The original castle was a small fort, built around 1320, then built to its present form @ 1440, Castle Stalker is entirely authentic; it is one of the best-preserved medieval tower-houses surviving in western Scotland.

Castle Stalker appears in the final scene of Monty Python and the Holy Grail as "The Castle of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh"

Ludlow Castle is a partly ruined uninhabited medieval building in the town of the same name in the English county of Shropshire. It stands on a high point overlooking the River Teme and in the Middle Ages it was an important strategic stronghold for control of the Welsh Borders, and at times the seat of English government in Wales. The castle was probably founded by Walter de Lacy in the late 11th century. Possession of Ludlow Castle descended through the Lacy family until 1115 by which point had Hugh de Lacy died without any children and his property taken over by the king. Pain fitzJohn married Hugh de Lacy's niece, Sybil, and through her acquired a good deal of the family's lands.

Built for Global Challenge VI in the Lands of Classic Castle. This is for the "Unrestricted" Category. My main goals for this build were: to experiment with using dark green 1x1 bricks for the landscape, using bley 1x2 grill bricks for texturing the castle walls, and to create a 'real' castle feel with the build. The castle is fairly simple, but I think it is the most realistic looking castle I've built yet. As always there is a full interior, this time accessible by a hinging wall.

Thenwell Castle is a small castle in southern Lenfald, and one of the few castles not currently under the "Queen's" control. Lord Thenwell has been amassing weapons and armor to be ready for the revolt. Pepin helps with the stockpiling.

This castle sits in Dollar Glen Scotland. It has a commanding position at the top of the glen. It sits on a rocky outcrop above the glen which must have been why it was built there, but the trees that have grown up around it make it hard to get a good angle for a photo.

This is the castle that I displayed at both Brickworl in Chicago and Brickfete in Toronto. At Brickfete it won the Lego run castle contest and I got the entire castle line as a prize.

I uploaded pictures of this a while ago but they were terrible quality, had bad lighting, and a crappy background. Anyway here are better retakes that bring out the detail of this creation to a better extent.

I plan to make another castle for next year.

It is located on the edge of a basalt outcropping in County Antrim (between Portballintrae and Portrush), and is accessible via a bridge connecting it to the mainland. The castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops on either side, which may have been an important factor to the early Christians and Vikings who were drawn to this place where an early Irish fort once stood

Raphoe Castle is a ruined 17th-century castle near Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland. The castle was built in 1636 by the Bishop of Raphoe, John Leslie from stone from a ruined round tower. Leslie was laid siege to within the castle during the Irish Rebellion of 1641, until he was relieved by the Lagganeer army. Leslie was laid siege again during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, with the castle surrendering in 1650. and was damaged by supporters of King James II in 1689 during the Williamite War. A century later, in 1798, the castle was attacked again, this time by the United Irishmen, three of whom were killed during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. The castle was destroyed in an accidental fire in 1838

The Burg Gutenfels (also known as castle Kaub) is a castle 110m above the town of Kaub in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was build in 1220. It was used with Pfalzgrafenstein Castle in the middle of the Rhein and the fortified city of Kaub on the far side to provide an impenetrable toll zone for the Holy Roman Emperor until Prussia purchased the area (1866) and ended this toll in 1867. The Castle is in part of the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site added in 2002.
Kaub (old spelling: Caub) is a town in Germany, state Rhineland-Palatinate, district Rhein-Lahn-Kreis. It is part of the municipality (Verbandsgemeinde) Loreley. It is located on the right bank of the Rhine, approx. 50 km west from Wiesbaden.
It has a Roman Catholic and an Evangelical church, and a statue of General Blücher. The trade mainly consists of the wines of the district. (Wikipedia)

The Faber-Castell Castle

The Faber-Castell Castle is located in Stein, Germany. It was first built by Baron Lothar von Faber in the 1840’s and subsequently in 1898 after Baroness Ottilie von Faber married Count Alexander zu Castell-Rudenhausen, the couple built a prestigious residence next to the Altes Schloss (Old Castle) that had been built by Baron Lothar.

The new and grand castle was constructed in just three years under the supervision of Theodor von Kramer, head of the Bavarian planning department and director of the trade museum. The castles, the conservatory, the chapel and cloister are grouped around a rectangular courtyard. The bell tower – symbolizing the town of Stein - links the two castles. The romantic and breathtaking façade only serves to be a glimpse into the elegance within.

