It now overlooks a quiet junction between Trewethern and village of St. Kew. Wayside crosses were set up along a road or path of pilgrimage as a place for the devotions of passers by. Some placed as shrines of reverence, perhaps to a saint who had some connection to the locality - others mark burial sites, or some other event that should be remembered. Building wayside shrines was especially important to ancient religions, where superstition was closely intertwined with spirituality, and were believed to offer protection to travellers from bandits and evil spirits. I'm not sure that ECP whom I first remember meeting in 1950 and of whom I am immensely proud actually called this piece by that title but it was passed to me very many years ago with that moniker. Nachrichten – Fr., 7. Okt 2011 Schon zu Lebzeiten galt Steve Jobs als legendärer IT-Pionier, der mit seinen Ideen und Erfindungen die Welt veränderte – und so nicht nur das Leben seiner Fans. Von seinem eigenen ist – jenseits des Rampenlichts – allerdings weitaus weniger bekannt. Wir haben interessante Fakten zusammengestellt. So gern der ehemalige, am 5. Oktober verstorbene „Apple“-Boss über seine technischen Innovationen sprach – über sein Privatleben ließ er sich nur selten aus. Einige der wenigen Male, wo Steve Jobs das dennoch ganz offen tat, war im Jahr 2005 in seiner mittlerweile berühmten „Stanford“-Rede vor Absolventen der Stanford Universität. Damals gab der mächtige Unternehmer überraschend aufgeschlossen sehr viel Persönliches über sich preis. Offen erzählte er den Studenten von seiner Adoption. 1. Seine Kindheit Jobs berichtete seinem Publikum, dass seine biologische Mutter, eine junge, unverheiratete Collegestudentin, sich entschieden hatte, ihn zur Adoption freizugeben. Jobs kam am 24. Februar 1955 zu Welt und wuchs bei seinen Adoptiveltern Clara und Paul Jobs, ein Paar aus Mountain View, Kalifornien, auf. Sie war Buchhalterin, er Maschinenbauer bei einem Laserunternehmen. Zunächst hatte sich Jobs‘ leibliche Mutter gegen die Adoption geweigert. Ihr Sohn sollte Eltern mit einem Universitätsabschluss bekommen. Schließlich unterzeichnete sie die nötigen Dokumente trotzdem. Mit seiner leiblichen Mutter Joanne Simpson nahm Jobs später Kontakt auf, genauso mit seiner Schwester Mona Simpson. Seinen aus Syrien stammenden, biologischen Vater, Abdulfattah John Jandali, Vize-Präsident eines Casinos in Reno im US-Bundesstaat Nevada, lernte Jobs Zeit seines Lebens wahrscheinlich nicht mehr kennen. 2. Seine Ausbildung Steve Jobs besitzt keinen Universitätsabschluss. 1972 nahm er nach der High School zwar ein Studium am Reed College auf. Das brach er jedoch nach einem Semester ab, um seinen Eltern durch die hohen Studiengebühren finanziell nicht weiter zu Last zu fallen. 3. Seine Atari-Flunkerei 1975 arbeitete Jobs für den Videospiele-Hersteller Atari und half mit dem Spiel „Breakout“ bei der Umsetzung eines der bekanntesten Videogames. Berichten zufolge erhielt er für seine Arbeit 750 US-Dollar und zusätzliche 100 US-Dollar für jeden Chip, den er gegenüber dem ursprünglichen Design einsparen konnte. Später holte er „Apple“-Mitbegründer Steve Wozniak bei der Entwicklung mit ins Boot. Dem gelang eine enorme Reduzierung des Prototyp-Designs, so dass Atari dafür einen 5.000 Dollar-Bonus springen ließ. Allerdings heißt es in Wozniaks Autobiografie, dass Jobs ihm nur die Hälfte der Honorararbeit – 375 Dollar – auszahlte. Die Extra-Gage verheimlichte er angeblich. Mit seiner Frau Laurene Powell war Jobs 20 Jahre lang verheiratet. Das Paar hat zwei Töchter, Eve und Erin, und einen Sohn, Reed. Jobs und Powell sollen sich an der Stanford Universität bei einem von Jobs‘ Vorträgen kennengelernt haben. Jobs, der für seine Hingabe für sein Unternehmen bekannt ist, ließ für das erste Date mit seiner großen Liebe sogar einen Geschäftstermin sausen: „Ich war auf dem Parkplatz mit dem Schlüssel im Auto, und ich dachte: ‚Wenn das meine letzte Nacht auf Erden wäre, würde ich lieber zu dem Geschäftstreffen oder zu dieser Frau gehen?