Heard County High School Heard County High School : UPCOMING SENIORS: AP LITERATURE SUMMER READING
(DUE DECEMBER 19th)
AP Literature Summer Reading: Due December 19, 2013
Overview
Incoming AP Literature students are required to read several books over the summer in preparation for the course and subsequent AP exam. One portion of the AP exam, the Free Response essay, demands that students have a wide range of challenging literary words on which they can draw when writing that essay. The goal of this summer’s reading, however, is not to prepare you for the exam but to initiate you into the conversation about ideas through books by both contemporary and classic authors.
AP Literature IS a college class; it is not simply preparation for college. If you are looking for ways around this reading assignment, you should not enroll in this class.
If you have any questions or concerns over the summer about your reading assignment, please contact Mrs. Perry at perry819@icloud.com.
Part I (Due to Mrs. Perry by December 19, 2013): Every student will read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster. Foster’s book will help you to understand the novel better.
1. Before you read Frankenstein: Read Chapter 21 from Foster’s book paying close attention to what he says about Frankenstein.
2. After you read Frankenstein: Apply the following chapters from Foster’s book to Frankenstein.
• Chapter 1—“Every Trip is a Quest”
• Chapter 7—“…or The Bible”
• Chapter 9—“It’s Greek to Me” (think Prometheus)
• Chapter 10—“It’s More Than Just Rain or Snow”
• Chapter 11—“…More Than It’s Gonna Hurt You; Concerning Violence”
• Chapter 12—“Is That a Symbol?”
• Chapter 19—“Geography Matters…”
• Chapter 20—“…So Does Season”
• Chapter 25—“Don’t Read With Your Eyes”

oceans and fire oceans and fire : quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Maxwell Perkins, in 1940 the year that he died at 44.

"I wish I was in print. It would be odd a year or so from now when Scottie" (his daughter) “assures her friends I was an author and finds that no book is procurable. Will the $0.25 press keep Gatsby in the public eye, or is the book unpopular? Has it had its chance? But to die so completely and unjustly after having given so much. Even now, there is little published in American fiction that doesn't slightly bear my stamp. In a small way, I was an original." *

* Perkins, Maxwell Evarts. The Sons of Maxwell Perkins: Letters of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe, and their editor, ed. Matthew Joseph Bruccoli. Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, 2004: 303.

It is hard to read this and not think of Philip Roth's admonition to a young writer that he ought not undertake the profession of novelist.

Perhaps the way the author writer should think of Roth's dissuasion with comfort is, "Are you willing to die like F. Scott Fitzgerald?" Maybe what Roth was trying to say (rather than accusing him of poisoning the well of which he has amply partaken) is the story of F. Scott Fitzgerald is more typical than becoming the much esteemed in his lifetime Philip Roth. It's not to say don't bother writing your Great Gatsby, but that the way is and has always been quite hard...

National Martini Day

Today is National Martini Day! Although the exact origin of the martini is unknown, this iconic drink has earned a permanent place in the pantheon of classic cocktails. The first printed recipe for a “Martinez” cocktail appeared in a bartending manual published in San Francisco in 1887. However, historians disagree over whether the beverage actually originated on the West Coast. In 1911, a New York City bartender named Martini di Arma di Taggia began serving a cocktail made with gin, vermouth, orange bitters, and an olive garnish. The martini gained widespread popularity among Manhattan socialites, and has been associated with New York ever since.

Today, 50% of all cocktails are served in a martini glass. Some of the most famous (historical and fictional) martini lovers include: John D. Rockefeller, Humphrey Bogart, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Ernest Hemingway, and James Bond.

To celebrate National Martini Day, enjoy a refreshing martini in the company of friends. Mix up the classic or try this lemon basil martini recipe. Cheers to that!
