So first, not to repeat the mistake from the previous post, the noted light in the little cave opening on the right side of the waterfall is a flame that gives this waterfall its name. An always escaping natural gas keeps the flame burning. This waterfall gets water all year long, even though it can be a trickle in summer. The low flow waterfalls are my favorite though. Something special about those compared to the rumbling waters of the likes of Niagara Falls. This view from the right side is my favorite, it shows the waterfall nicely, including a small portion of the upper portion, and the flame is very nicely visible here too. And on this visit, I wanted to grab some horizontal compositions since my past photos were vertical for the most part. I know, back to waterfalls rather quickly. My favorite repeat location.that I have not visited this year yet and had to fix it. This was early in the morning, with clouds, resulting in diffused light evenly illuminating the whole scene. Yet again was I disgusted with human race. A few days back at Emery Falls I found empty beer cans all over. Today here, there were broken beer bottles and glass right under the waterfall. What a shame! [11/7/12] Sorry for not doing it right away, but I've added a note explaining the uniqueness of this waterfall and also copied that below: The light in the small cave on the right is what gives this waterfall its name - a flame! It is about 900 to 1,500 light-years away. The bright star Alnitak (ζ Ori), the easternmost star in the Belt of Orion, shines energetic ultraviolet light into the Flame and this knocks electrons away from the great clouds of hydrogen gas that reside there. Much of the glow results when the electrons and ionized hydrogen recombine. Additional dark gas and dust lies in front of the bright part of the nebula and this is what causes the dark network that appears in the center of the glowing gas. The Flame Nebula is part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a star-forming region that includes the famous Horsehead Nebula. It was an amazing day, it came to Earlswood at 9.15 this morning. I expected a couple of hundred of people to turn up but there was thousands (see the picture below to get a little idea of how many). The theme was "Fire". I didn't really have much time to work on this all that much, as I had finals (which I passed!), and that I'm going on vacation, so I'll be away from my parts. Thankfully I'm able to have access to the internet here, so I just needed to take and edit some pictures and then upload them all to brickshelf. The idea was to make a being that could control fire, so I made this. The fire on it's left hand was not intentionally made to look like a whip/sword, it just happened to look so, and I decided to keep it. The right hand is some kind of flame gun, I guess. I tried to make the face look a tad gas mask-esque, so it would play along with the fire theme. Also, yes, I know the eyes are adorable. Apologies for some re-used designs, rushing leaves no time for much originality =P But the torso design is still completely different that the ones on Pixi Droid and Hunter. They just all look similar due to using the HF shoulder pads with the hockey torso piece. It's a dark nebula seen due to being back-lit by hydrogen gas that is glowing red. The bright star is the left-most star in Orion's belt. The obvious nebula on the left is the Flame nebula. The Horsehead Nebula is more obvious in the larger view - click on it. I shot 75x 30 second exposures at ISO1600, with a Canon T1i DSLR on a 190mm Maksutov Newtonian telescope. I tossed out the worst 25 exposures leaving 50. I stacked it in Deepsky Stacker with a master dark frame. Then since I didn't use flat frames, vignetting was levelled out in Pixinsight. After stretching it back in DSS, the dark structure of the nebulae was enhanced, and the image sharpened using Pixinsight 1.7. It's pretty crude, and over processed to try and bring out the faint Horsehead nebula, but I'm happy that I could detect it with a stack of 30 second exposures. It's not visible in the individual raw exposures, even the Flame nebula is just a faint smudge before stacking. The red glow around the horsehead nebula is Hydrogen Alpha emissions, a shade of red that is mostly filtered out by stock DSLR cameras, I'll need longer exposures to make up for this. That green streak isn't an airplane and I'm pretty certain that it isn't a simple digital artifact (cosmic ray striking the camera sensor?). The only other possibilities I can think of are either a meteor or a flare from an earth orbiting satellite. My guess would be that it is a meteor with the green color being caused by the nickel-metal content in the meteor itself (apparently that is the color you get with meteors that have a high nickel content). [UPDATE] Yes, this is a meteor. In fact, it is a member of the Orionid Meteor Shower that peaked on Oct 21/22 of this year. If you trace the path back up toward the top of the frame then you will eventually arrive at the so-called radiant point of the Orionids. Also, the Orionid meteors are known for their green color. The Orionids are associated with Halley's Comet, so you're seeing a piece of this famous comet being vaporized in our atmosphere. [/UPDATE] The green tint of this object was vividly apparent in the raw, unprocessed image, but I have no way of knowing whether the color was completely natural or whether it was caused by the capture technique or some other unknown factor. The meteor is best seen in the Flickr light box (press the "L" key to toggle the light box, or better yet click on the "View all sizes" menu item to see the image at its largest size). This two-minute-long, single-frame exposure also recorded the Flame Nebula, a faint outline of the Horsehead Nebula, the reflection nebula M78, and the Running Man Nebula (bottom edge center). Captured on October 22, 2011 at 2:01AM PDT from a moderately dark-sky location using a Nikon D5100 DSLR (ISO 3200, 2 minute exposure) and an AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8D lens set to aperture f/2.8. Introducing the next Eurorack module from Flame, the Tame Machine. The module looks like a lot of fun. In addition to being a tap tempo clock source and clock ("beat") divider, the module will act as a "playable" quantizer via the colored pushbuttons at the top. When not in Quantizer mode, however, they can be used as a mini keyboard for sending note data. The Tame Machine also has another fun feature- it is possible to record a melody from the mini keyboard and play this in a loop via the record function. The original fire was taken to Oklahoma when the Cherokee Nation was removed west over the infamous "Trail of Tears". In May 1951, four Eastern band of Cherokee Tribal leaders from the Qualla Boundary, North Carolina, retraced that trail of heartbreak and brought live coals from the Oklahoma fire. The Horsehead nebula is actually a dark nebula (Barnard 33) against the bright backdrop of nebula IC 434. Visually, the Flame is an easy target in a moderate aperture telescope; the Horsehead is very difficult and requires an H-Beta filter and very dark skies. The H-alpha for this shot is here. The Horsehead nebula is actually a dark nebula (Barnard 33) against the bright backdrop of nebula IC 434. The bright star between the Flame and the Horsehead is Alnitak, the leftmost star in Orion's belt. North is to the left in this image. Visually, the Flame is an easy target in a moderate aperture telescope; the Horsehead is very difficult and requires an H-Beta filter and very dark skies.