Northumberland is well endowed with castles my favourite is Bamburgh Castle. I like the way it rises from the beach in such a dramatic way. It is useful as a model for children building sand castles

A bit of history
Built on a basalt outcrop, the location was previously home to a fort of the native Britons known as Din Guarie and may have been the capital of the British kingdom of the region (see Gododdin, Bryneich and Hen Ogledd) from the realm's foundation in c.420 until 547, the year of the first written reference to the castle. In that year the citadel was captured by the Anglo-Saxon ruler Ida of Bernicia (Beornice) and became Ida's seat. It was briefly retaken by the Britons from his son Hussa during the war of 590 before being relieved later the same year. His grandson Æðelfriþ passed it on to his wife Bebba, from whom the early name Bebbanburgh was derived. The Vikings destroyed the original fortification in 993.
The Normans built a new castle on the site, which forms the core of the present one. William II unsuccessfully besieged it in 1095 during a revolt supported by its owner, Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumbria. After Robert was captured, his wife continued the defence until coerced to surrender by the king's threat to blind her husband. Bamburgh then became the property of the reigning English monarch. Henry II probably built the keep. As an important English outpost, the castle was the target of occasional raids from Scotland. In 1464 during the Wars of the Roses, it became the first castle in England to be defeated by artillery, at the end of a nine-month siege by Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick. The Forster family of Northumberland[3] provided the Crown with twelve successive governors of the castle for some 400 years until the Crown granted ownership to Sir John Forster. The family retained ownership until Sir William Forster (d. 1700) was posthumously declared bankrupt, and his estates, including the castle, were sold to Lord Crew, Bishop of Durham (husband of his sister Dorothy) under an Act of Parliament to settle the debts.
The castle deteriorated but was restored by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian industrialist William Armstrong, who completed the restoration.

Burg Eltz is a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Moselle River between Koblenz and Trier, Germany. It is still owned by a branch of the same family that lived there in the 12th century, 33 generations ago. The Rübenach and Rodendorf families' homes in the castle are open to the public, while the Kempenich branch of the family uses the other third of the castle. The Palace of Bürresheim (Schloss Bürresheim), the Castle of Eltz and the Castle of Lissingen are the only castles on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate which have never been destroyed.

Source Wikipedia

I'm really satisfied with how this is turning out so far. Building this is a total blast, it's been a long time since I enjoyed building this much.

With 2 full days to go (and a couple of hours left today) this'll be a close call to finish in time, but I'm still positive :D

C&C as ever much appreciated, especially on the start of the castle, which imo is rather nice.

Arundel Castle as seen from the east at sunset - a broken wooden fence leans in towards the distant building and draws your eye towards it. It's winter, there is signs of snow on the ground and a nearby stream is frozen.

I'm muted the colour slightly on this one to bring out the chill of winter - hope it works! Hope also you had a good weekend....You can see some low res versions of my shoot on my Facebook Photo page.

Alrighty guys. After much deliberation, here is my castle. Without interior. I will be breaking this castle ASAP, to start on another project.

I would like to take time to thank everyone who supported me, and who gave me feedback, and criticism that made this castle so much better than it would have been without you. I will tag my main inspirations and helpers. :)

Mostly done with the castle, just details, and the large tower. I need to make a bricklink order for 1x2, 2x2, and 1x4 light gray tiles....Or trade. Anyone have any that they are willing to trade? I would hate to have to spend my money, which I am saving up for something.

If you are tagged, I would like advice because I think you are good at making castles...If you aren't tagged, but have advice please do tell!

Starry night sky and the northern tail of the Milky Way over Castle Rock, a sandstone monument in Castle Valley, Utah (about 16 miles northeast of Moab). There are "notes" on the above photo outlining the Andromedia Galaxy (M31) and the Double Cluster. The top portion of this light-painted monument is called Castleton Tower -- a 400-foot (120 m) sandstone tower standing on a 1,000 foot talus cone, rising a total of 1,400 feet (427 m) above the valley.

