The rover worked at this location from Sol 56 (Oct. 2, 2012) to Sol 100 (Nov. 16, 2012). The drift consists of sand trapped on the downwind side of a group of dark cobbles the team named Rocknest. This mosaic of 55 images from the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) shows the first four of five places from which the rover's scoop obtained sand to clean the sample handling and processing system. The scooped material was ultimately delivered to the Chemistry and Mineralogy Experiment (CheMin) and the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) laboratory instruments housed inside the rover's body. The annotated version of this figure shows the location of a scoop taken at a later date -- the fifth and final scoop, and the only one that provided grains delivered to SAM. Before scooping, the rover team put an approximately 20-inch-wide (about 50- centimeter-wide) wheel print on the Rocknest wind drift. This allowed MAHLI and the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) to determine whether the drift really consisted of sand with small enough sizes to clean the Collection and Handling for In-Situ Martian Rock Analysis (CHIMRA) instrument and be delivered to CheMin and SAM. The drift material at the center of the wheel print, named "Portage" by the rover team, was examined by the APXS. The rover's robotic arm is not visible in the mosaic because the MAHLI that took this mosaic is on the turret at the end of the arm. Wrist motions and turret rotations on the arm allowed MAHLI to acquire the mosaic's 55 images. An earlier version of the Sol 84 self-portrait was released Nov. 1, 2012 (see PIA16239). A pretty spectacular feat and one that was even captured by an orbiting satellite! Despite the NASA shuttle missions finishing there’s still some great exploring going on and I’m always inspired to see the next step in our quest to learn more about our neighbouring planets. I went searching for some decent ‘curiosity’ quotes and found this gem by Anatole France a Nobel Prize winner in literature. I love it’s simple and clear messaging and I can’t wait to hear about what the latest rover discovers. Events like the recent successful landing of NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars are historic triumphs for both science and mankind, representing our species' finest attributes of an enduring spirit for exploration and a great, soaring passion for knowledge. I've been hooked by all the developments from Curiosity ever since watching this video about the "Seven Minutes of Terror", where the rover loses communication with its operators during atmospheric entry and must complete a flawless automated landing sequence, following meticulously coded software commands and a breathtaking array of technical wizardry. Personally speaking, the most compelling images from the surface of Mars are not ones which look "alien", as such, but the views which portray landscapes familiar to what we see here on Earth. When you look at the rover panoramas and find scenes akin to arid rocky regions of our own planet, it seems to underscore our place in the cosmos and reify these distant words which have been hitherto seen only as ethereal specks of light through the lenses of telescopes. During development and pre-launch testing, NASA's interplanetary vehicles are often put through their paces in rocky desert areas such as Nevada, Arizona and Chile, as the geology of these regions matches the sort of extraterrestrial terrain the robot will be encountering on its far-flung travels. I looked into my archives and found a photograph of the Arizona desert (seen here on the left hand side, taken when approaching the New Mexico border) which was not unlike some of the pictures that Curiosity has been sending back from its new home in Gale Crater. The right half of this composite is a genuine shot from the surface of Mars which the rover captured a couple of weeks ago on August 8th. I have montaged NASA's CGI rendering of the initial parachute deceleration and rocket-powered descent stage in order to better illustrate the landing. Thanks also go to Canadian Astronomy for their shot of Curiosity's launch, taken whilst the vehicle escaped orbit by riding 285,000 pounds of of thrust aboard an Atlas 5 rocket in November 2011. Scientists are reportedly interested by the mountainous walls of the ancient impact crater in which Curiosity now resides. Here, a diverse network of valleys is believed to have formed by water erosion that once cascaded down into Gale Crater from the surrounding plateau. This is the first view that we have ever have seen of a fluvial system - one relating to a river or stream - from the surface of Mars. Known and studied since the 1970s Viking missions, these geological patterns date from a period in Martian history when water flowed freely across the surface. The very same mechanism of fluvial action can be observed in my Arizona photograph. Our world is inconceivably different to its neighbours in many ways (here most notably in the abundance of animal and plant life) but we are