This chap (I think he is some sort of small rove beetle - he was about 2mm in length) was completely stuck- struggling to escape without success. We had an unexpected encounter with all of Jpod along with the K7s. It was mid-October, and for some reason, the sun made a triumphant and magnificent return for the weekend. It was very warm, windless, and clear. The perfect weather for spotting whales! Unfortunately, the resident orcas had not been seen for several days in the inland waters, so the chance of finding them was pretty slim. After a fruitless search all through the San Juan and Gulf Islands, we headed home. It was such a gorgeous day that it was hard to be disappointed by the lack of cetaceans though! However, when we were just about home, we got a strange call on the radio; apparently, there was a report of "many blackfish" (a term sometimes used to describe orcas ... I call it fisherman slang) in Trincomali channel. The captain and I were delighted! What luck, we were passing by the mouth of Trincomali channel as we got the call, so we hurried to the last known location of the "blackfish". Trincomali channel is not the most common place to find the resident whales, so we were thinking this was a transient orca sighting. But when the dorsal fins of orcas appeared on the horizon, it became clear these were NOT transients. Suddenly, we had gone from a trip with not even a bald eagle sighting to being surrounded by a very energetic and social group of resident orcas. The water was as still as glass that day, and the sun backlit much of the whale's activity, making for an enchanting scene. All of Jpod was there, rolling around, looking around at the surface, breaching, and taking their time swimming south. The hydrophones were blaring the constant vocalizing the whales were doing, the sounds echoing off the trees around us. This was my very last trip of the season, and it was BY FAR the best of the season. Thanks for the amazing send off Jpod and K7 family! John Masefield I saw a photo of AM Radio's Surface build in Ziki Questi's stream (link) that jumped out at me for a couple of reasons. I have a love/hate relationship with SLart but I've always been a fan of AM Radio's uncomplicated builds and have taken some of my fav pics at them. The other reason was the gorgeous lighting that totally reminded me of a rl photo I took just last week (link). So, to make a long story short, I had to take a look myself. I cut a notch into each "tile" and fired. I glazed pieces together in a way that seemed appealing. Kiln size and the dubious process of gluing by glazing were obvious constraints. The second firing produced stunning surfaces, irregularities caused by particles in the ash were wonderfully highlighted by the glaze. Notice how the glaze is shiny here, matte there, and in places you see an almost chromatographic effect where glaze components have separated. Strangely this project was inspired by the Mayan brick pyramids I saw in Comalcalco in Tobasco State, in Mexico. Those bricks somehow reminded me of Chicago, where I grew up. A possible downside of the process: the "tiles" didn't always position the way I wanted them. The 3-d quality of all of the structures I did tended to melt. My intent was for a larger structure but the more I put the tiles together in groupings past 4-5, the more the overall effect seemed to detract from the surface qualities, which I think are magical. I think the surface qualities are highlighted more by the fishing wire, which accentuates some kind of linearity. I tried this on a couple of pieces and I put some moss I found on a couple of others. It took me about 2 years to accomplish this surface effect. So now I have to play with it more. Also, I want to increase the size. Thanks to my great teachers Sachi, Eamon, and Shaun, and to Janet for patience and taking me to Comalcalco and to Nancy and Bill for the fireplace ash! I'm not sure if the swimmer is really surfacing (as it appears) or just getting smacked by a wave, but it turned out really well with the forground splash and the focused action at the crest of the wave.