‘ Ich rannte über den Parkplatz, fragte sie, ob sie mit mir essen gehen würde. Sie sagte, ja, wir sind in die Stadt gegangen - seitdem zusammen." Die beiden heirateten 1991 im Ahwahnee Hotel im Yosemite National Park. Die Ehe wurde von Kobin Chino, einem Zen-buddhistischen Mönch, geschlossen. Powell galt als enge Vertraute Jobs‘, die ihn bei der Leitung des „Apple“-Konzerns unterstützte. 5. Seine Schwester Steve Jobs‘ leibliche Schwester Mona Simpson ist eine bekannte Schriftstellerin. Sie ist Autorin des Romans „Überall, nur nicht hier“, der später mit Natalie Portman und Susan Sarandon verfilmt wurde. Jobs und Simpson verband eine tiefe Freundschaft. In einem Interview mit der „New York Times“ sagte Jobs einmal: „Sie ist eine meiner besten Freundinnen. Alle paar Tage rufe ich sie an und rede mit ihr.“ 6. Seine Star-Romanzen Laut der unautorisierten Biografie „The Second Coming of Steve Jobs“ soll Jobs eine kurze Affäre mit der Folk-Sängerin Joan Baez gehabt haben. Baez bestätigte das in einem Interview. Ihre Beziehung zu dem Musiker Bob Dylan, der als einer der Lieblingskünstler Jobs‘ gilt, ist allerdings weitaus mehr bekannt. Auch mit der Schauspielerin Diane Keaton soll Jobs ausgegangen sein. 7. Seine uneheliche Tochter Mit seiner Ex-Freundin aus High School-Zeiten, Chris Ann Brennan, hat Jobs eine Tochter, Lisa Brennan Jobs. Sie kam 1978 zur Welt. Zu jener Zeit nahm „Apple“ in der Technik-Welt gerade Fahrt auf. Das Paar war nie verheiratet. Angeblich hat Jobs zu Beginn die Anerkennung der Vaterschaft verweigert und sogar behauptet, er sei steril. Allerdings bekam er später mit Laurene Powell drei Kinder. Später verbesserte sich Jobs Beziehung zu seiner Ex-Geliebten und er kam für das Studium seiner ersten Tochter an der Harvard Universität auf. Sein alternativer Lebensstil In Interviews deutete Jobs seine frühe Erfahrung mit der psychedelischen Droge LSD an. Über den Microsoft-Gründer Bill Gates sagte er einst: „Ich wünsche ihm das Beste, wirklich. Ich denke aber, dass er und Microsoft ein bisschen engstirnig sind. Er hätte einen weiteren Horizont, wenn er mal LSD genommen hätte oder ein Ashram besucht hätte, als er jünger war.“ Seine LSD-Erfahrung wolle er auf keinen Fall missen, soll Jobs einst erklärt haben. Sie zähle zu den „zwei oder drei wichtigsten Dingen, die ich je in meinem Leben gemacht habe.“ Jobs selbst deutete an, dass sie möglicherweise zu seiner „Think different“-Attitüde beitrug, die mitunter den großen Erfolg des „Apple“-Konzerns ausmachte. Während einer Reise nach Indien, bei der Jobs ein Ashram besuchte, beschäftigte er sich mit dem Zen-Buddhismus und wurde ein Anhänger dieser Lehre. Jobs soll zudem Pescetarier gewesen sein, das heißt, er verzichtete auf Fleisch, nicht jedoch auf Fisch. Seine Krebskrankheit versuchte er angeblich zunächst mit alternativen Heilmethoden und speziellen Diäten zu bekämpfen. 2004 unterzog er sich dann einer Operation. 9. Sein Vermögen Als Vorstandsvorsitzender von „Apple“ erhielt Jobs eine Zeitlang ein Jahresgehalt von lediglich einem Dollar. Allerdings besaß er Anfang 2001 5,5 Millionen „Apple“-Anteile. Nach seinem Tod wurde der Wert einer „Apple“-Aktie auf etwa 377,64 Dollar geschätzt – ein Wachstum um das 43-Fache in den vergangenen zehn Jahren. Laut dem US-Wirtschaftsmagazin „Forbes“ belief sich sein Vermögen im Jahr 2011 auf 8,3 Milliarden Dollar (etwa 6,2 Milliarden Euro). Unter den reichsten Personen der Welt landete er damit auf Platz 110. Wie sein Erbe aufgeteilt werden wird, ist noch nicht bekannt. This was very complex to shoot. I had to work quick; I wanted to catch the moon while it was still low on the horizon and keep the exposure short, so the moon would still appear circular and leave the ambient light in the scene very dark. The truck was lit with a red LED flashlight from the front and a purple gelled strobe from the rear, as well as a purple strobe pop in the interior. The chrome logo was lit with a snooted LED flashlight, from a very shallow angle to make that elliptical shape . . . all done in a 51 second exposure. It took at least 10 tries to get it right. I'm not gonna try to paraphrase what happened to Job. Rather, I'll attempt to communicate the suckiness of his story through an exploration of a common curse word. Job is the S**t There is curse work in the english language that starts with an "s" and ends