My latest piece is something I am really happy with. It's another woodland inspired piece. Its a bracelet of twigs and branches, covered in little leaves and fungal forms. The piece is sculpted in bronze, and is embellished with Jade beads. He just returned from three World Cup events with 6 medals. He won silver in Berlin on 30 and 31 October in 400 and 1500 meter freestyle. A few days later he won gold in Moscow in 400 and 1500 meter freestyle. On 6 and 7 november he swam in Stockholm in Sweden, he won bronze in 400 meters freestyle and silver in 1500 meter freestyle. He only competed in those two disciplines, and won medals in all competitions. Pál comes from my village Vágur, which has a population of 1400 people. Our island Suðuroy has a population of around 5000 people. The population of the Faroe Islands is around 50.000. There is still no 50 meter pool in the Faroes, but a group of people are working hard to make it happen soon in Pál Joensen's village. Pál Joensen is born in December 1991, so he is only 19 years old and has already very good results from international swimming. Last summer he took silver at the 2010 European Aquatics Championships in 1500 meters freestyle. The winner was the French swimmer Sebastien Roualt. Joensen and Roualt compeded again at the World Cup in Stockholm, and the result was the same as three months earlier: Roualt took gold and Joensen took silver. Pál Joensen became triple Junior European Champion in December 2008 in 400, 800 and 1500 meter freestyle. They all wear necklaces. The women’s body language testifies a position of power. The gestures are very resolute with the hands placed beneath the breasts. The look is stern and the hair very short, they almost look bald headed. Even so they have been connected with the goddess of fertility. It seems like the belief in a strong female god emerges in Scandinavia during the late Bronze Age. A large number of neck rings are sacrificed in the bogs. They are of the same type as those the small figurines wear. Maybe the idea of this goddess came from the East Mediterranean where similar female figurines depicting gods existed during the earlier Bronze Age. Not technically an ancient object in itself, being a modern replica, but it was cast from a mould taken from an original Bronze Age palstave (dating from the middle Bronze Age, 2200–1550 BC). The replica dates from 2001, when I was working in a museum. It was given to me to celebrate the opening of a new bronze age gallery. Exciting times. Lighting: snooted flash (Sony F42AM) camera left high; second flash (Yongnuo) camera right, level with table, bounced off small silver reflector. Bit of a rush job, took a bunch of angles, none of which really showed it off. It has a beautiful pitted surface and patches of patina. The columnar lower third of the work gently rises, then flares out culminating in two slightly asymmetrical, rounded forms. The piece is constructed using Swarovski Crystal Elements Article 6106 Pear Shaped Pendant, Article 4139 Cosmic Rings plus bicones, rondelles and pearls. The seed beads include Toho seed beads, tiny vintage Japanese pearl beads, hammered charlotte seed beads and Czech charlottes. Stitches used herringbone, right angle weave, peyote and freeform. This piece will first visit my Etsy store then off to the Incube8r Gallery in Mosman, Sydney NSW. The beadwoven, pearl embellished necklace strap is Opera length. The pendant can be worn either way as it is 'double sided' ie both sides are just a little bit different from each other.