Light Painting the 'Rock': My son, Chris, assisted me on this photo shoot. He climbed to a bluff 2,000 feet (610 m) to the left of me and painted the monument and tower with a 2-million candle power halogen spotlight. We synchronized his 15 seconds of painting and my 15 seconds of camera exposure time via two-way radios. We were both about 4,200 feet (1,280 m) from the center of the monument (see these 2 photo maps). I used an EF 24mm f1.4L II lens on a Canon 5D Mk2, exposing for 15 seconds @ f2.0, ISO 6400. Whenever I'm planning a trip to another country I always use flickr as one of my research tools to try and plan a route that will take in as many 'must see places' as possible. I love flickr for that!
I was well impressed by the super scenic Scottish wilderness, I'll defo return to explore more of it.

The castle was built between 1350 and 1375. In 1534 Renswoude was recognised as a knight royal residence. In 1623 castle Borchwal already expire as Johan van Reede become the owner . This Calvinistic priest finds a church more important than the rebuilding, of his own castle. In the house, on its property where Protestant meetinings kept, the house become much too small. He gets authorisation to build its own church near the castle. This fine cupola church was taken in 1641 in use. Then late Johan van Reede demolishes in 1654 the old castle and build the new, current castle.
The castle park developed itself as from that time slowly in a baroque park, with a straight alley pattern. In 1682 Johan are succeeded by his third zoon, Frederik Adriaan. He was married with Maria Duyst van Voorhout. During the absence of her man she let dig now the Grand still existing canal, compared with the castle alley. Because of this big work, much unemployed persons could helped with the work. But it had been especially intended as a surprise for her man, They are Versailles lgarden overs in that time, so they build there own French garden. On 28 November 1985 there was a big fire on the castle. The fire made a damage of millions of guldens. All the next day, they started with setting up wharf and rebuild the damage. This was reached by the energy of the current owner, baron Taets van Amerongen. In the meantime the castle has been restored entirely. For groups the castle be visit.

Nagoya Castle (Nagoya-jō?) is a Japanese castle located in Nagoya, central Japan. During the Edo period, Nagoya Castle was the center of one of the most important castle towns in Japan—Nagoya-juku— and it included the most important stops along the Minoji, which linked the Tōkaidō with the Nakasendō.

Here you can find a lot of information about Nagoya Castle:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagoya_Castle

To get a good shot on the castle you need to climb a tree :-))) The guards didn't like that idea...
Going too close with wide angle gives the wrong perspective of the beautiful roof.

The Rouge Castle has been falling into disrepair since the fall of the woodsman kingdom, in the past century. It has since become a favorite hideout for those who still hold to the old ways. Lorded over by a minor noble, the castle is still relatively habitable, and as such, perfect for those who call it their home.

So this is the larger project that I was "taking breaks from". Not the best castle, I know, but it was just a fun build. I started out with no idea what I was going to build at all, and got suggestions from my Dad, brother, and friends, and it went to this. Enjoy.

Cochem Castle - Cochem, Germany.

Cochem is a town in Rhineland-Palatinate, western part of Germany, and capital of the district Cochem-Zell. It is situated in the valley of the Mosel, at the foot of a hill surrounded by a feudal castle, the Reichsburg, dating from 1051. The town is surrounded by vineyards. The castle of Cochem was first mentioned in year 1130. It was destroyed in 1689, and in 1868, Jakob Louis Ravené purchased it for 300 gold marks and built it in its present form. Since 1978, the city of Cochem owns it.

What a lovely combination - a castle and a river. Cochem is perhaps my favorite castle city that make up the Rhine/Mosel valley. It really is a pleasant place to just sit down, have an ice cream, and enjoy the view, but not necessarily to take night photos. I found it to be very dark especially at the peak of twilight. No details on the bottom of the hill, only shadows. The city was not well lit, and even with a moon that night, it wasn't bright enough to compensate for the lack of light. This was taken at the start of blue hour, only a few minutes after the lights turned on. Then it got too dark after that. If there's anything to be pleased about, it was that the river - usually busy during the day with tourist cruises - was clear and traffic free and gave me a nice reflection.

Castle Butrón is a medieval building located in Gatica (Province of Biscay, Spain). It is surrounded by forest and towns that are far little among themselves, as Algorta, Plencia, Munguia, and Lauquíniz Maruri.

The building's origins date back to medieval times, although its present appearance is a deep renovation, completed in the nineteenth century by the Marquis of Cubas.

Based on the foundation and part of the cylindrical towers, the rest was built in the style Germanic, with large dose of fantasy, far from the castle itself prototype of the region. To some extent, it has parallels with the nineteenth-century Bavarian castle. The chateau was designed more as a hobby and visual appeal for an apartment house, in fact, it is very uncomfortable as housing, as the towers do not have much usable space and some rooms are connected by walkways and outdoor escalators.

