You're looking at what hangs above the main entrance to the Remington Arms Co. in Ilion, NY. Remington is America's oldest gun manufacturer, founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington (1793-1861). I went there on a genealogical pilgrimage. My great-great-great grandmother's brother was a gunsmith of some repute. Good repute rather than ill repute, which is a nice change of pace. James H. Merrill was his name. The feds liked one of his guns and ordered about 200 of them shortly before the Civil War. James didn't have the facilities to make that many guns himself, so he arranged to have them produced at the Remington factory in Ilion. So, off I went to take a look. The factory doesn't seem to have changed much from the one in these historical postcards -- except that the Erie Canal is gone. The factory is trussed up pretty well now, too. Remington Arms isn't stupid. A factory full of guns is quite an enticement to miscreants of all stripes. Side entrances have long since been (tastefully) bricked up while barbed wire prevents access to the interior buildings. If someone is looking for an easy place to burglarize, this isn't it. What interests me the most is the Remington banner below the flag. The statement that "the world's largest army ain't in China" is a variation on a popular quote about why Japan didn't invade the U.S. mainland after bombing Pearl Harbor: "There would be a rifle behind each blade of grass.". The latter is some pretty strong imagery. I heard someone use it on the radio just the other day. It's a statement about the 2nd amendment to the U.S. Constitution i.e., the right to bear arms. I'm not here to debate gun rights/control, however. I simply note that upon looking into the phrase "a rifle behind every blade of grass" today, I learned that the Japanese admiral to whom the quote is always attributed never uttered those words! Nobody did, according to factcheck dot org. Geesh. How about everybody getting their facts straight? This brings to mind one of my favorite quotes, one which I'm sure is true. Per the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan from New York: “You're entitled to your own opinions. You're not entitled to your own facts." 'Nuff said. p.s. I bought two Manfrotto Heavy Duty Flex Arms. These are stiff and strong enough where they would probably hold my camera in place, but I just use them for my SB800's. The 5001 Light Stand compacts to 20" when folded up. Would fit in a carry-on bag. With the Flex Arm in place it has a maximum height of 94 inches (7.8 feet). Way more than I will ever need. If I ever need light way up high, this is my solution right here! A little while back I read a book on body language. The arms are interesting appendages when it comes to body language. The arms tend to be clever expanding devices that make us bigger or smaller, reaching out without having to displace the rest of the body. Sometimes the arms act as a doorway to the body and self. When arms are crossed, they form a closed defensive shield that sends a message that you're blocking off the outside world, but sometimes crossed arms can mean simply a relaxed position. I wanted to capture a self-portrait that included my arms crossed to reflect a relaxed, seated position but also tell of me being a closed, introverted person. Once assembled, the whole piece as in the photo weighs 200gr. I am not sure whether the material used is similar to the material that Orbis manufacturer uses for their model. But, trust me, the camera's tripod mount collar as well as any hot shoes used to keep the flash in place on the arm will snap much earlier than the bracket may start bending, let alone break! The price of the Orbis Arm is unreasonable, IMHO, especially when I know how much it costed me to make the one above!!! Ingredients included: one lightstand, one extentable painting pole, one swivel bracket and a super-clamp. I cut the thread off of the pole and drilled a 10mm hole in it's place, then inserted a 10mm stainless steel bit of rod in to the hole to accomodate my swivel bracket. I'm yet to get a weight made for the end of the pole, should be easy enough to make. I tried the setup out tonight with great results. Blogged HERE. The LCAs are an important suspension part that controls the position of the front wheels. Each LCA on this car has two ball joints and an end inserted into the bushing. If a play has developed at any of the ball joints, as is the case on the passenger side of my car, the wheel will have a play that can cause uneven wear of the tire (cupping) and the car pulling to the side when going over uneven roads (bump steer). It's easy to test the LCAs. Simply jack up the car so that the front wheels are off the ground. Rock each front wheel back and forth. If there is any play, there is a problem with the LCA or bushing. Replacing just the bushings is much easier. Apparently the LCAs are a common problem on some model years of the E46 because a nylon lining is used for the ball joints which tends to fail at around 60K miles. Mine started having problems at around 50K miles. The ball joints are pressed into the LCA and requires a power press to remove and install. DIYers need to replace the entire LCA assemblies. This guide illustrates the steps for replacing them. After the replacement, the car will go back to solid and firm handling, remind us why we got these cars in the first place. Allocate at least 4 to 5 hours for this job if you're doing this for the first time, even though it can be done in 2 to 3 hours if you're familiar with it. Then again, you wouldn't be reading this if you had done it before. This one is an attempt to identify the site of the former Gainsborough pub, the Newcastle Arms, which, as far as I can ascertain, closed either just before or shortly after WW2. The photo on the right shows a view of the old pub (the building centre-right with the half-barrel mounted on the wall. It was located in one of the oldest and certainly narrowest streets in town, Caskgate Street, which was full of old riverside warehouses, tiny tenement housing, this pub, and an old Chapel (later a cinema). This building was used for various purposes - a second-hand furniture shop, and a sort of a youth club I believe, after it's days as the Newcastle Arms, and finally fell during the demolition of the street in 1968. The aerial view on the left (courtesy of Google Earth), shows current-day Caskgate Street, and the car park and riverside gardens than now occupy the original site. The yesllow line traces the path of the original Caskgate Street, and the red area is the pub itself. (Data from the 1927 OS map of the area). Before gaining its independence, Sri Lanka (known then as Ceylon) used the coat of arms of the United Kingdom as the national emblem. When Sri Lanka gained its independence from the British in 1948, the need of a proper national emblem arose. A committee was named in order to fulfill the importance. According to its recommendation a national emblem was adopted in 1952, whic featured the same lion, over a banner, topped with a crown (symbolising that Sri Lanka was a commonwealth realm). When Sri Lanka became a republic in 1972, the crown was removed and was replaced by the current coat of arms was introduced, featuring elements from socialist heraldry (such as the ears of corn and the cogweal) as well as traditional symbols of Sri Lanka. A committee to establish a new coat of arms was established. The committee consisted of: Mr S.S. Kulathilake (the minister of Cultural affairs), Mr Nissanka Wijerathne (the secretary of the ministry of Cultural affairs), Dr Nandadeva Wijesekera, Prof. Senarath Paranavithana, Mr M.R. Premarathne and Mr. Roland Silva. The coat of arms created by them, and used since 1972 is their creation.