all subject to the universal laws of physics which carve and texture the surfaces of planets. These foreign lands, in their magnificent desolation, are now islands on which we make our stand amid the great enveloping cosmic dark. Earthbound evolution spanning hundreds of millions of years has left mankind ill-equipped to deal with the harsh conditions of space. The challenge of sending humans across astronomical distances is immense; almost insurmountable, but the story of space is one of triumph over adversity. JFK famously chose to lead his people to the moon "not because it is easy, but because it is hard." Perhaps, someday, human footsteps will eventually follow in the chevron tyre tracks of our latest robotic pioneers like Curiosity, Spirit, and Opportunity to experience the Red Planet first hand. ****************************** Eagle-eyed readers may spot occasional phrases from the works of Carl Sagan in some of my science writing. I took him there in a harness. He would explore away from me for a while, but whenever I called his name, he'd turn and run to me and hug my leg as high up as he could reach. What a precious boy! We are going to try resorting to an old-school immune booster for Curiosity: ImmunoRegulin. I just ordered it on-line. My vet hasn't used it in about ten years. It's worth a try. I'll be giving him shots at least once per week (twice per week for the first one to two weeks). If it works, after three months we can go down to monthly injections. I truly would love for the immune boost to work. That mixed with prayer. . . see what happens. At this point Curiosity isn't well enough to advertise for adoption (although I think the vet techs would take him home if they had room. . . ). Maybe one day this adorable boy will be able to find a forever home. . . he is welcome in our home till that day comes. . . He finished his week of Clavamox, and I put him on amoxicillin. Unfortunately, his nasal discharge is worsening each day. In humans, we have to treat sinus infections for a minimum of 10 to 14 days. Apparently his secondary infection is resistant to straight amoxicillin. This past Thursday (when he was doing well and looked like he'd just have a minimal clear discharge), I spent a couple of hours cleaning all the discharge flung throughout the bathroom, so it's a little discouraging seeing it back from that standpoint as well. The vet's office is closed right now, but I'll try to get him in to be seen tomorrow. I guess I'll shoot for at least a two-week supply of Clavamox when we talk. Poor Curiosity. He's such a cheery boy. I really want him to be healthy. His nasal discharge has greatly slowed. I truly believe the secondary bacterial infection is under control. I'm not convinced it is gone, but Merck Veterniary Manual recommends antibiotics for 3-6 weeks. Curiosity still has a clear nasal discharge consistent with an underlying chronic viral infection. I'm hoping that lysine will be as effective for him as it was at controlling Godiva's symptoms. Admittedly, the medicines need to be bolstered by prayer. God knows what this boy is fighting and what the future holds. I'd love for him to be able to be out and about in the house and ultimately find his own home. For now, he continues to live in the basement bathroom. His health has greatly improved in that room, but I am wanting his world to be expanded. I do have in the back of my head that young, black cat with only one open eye. . . Curiosity deserves company, and I am not yet comfortable mixing my other cats with him. Another cat, with a chronic infection, from the same neighborhood (being fed at a neighboring farm) would be a reasonable choice for a roommate. . . hmmmmmmm. I was able to sneak away from the office briefly to talk with the vet, too. I have two different possible antibiotics to use. One would be easier on his gut, but I'm not sure it's as effective (at least it isn't in humans). The other will likely give him diarrhea, and I don't like the thought of his poor belly suffering for two weeks. Hmmmm. . . I really just want this boy healthy. Everyone was amazed at what a lover he is. My friend (who had never ever met him) showed up in his bathroom and was welcomed enthusiastically. He willingly went into the carrier for her. I tell you, this Curiosity is a treasure. . . he loves everyone and anyone, whatever the species. He's a gem! Nicknamed "Curiosity," the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is as big as a Volkswagon and has the latest equipment to study the red planet, where it is scheduled to land in August, 2012. This 2008 photo from the huge clean room at Jet Propulsion Laboratory shows assembly of the rover by engineers in white suits. The scheduled 2009 launch was unfortunately scrubbed due to lack of adequate time for testing, leading to a 2.5 year delay (because launch windows only come about every 2-3 years). MSL is a risky mission where hundreds of things have to go right, both at launch and especially at landing, which is using an untested new method to lower the rover from a hovering descent engine.
