The meeting took place as part of the official visit of Mr. Jean-Marc Ayrault, Prime Minister of the French Republic, to Canada. Canada and France share a priority for La Francophonie in 2013: the development of an economic strategy, in accordance with a decision taken at the Kinshasa Summit. This work has already started. The two countries will also be active in getting ready for the next Francophonie Games, an important event that France will host in Nice in September. Canada and France are two pillars of La Francophonie. Members of the International Organization of La Francophonie since its founding in 1970, Canada and France together contribute nearly 75 percent of its budget. The two countries defend the same principles: a political role for La Francophonie, the promotion of democracy and respect for human rights among member countries, and the defence of the role of the French language and of cultural diversity internationally. This pair of vases or lamp bases by Edward Colonna at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond dates from circa 1901-1903 and is made of hard-paste porcelain and enamel. German-born Colonna (1862-1948) was an acclaimed designer and architect active in the United States, Canada and France. At the age of 20 he was in New York, employed by Louis Tiffany then a few years later by Bruce Price, a New York architect. In 1885 he was in Dayton, Ohio, working as chief designer for Barney & Smith, a manufacturer of railroad cars. He left in 1888 and set up business in Montreal where he obtained several commissions from Canadian Pacific Railway as a designer of railroad car interiors and as architect of many railroad stations in western Canada. By the end of the century he was in Paris, working as an artisan in glassware, jewelry and furniture for Siegfried Bing and his gallery, Maison de l'Art Nouveau. Although winning acclaim as a gifted artist, prosperity eluded him; Colonna returned to Canada with the closing of Bing’s enterprise, working as an interior decorator and antiques dealer. In 1923, he retired to France, his health failing, eventually enduring total paralysis of his legs. He died in 1948 and was buried in a pauper’s grave, unmarked, in Nice, France.
