The vehicle in real life is a Series 2 Balloon Car, built in 1935 by the English Electric factory in Preston, and is one of the survivors from the "old and original" tram fleet in Blackpool, albeit as a "refurbished" car, with widened doorways, and new features such as CCTV, "plug" doors (720's new doors are unique in being the only ones without glass reaching to the bottom of the door across the whole "modernised" fleet) new bumpers, designed to stop "surfers" from riding on the back of the tram, and fixed bus-stlye seating. It’s a great shame that this station was demolished when the replacement station (the old excursion terminal building) was rebuilt and reopened. For many years now Blackpool has needed an all-purpose building for conferences and concerts etc. Blackpool North could have been converted for such use similar to Manchester Central (G-MEX) instead of being demolished as quickly as possible. It’s certainly a pity that the magnificent station buffet was not retained as it even would have put the world famous Stalybridge buffet to shame. These days the buffet would probably have been a listed building. Amazingly the whole station building was repainted at great expense just one year before it was demolished. Nothing ever changes! A new Fine Fare store (now Wilkinsons) with a multi-storey car park above was built on the site of the old station. The store is not exactly the best looking building in Blackpool. It was a nice day and we had a lucky sky as shown. Hope you are enjoying your festive season! In the background is Whinney Heys (Victoria) Hospital under constuction. The foundation stone of the hospital was laid by Lord Derby on 09 June 1933. Also in the backgound is Stanley Park municipal airport which was opened by The Prime Minister, Ramsey Macdonald on 02 June 1931. Staning windmill and Brockholes wood can also be seen. A beach We took Andrew on a surprise visit to Blackpool (his very first visit) this weekend as it was a holiday weekend in Glasgow. We left on Thursday evening after school/ work, telling him that he was going to a dental appointment at Monklands Hospital (we had managed to convince him that the waiting lists at the Dental Hospital were so long that they were sending patients to other hospitals!) We got to the border before he asked where we were going and his face was an absolute picture when we told him! We spent Friday morning wandering along the promenade and piers before going to the Pleasure Beach in the afternoon. Our timing was absolutely perfect - it wasn't very busy because it was only a Glasgow holiday and we didn't have to queue for very long at the rides. By Friday night, however, the masses had started appearing so we had an early night at the hotel before heading back to Scotland via the Lake District on Saturday. We had a fab time and I managed to go on all of the roller coasters despite being scared of heights, but I don't think we'd have enjoyed it as much if it was very busy, or if we were staying for longer. An evening looking at the Illuminations and a day exploring the piers and pleasure beach was more than enough for me and we were glad to escape to the beautiful Lake District on Saturday before getting home Saturday evening. Splendid craic was had by all and some very carfefully edited pics may surface here :-) Lovely sunny but blustery afternoon there. This was edited and put up whilst sitting waiting for a connecting flight from Dublin to Cork later the same day so I'm not sure I did the best I could ! Blackpool boasts some important landmarks, most of which appeared originally as part of the flourishing tourist industry. * Blackpool Tower, opened in 1894; it has been a dominant landmark of the Blackpool skyline since that time. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower of Paris, France, it is 158m (518ft 9in) tall. Beneath the tower is a complex of leisure facilities, entertainment venues and restaurants, including the world famous Tower Ballroom and Tower Circus. * North Pier - The northernmost of Blackpool's three piers. It includes a small shopping arcade, a small tramway and the North Pier Theatre toward the end of the pier. The pier end also used to have a helicopter pad, but this was damaged at Christmas 1997 by a windstorm and collapsed into the Irish Sea. * Central Pier - The middle pier, includes a large ferris wheel and shops. * South Pier - The southernmost pier. This is a screenshot still taken from the BBC and BFI film 'The Lost World of Mitchell and Kenyon', a fascinating insight into the late Victorian and Edwardian world of north England. Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon were early commercial cinematographers based in Blackburn Lancashire. After their company went out of business in the 1920s the 800 films of their archive were sealed in steel barrels and lay undiscovered until 1994. They have now been restored by the British Film Institute. Note the Tram rails.. The cameraman is almost certainly on the upper deck of a tram.