The building is surrounded by a lush park with palm trees and exotic species. The entire ensemble was adapted for a time as catering establishment with medieval atmosphere shows. Later it was seized and auctioned off.

Now depends on the Vizcaya Provincial Council, under the protection of the general declaration of the Decree of April 22, 1949, and Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage.

For those who speaks Spanish, I only found the description in Spain on Wikipedia
Castillo_de_Butrón, Wikipedia

Recommended to view Large On Black

Carrigadrohid Castle, as the sun sets over the River Lee.

Situated 8km (5 miles) from the town of Macroom in County Cork, Carrigadrohid Castle was built in the 15th Century by the McCarthys of Muskerry.
The castle sits on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the river, which provided a natural crossing-point for bridging the river.
(The name 'Carrigadrohid' comes from the Gaelic, 'Carraig an Droichid', meaning 'The rock of the bridge' ).

The castle is of a 'tower house' design, common in the Middle Ages, built in order to control and defend strategic points such as river crossings. Additionally, they were used as residences for local lords and chieftains.

The castle has been in ruins since the late 1700s.

Aldora castle rests on a island of granite which guards the mighty river Echos that flows through the forbidden mountains into the heart of the kingdom of Anselm. It stands as a bulwark against the outside nations and has never fallen once, due to the tremendous currents that have swept many an attacker to the seas beyond.

This is an entry for a challenge at Classic-Castle where some of the people used to building big castles were challenge to build a castle on a 32x32 baseplate (note: a castle, not a medieval house or something like that).

At first I thought, "oh 32x32 is nothing, I'll just sit down for an evening and see what I come up with", but it turned out to be very hard for me to fit everything I wanted to add onto a 32x32 baseplate, but I'm happy with the result :)

Doune Castle is a late 14th century stronghold near the village of Doune, in the Stirling district of central Scotland. The castle is sited on a wooded bend where the Ardoch Burn flows into the River Teith, across a bridge from the village. It lies 5 miles (8.0 km) north-west of Stirling, where the River Teith flows into the River Forth.

This fine castle is the product of a single building period, and has survived relatively unchanged and complete. It was begun in the late 14th century by the powerful Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany (c.1340–1420), the son of King Robert II of Scotland and Regent of Scotland from 1388 until his death. The castle passed to the crown in 1425, when Albany's son was executed, and was used as a royal hunting lodge and dower house. In the later 16th century, Doune became the property of the Earls of Moray. The castle saw military action during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and Glencairn's rising in the mid-17th century, and during the Jacobite Risings of the late 17th and 18th centuries. By 1800 the castle was ruined, but restoration works were carried out in the 1880s, prior to its passing into state care in the 20th century. It is now maintained by Historic Scotland.

Due to the high status of its builder, Doune was planned as a courtyard with ranges of buildings on each side, although only the northern and north-western buildings were completed. These comprise a large tower house over the entrance, containing the rooms of the Lord and his family, and a separate tower containing the kitchen and guest rooms. The two are linked by the great hall. The stonework is almost all from the late 14th century, with only minor repairs carried out in the 1580s. The restoration of the 1880s replaced the timber roofs and internal floors, as well as interior fittings.

The British comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a parody of the legends of King Arthur by the Monty Python team, was filmed on location in Scotland in 1974. Scenes featuring Doune Castle include:[16]
·At the start of the film, King Arthur (Graham Chapman) and Patsy (Terry Gilliam) approach the east wall of Doune Castle and argue with soldiers of the garrison.
·The song and dance routine at "Camelot" was filmed in the Great Hall.
·The servery and kitchen appear as "Castle Anthrax", where Sir Galahad the Chaste (Michael Palin) is chased by seductive girls.
·The wedding disrupted by Sir Lancelot (John Cleese) was filmed in the courtyard and Great Hall.

After a tiring hike in the Black Mountains in the Beacons, we decided to stop by the Carreg Cennen castle. Wales is for sure the land of Castles..one more beautiful than the other. This castle is situated on a picturesque mound and when we got here, we learned that they close by 6.30 in the evenings. Since we drove a good 40 mins, we didnt want that to go waste. So we sneaked up the hill and managed to catch a glimpse of it.

