20130117 Aurora Hunting Loch Leven (Explored)

For the first time in some 2 months there was the potential to view the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in Scotland again last night so off I ventured with my little sister in the freezing conditions to Loch Leven in Kinross. After meeting up with Ade it appeared we had arrived 30 minutes to late and had missed the Aurora at its peak with a big green band and red flares and spikes coming off it......gutted isn't the word!!!

Anyway, managed to capture a very feint green band to the left of the hill through the clouds, as gutted as I was missing the main display I am still very lucky to see anything.

The hunt continues.......

Orb Meets Aurora

So, last night I went down to the beach for a bit of lightpainting and low and behold look what was waiting for me, the elusive aurora borealis. This is the first time I've managed to photograph them.

After a few hours of fun I packed up to head home, once I reached the car I realised I'd lost my keys! I searched the beach in a panic but couldnt find them, couldnt so had to phone a taxi home, went back with spare key this morning to find that I'd somehow managed to lock the damn things in the boot when getting the 550 out................

Clear skies again tonight so I'm going out hunting again.
Scratch that, weather turned out terrible :(

I dont think that I know any person that would not be fascinated by Northern Lights. I had a chance to see it in few places, included in Alaska, Norway or here in Iceland. Last night was fantastic, maybe not the strongest display but we were still amazed by those dancing lights above our heads. It should have been dragonite meteor night but I have seen only 5 falling stars, the aurora was on the other hand incredible experience. Thanks to nearly full Moon, the sky was nicely blue which I prefer to usual black color of the night.

The Midwestern United States at night with Aurora Borealis is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 29 crew member on the International Space Station. The night skies viewed from the space station are illuminated with light from many sources. For example, the Midwestern United States presents a night-time appearance not unlike a patchwork quilt when viewed from orbit. The artificial light from human settlements appears everywhere with a characteristic yellow tinge in this photograph. But green light of the Aurora Borealis also appears strongly in this view (top left)—even seeming to be reflected off Earth's surface—in Canada—beneath the aurora. A small white patch of light is almost certainly lightning from a storm on the East coast (top right). Part of the International Space Station appears across the top of the image. This photograph highlights the Chicago, IL, metropolitan area as the largest cluster of lights at center, next to the dark patch of Lake Michigan. The other largest metropolitan areas include St. Louis, MO (lower right), Minneapolis--St. Paul, MN (left) and the Omaha--Council Bluffs region on the Nebraska--Iowa border (lower left). City light clusters give an immediate sense of relative city size; demographers have used night time satellite imagery to make estimates of city populations, especially in the developing world where city growth can be very rapid. The U.S. northeast seaboard lies in the most oblique (meaning viewed at an angle) part of the image at top right, just beyond the Appalachian Mts., a dark winding zone without major cities.

Scales change significantly in oblique views: Omaha is only 200 kilometers from Des Moines, but appears roughly the same distance from Minneapolis—which is actually 375 kilometers to the north of Des Moines. In addition to the major metropolitan areas, the rectangular NS/EW-oriented pattern of townships is clearly visible in the rural, lower left part of the image. This pattern instantly gives the sense of north orientation (toward the top left corner) and is a distinctive characteristic of the United States, so that ISS crew members can quickly know which continent they are flying over even at night. In contrast to the regular township pattern, interstate highways converge on St. Louis (e.g. Hwy 44), Chicago and other large cities, much like wheel spokes around a central hub. Rivers—major visual features in daylight—become almost invisible at night. The course of the Mississippi River appears as a slightly meandering zone from Minneapolis through St. Louis (dashed line)—the river course continues out of the lower right corner of the image.

Well it was meant to be a different shot today and another tourist info, but... Flickr must be the only place/program on this planet, that when you CANCEL the long essay you have just written, it does just that. No questions asked. So after I have written the text, and push cancel by mistake, it did just that. I suppose that is the lesson in universal ballance: some programs become highly irritating with the amount of "are you sure? are really sure? Do you want to call a friend?" questions, and some are like your partner in a huff, and do it without any concern you might be making a mistake. So thats why you are looking at yet another Aurora.

