 11mm@f11 30 secs with ND 10.

Castle Rising Castle is one of the most famous 12th Century castles in England.

The stone keep, built in around 1140ad, is amongst the finest surviving examples of its kind anywhere in the country and, together with the massive surrounding earthworks, ensures that Rising is a castle of national importance.

In its time Rising has served as a hunting lodge, royal residence, and for a brief time in the 18th century even housed a mental patient. The most famous period in its history was when it came to the mother of Edward III, Queen Isabella, following her part in the murder of her husband Edward II.

The castle passed to the Howard family in 1544 and it remains in their hands today, the current owner being a descendant of William D'Albini II, the norman baron who raised the castle.

Castle of Velez Blanco (Almeria)
The origin of the castle dates back to the Muslim era. The square was reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs in the year 1488. In the year 1506, began construction of the new building, replacing the previous Muslim stronghold. The following year I was the Marquis of Velez. Pedro Fajardo Chacon was the first that brought the title and who reside in the castle.

This castle was halfway down the hill, about five minutes' walk from where we were staying. The walls around the castle housed a flower shop and a convenience store, inset into the thick stone.

The drawbridge can't be seen in this shot, although you can make out the chains that operate it.

Nowadays, the Llanberis Pass in the wondrous Snowdonia National Park teems with tourists. Some seek Welsh mysteries, others hike the craggy peaks, and still others marvel at the scenery from the comfort of a car. The twin lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris slash through the mountain range creating the Llanberis Pass, an area noted for its rugged beauty, scarred by slate mining, a crossroads through North Wales. Scores of visitors meet in Llanberis, hoping for a ride on the narrow gauge railway or to tour the impressive power plant and the adjoining lakes. Others speed through the village as quickly as possible swerving to avoid wandering pedestrians, anxious to reach another destination. Indeed, their passage may be so brief that they fail to notice one of North Wales' finest treasures: Dolbadarn Castle.

Not a bad shot, considering it was taken from a moving train!

Thurant Castle above Alken, Moselle --

Thurant castle was built from 1198 to 1206 by Count Palatin Heinrich. From 1246 to 1248 it was besieged by the archbishops of Cologne and Trier. After the conquest the castle was divided in two parts, separated by a wall. Each part had its own keep and its own burgrave who managed the castle for his archbishop.

In the War of the Palatinian Succession (1688-1697) most parts of the castle were destroyed by French troups. It was rebuilt in the 20th century.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The foundation of the oldest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia was laid in 1436 during the regency of Eric of Pomerania. He built a citadel, most of which was later destroyed. In 1537, the Danish king Christian III built a new castle, which was finished in 1542. The castle was built according to the stylistic ideals of the Renaissance. The glory days of the castle were in that period, when the royal family was often in residence. When Malmö became Swedish in 1658, it no longer served as a royal castle and the defensive functions of the castle were instead reinforced by the Swedish military forces. The fortress became outmoded in the 18th century and was instead used as a prison until 1914. The castle was extensively restored in the late 1920s. Malmö Museums took over the castle buildings, which were supplemented with a modern addition. Malmö Museums opened their new premises in 1937, which still hold some of the museum's collections.