The best part of this is that we had the castle all to ourselves!! That added to the intrigue of the already exciting experience. The castle ruins are beautiful and gives us an idea of the life that used to swarm in these beautiful monuments hundreds of years ago.

The castle is protected by limestone cliffs to the south and rock-cut ditches to the west. To the north and east there is an outer ward, barbican, gatehouse, drawbridge and deep pits. In the south-east corner of the inner ward steps lead to a vaulted passage and a natural cave beneath the castle. A fresh water spring rises in the cave, which would have been a useful supplement to the castle's water supply of rainwater cisterns during dry weather. The castle is under the care of Cadw, who have renovated and restored some of the remains. The castle is accessible through a local farm, followed by a steep climb up the hill on which it stands.

In early July 1403 Owain Glyndŵr, together with 800 men, attacked Carreg Cennen, but, although inflicting severe damage to the walls, failed to take the castle. It was defended against Glyndwr's forces, who laid siege to it for several months, with Owain himself present, by a man who was to marry one of Glyndwr's daughters just a few years later, Sir John Scudamore of Herefordshire.

Wars of the Roses - The damage was repaired in 1409. However, in 1461, during the Wars of the Roses, Carreg Cennen became a Lancastrian stronghold. A Yorkist force subsequently captured the castle and set about demolishing it with a team of 500 men. - Courtesy Wiki

It was extremely cold with steady headwinds of about 8-12miles. The sun was setting behind the castle and the rain clouds were beginning their southerly migration to settle down to a steady downpour later that night in our camp!

Edinburgh Castle is an ancient stronghold which dominates the sky-line of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal Castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.

Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the fortifications were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The notable exception is St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, which dates from the early 12th century.

The Castle is now in the care of Historic Scotland, and is Scotland's second-most-visited tourist attraction. Although the garrison left in the 1920s, there is still a military presence at the Castle, largely ceremonial and administrative, and including a number of regimental museums. It is also the backdrop to the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and has become a recognisable symbol of Edinburgh and of Scotland.

Taken from Wikipedia

The present castle stands on land where evidence suggest there used to be a hill fort. It is thought that a mixture of large timber built round houses and straight-sided structures occupy the interior. A timber laced stone rampart defines and defends the hill fort. The timber lacing caught fire and burnt with such intensity that the surrounding stonework melted, or vitrified. This firing happened about 1000 AD and seems to mark the end of the hill-fort’s existence.

It was about this date that the independence of the British Kingdom of Strathclyde ceased, being absorbed into the kingdom of Scotland.

The place name Dundonald means “Donald’s Fort”. Historians do not know who Donald was but he may have been one of three kings of that name who ruled in Strathclyde in the 10th century.
There have been three medieval castles present on this site. The first was built by one of the stewards of the king of Scots, most probably Walter, the first steward, who came to Scotland in 1136. There is no surviving evidence of this castle above ground today.

The second castle was built in the late 13th Century by Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward, this castle was predominantly built of stone. It would have been one of the grandest baronial residences of its time. It was largely destroyed by the English during the Wars of Scottish Independence wars of independence in the early 14th century. There is little remaining of this castle, however there is a well and a rounded stump of a tower near to the present castle.

The present castle.
The third castle was built by Robert Stewart, probably to mark his accession to the throne as Robert II in 1371. It was three storeys high.

The top floor above the lofty stone vault was the upper hall – the great hall. It was for the more private use of the king and family.

The first floor was the lower of the two halls – the laigh hall. It would have been used for more public activities like feasting and the holding of the baron court.

The ground floor was a storage area. It was probably originally subdivided providing cellars for different commodities like wine, ale, foodstuffs and fuel.

The tower house was extended in the 15th century to add additional private chambers and a prison. The outer courtyard (called more properly the barmkin) was completed and ancillary buildings (stables, bakehouses, brewhouses, smithy, etc) built against the barmkin wall.

The third castle comprises almost everything you see above ground today, including the tower which dominates the hill.
The castle today
There is a visitor centre at the foot of the hill, which includes a cafe, souvenir shop and an interpretive exhibition. The exhibition outlines the history of the Castle and its preceding buildings with detailed models of the earlier castles on the site.

The visitor centre is owned by South Ayrshire Council and is operated on their behalf by The Friends of Dundonald Castle.

Just started tinkering with HDR.