Rant over :-)

The shot: When aurora decided to take a break and died down a bit I have decided to take a shot of Milky way, but as soon as I pressed the shutter, aurora came back. It was a bit frustrating, but my frustration was certainly sorted by the circling clouds. After about 5-6 shots of Milky way and aurora, they took over the sky, and there was no more milky way, no more aurora. Sorted :-)

I would also like to take this opportunity and answer a question I have been asked, in case some of you may be wondering the same but are too star struck to ask: Why do you write your Icelandic blog on Flickr and not on separate blog?
I have actually asked a similar question myself: why do people have separate blogs if they post on here and then they put zillions of links in their profiles on here to navigate public to them? Truth is, the internet is full of crap, and Im sure it can do without another one added to it. Im sure I wouldnt have to loose sleep over it and my blog would get lost in the mess anyway and nobody would even notice it. And that is it. Here I might get 50-60 views, some nice comments that are really appreciated, and if I have done well even a Fave. But how many blogs are out there go barely noticed? And that is why. The fact that Im lazy and computer illitare doesnt even come into it, honest :-) And most importatly, at least Im only soiling the same spot, not all over the place ;-)

Photograph from P & O house magazine.

Aurora photographed on the 10 Feb 2000 making her first journey down the River Ems taking her from her German shipbuilders yard (Meyer Werft) to the sea at Eemshaven , a 45 kilometer journey.
In passing down the river to the sea Aurora had to squeeze past a railway bidge with only 4 meters to spare on each side between the supports. The actual bridge having been dismantled to allow her to pass. There was also a set of power lines over the river which had to be tensioned and tied together to give increased clearance for the vessel. The river at its shallowest point , there was only a 1 metre of water beneath the vessel.
The journey took 2 hours and although she was accompanied by tugs Aurora made the journey under her own power.

Aurora Borealis, looking north and just above the horizon more or less right at the constellation Cassiopeia from a position to the east of Glasgow, MT. You can also see two satellites tracking through the image, one northwards, one southwards, and a military jet zipping along westward near the bottom of the image, that one is easier to see full-screen. Busy night, eh? Each frame here represents about four seconds; the playback is quite a bit faster than that, so this qualifies as bona-fide time lapse. The clip was constructed from 40 still frames from my EOS50D, taken the evening of the onset of the April 3-4-5-6 geomagnetic storm, all from the same point and with the same camera settings (details below.)

***Let this load, then play it at least twice... flickr, aside from crushing the resolution, seems to have a problem with replay speed in some browsers. This should run for a total of about four seconds.

I uploaded this at about 4x this resolution, and was very disappointed to see it reduced down so far.

Oh well. I used Canon's 50mm ƒ/1.4 lens, wide open, after manually focusing it on a star. All these shots were taken at ISO 3200, 4 seconds exposure, from a fixed and locked tripod, adjusted and balanced to the same criteria using Aperture 3, then combined using the Mac's movie software and converted from .dv to .mp4 using Handbrake.

Sent my negative to Kodak through Walgreens before using a fancy Hollywood Laboratory and they didn't do too bad when they made a slide from my negative showing the atomic nitrogen bluish purplish emissions along the top of the auroral glow.....see El Paso Meteor Aurora for the same shot scanned by Hollywood Laboratory www.graytone.com in 2002 when they were known as P&Q (Producers and Quantity Photo).....I still can't figure out how they scanned my shot so amazingly at:

.....this photo was also leased by National Geographic Magazine in Oct 2000 for a sum of $1,000.00....that was an amazing honor...........you never know how far your photos can take you......i'm living proof!!!!!!

A weak group of stripes seem to go horizontally over the aurora lights this evening. I believe there were a thin layer of clouds over the sky that made all the images of the aurora this way. So, there is no wrong about the image!