with a "t." This curse word is in a few common phrases like: 1. When she finds out, the s**t is gonna hit the fan. 2. That dude got the s**t kicked out of him. 3. Uh oh, she is in some deep s**t. In those phrases, "s**t" is a negative thing. If you want to insult someone, express displeasure or describe a bad situation, "s**t" is your go-to word. Here it is in a nutshell. The word "s**t" would feel insulted if someone called it "Job." S**t, Job. You're old One interesting thing about Job.... Even though it's in the middle of the Bible, most scholars say that is actually the oldest book. That means that almost all the people we've read about up to this point knew the story of Job. While I can't be positive about this next part (but you know I love to make wild speculations about the Bible), I'd bet that in the ancient Jewish culture they used "Job" in the same way we use "s**t." Three speculative examples: 1. You guys sold your brother into slavery and then lied and told your dad that an animal killed him? If your dad ever finds out, the Job is gonna hit the fan! 2. Dang, David! You kicked the Job out of Goliath! 3. Noah got drunk and did what?! He is in some deep Job. I hope you're not expecting insight from me Job is a dense and complicated book that raises a ton of questions about what God is like. My spiritual gift is sarcasm, not Biblical exegesis, so if you want to know more about Job, my pastor wrote a pretty good piece about it that I'd encourage you to check out. So the only Japanese singer's photos here are of Junna Morishita. I asked my boss if it was OK to have so many bunnies there. She said sure. Then another manager told my boss that she was worried about what clients might think. So my boss reluctantly told me I needed to take home some of the bunnies. The collage displays some of the historical symbols (microprocessors and pulldown menus) that was unique for the Mac back in the 1980s. My apologies for not having a sharper and clearer picture. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MacPaint By Ben Bonaccio I’m going to date myself here: I wasn’t around for the release of MacPaint in 1984. While I didn’t get to use the revolutionary UI based drawing software until I arrived on the scene in ’88, it still had a profound impact on my interest in using the computer as a creative and artistic medium. For those who were around for the 1984 release which coincided with that of the original Macintosh, MacPaint’s impression was likely even greater. As the precursor to almost all modern imaging software, MacPaint introduced tools such as the “lasso” and “the paint bucket” (which I called “the paint leaker” as a kid). The “marching ants” selection boxes commonly seen in Adobe software also got their start with MacPaint. Though it may seem like second nature to us today, Apple’s drawing software was the first to let users generate images by interacting with a GUI as opposed to working with code behind the scenes. Realizing MacPaint’s technical and historical significance, Apple donated the original source code to the Computer History Museum a few days ago (July 2010). The source is 5,822 lines of Apple Pascal and 3,583 lines of 68000 assembly. In 1976 Mr. Wayne, who worked at Atari with Steve Jobs, helped found Apple Computers. He drew the first Apple logo, wrote the original partnership agreement, and wrote the Apple I manual. For his assistance, he was awarded a 10% stake in the company. Less than two weeks later, he sold his share back to Jobs and Steve Wozniak for $800 as he was worried that the new company would go into debt and he had assets that creditors could potentially seize. This week (Aug 2012), Apple became the most valuable company of all time (not adjusting for inflation because if you do Microsoft is still the winner and no one wants that) hitting a total market capitalization of around 624 billion dollars. This would make Wayne’s share 62.4 billion dollars, which is 78 million times as much as he was paid for it. For all of you out there who rue not buying Apple stock when it was under $10, take some comfort in the fact that you only lost out on multiplying your investment 100 times or so.