Castle Rising Castle is one of the most famous 12th Century castles in England.

The stone keep, built in around 1140ad, is amongst the finest surviving examples of its kind anywhere in the country and, together with the massive surrounding earthworks, ensures that Rising is a castle of national importance.

In its time Rising has served as a hunting lodge, royal residence, and for a brief time in the 18th century even housed a mental patient. The most famous period in its history was when it came to the mother of Edward III, Queen Isabella, following her part in the murder of her husband Edward II.

The castle passed to the Howard family in 1544 and it remains in their hands today, the current owner being a descendant of William D'Albini II, the norman baron who raised the castle.

Westhove Castle was probably built in the beginning of the 13th century, between the villages of Domburg and Oostkapelle. It consisted of a moated castle and bailey separated by a moat. The buildings on the bailey had two entrances and two round towers. The castle itself also had two towers.

The castle and the surrounding lands became the property of the Abbey of Middelburg in 1277. It served as the summer residence of the abbots.

Around 1560 the castle's west side was extended. And in 1562 the castle became a episcopal summer mansion.

In 1572 it was stormed by the Geuzen because of its Spanish occupation and partially destroyed. Only the north face of the castle was spared. After this the castle was rebuild and again made suitable for habitation.

In the second half of the 19th century the outside walls were plastered but in the beginning of the 20th century this plaster was removed.

In the beginning of the 20th century the castle was used as a nursing home for children.
During WW II the castle was again heavily damaged. In 1948 the outside of the castle was repaired followed in 1977 by a thorough restoration of its interiors. Because of all these changes in the castles history, caused by damages and the following repairs, not much remains of the real medieval castle. What we see today mostly dates back to the 17th and 18th century.

The castle is now used as a Youth Hostel and lies in a nature reserve only a couple of minutes walk from the beaches.

This castle was halfway down the hill, about five minutes' walk from where we were staying. The walls around the castle housed a flower shop and a convenience store, inset into the thick stone.

The drawbridge can't be seen in this shot, although you can make out the chains that operate it.

Nowadays, the Llanberis Pass in the wondrous Snowdonia National Park teems with tourists. Some seek Welsh mysteries, others hike the craggy peaks, and still others marvel at the scenery from the comfort of a car. The twin lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris slash through the mountain range creating the Llanberis Pass, an area noted for its rugged beauty, scarred by slate mining, a crossroads through North Wales. Scores of visitors meet in Llanberis, hoping for a ride on the narrow gauge railway or to tour the impressive power plant and the adjoining lakes. Others speed through the village as quickly as possible swerving to avoid wandering pedestrians, anxious to reach another destination. Indeed, their passage may be so brief that they fail to notice one of North Wales' finest treasures: Dolbadarn Castle.

Dunguaire Castle (Irish: Dún Guaire) is a 16th-century tower house on the southeastern shore of Galway Bay in County Galway, Ireland, near Kinvarra. The castle's 75 foot-tower and its defensive wall have been restored to excellent condition, and the grounds are open to tourists during the summer. It is thought to be the most-photographed castle in Ireland.

The castle was built by the Hynes clan in 1520, a family who may have been associated with the area since 662, when the site is believed to have once been the royal palace of Guaire Aidhne, the legendary king of Connacht and progenitor of the clan. Dunguaire Castle was transferred in the 17th century to Oliver Martin, (father of Richard Martin fitz Oliver). It remained in his family until it was purchased in the early 20th century by the surgeon and poet Oliver St. John Gogarty. Gogarty began restoring the castle and established it as the meeting place for the leading figures of the Celtic Revival, such as W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Augusta, Lady Gregory, and John Millington Synge.
The castle was acquired in 1954 by Christobel Lady Ampthill, who completed the restoration work started by Gogarty and lived there until her death.
When Dunguaire Castle is open to the public, during the summer months, a Medieval Banquet is held every night with costumed performers who recite Irish literature and play traditional Irish music.

Thurant Castle above Alken, Moselle --

Thurant castle was built from 1198 to 1206 by Count Palatin Heinrich. From 1246 to 1248 it was besieged by the archbishops of Cologne and Trier. After the conquest the castle was divided in two parts, separated by a wall. Each part had its own keep and its own burgrave who managed the castle for his archbishop.

In the War of the Palatinian Succession (1688-1697) most parts of the castle were destroyed by French troups. It was rebuilt in the 20th century.
