Do Share.     "This is the truth" The killers are mentally ill (not an excuse, a fact). The hysteria in the media is making me feel sick. They clearly do not give a f*&^ about the feelings and dignity of the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life needlessly as did Stephen Lawrence not so very far away. They just want to sell papers and advertising and fear.

Rebecca Lam Rebecca Lam : Heroes or just doing their jobs? Teachers save lives during Okla. tornado     I really do hope people realize, after Columbine, Newtown, and tragedies like this --finally realize the extra call on teachers as public servants and they really shouldn't be thrown around in politics and press the way they are, or have their salaries up for public discussion. They go beyond what is required for any high-paid business professional. Think policeman, soldier, hero. Be nice to teachers.

Jimmy Mckinnon Jimmy Mckinnon : I have to keep this going because I have said it before. People think teachers are in it for the money. Let me tell you this, they are not. They dont get paid near enough for what they do. There are some that are just collecting a paycheck but 99% are doing it because they love it. They not only teach our kids but they put them selves in harms way to protect our children. Don't believe me look at Columbine, Sandy Hook and Moore Oklahoma as examples. Those teachers threw them selves in harms way to protect the kids and some lost their lives doing it. Ive said it before and I'll say it again. My wife is one of those underpaid teachers who doesnt show up for a paycheck, she actually TEACHES. She has a masters in special ed and when she works with SPED kids she doesnt babysit she TEACHES them what they can learn. God forbid a tragedy ever took place in her school but if it did I would be proud to know that she is willing to lay down her own life to protect those kids. So next time you have the urge to bash teachers in general, instead thank them cause a teacher might just one day save your childs life.

Marissa Brown Marissa Brown : Bullying is not a joke. It breaks my heart that there are people who think it's funny that kids have been pushed to the limit to kill themselves as wellas other kids and teachers. It's not funny. Grow up. My life and viewpoint has changed so much these past three days working on the anti bullying campaign and hearing others stories.

To those of you who think bullying is a joke, it's not. You're in high school. It's times to grow up some. For a teenager, a kid my age, to be picked on so much that they feel like the only thing that will stop it is to kill themselves or others, is beyond ridiculous.
Thevideo in the assembly today about Columbine was real. That really did happen. And it's happened at other schools as well. It wasn't funny and to know that the people I see and associate with everyday thought it was, breaks my heart so much. Have some respect for the families, the friends, the students, and the teachers who had to go through that. Honestly.

These videos and pictures ARE being put on the news. These fuckers wanted a level of notoriety and fame, which is why they intentionally tried to get themselves into videos and pictures, and the news companies have given them exactly what they wanted.

Ryan Gavin Ryan Gavin : Welcome to the wild freaking west. Last night, an FBI agent shot and killed a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing investigation in Florida, while he was being questioned under FBI supervision. The agent claims that Ibragim Todashev came at him with a knife, so he had to shoot and kill him in self defense. This stuff is getting really disturbing - there are more and more reports in the news of police using excessive deadly force - and it's completely unacceptable. Last week, the California highway patrol beat a man almost to death for requesting he be allowed a moment to read the ticket they were issuing him before he signed it. It's scary to think that we're eight times more likely to be murdered by a police officer than a terrorist in this country.

Pam Luttrell Pam Luttrell : Vigil sitting from 10 tonight until 7 tomorrow morning.

Garden is in full-force: Siberian irises are beautiful combos of shades of purple with long, grass-like foliage that moves with the slightest breeze. The semi-double blood-red peonies are still going and have been joined by a single of bright coral with a tangle of gold threads at the center. The rue is mass of club-shaped blue-green leaves and the bronze fennel is a cloud of purple bronze feathers.

The white rugosa has several blooms, lots of buds and seems the most vigorous of the group. A bright, medium pink has joined in, albeit more modestly. The hybrid lilac bush is blooming, but isn't yet fully loaded. One clematis started blooming yesterday and a pretty pink and cream long-spurred columbine has self-seeded from last year; I should have a nice group next year. The species digitalis foliage is rich-green and almost 18" tall and will flower in 3 weeks, or so.

Tall, species early-blooming asters are scattered everywhere and we let them go to seed because the finches love them. Mayapples are carpeting the forest floor and crowding the garden beds a bit, but I like them so much I rarely remove them; I just plant annuals between and around them. The big poke is back from last year. I weeded all but one out. If handled carefully, a number of medicines can be made from this plant, so I left one to get large and vigorous and it looks as though it's going to do just that. What a sap-rising feeling in the air!

Reporting Unlimited Reporting Unlimited : Palestinian refugees are not at your service     Required Reading: How Not To Do It

Here is a chilling fixer's eye view of young Harvard types interviewing Palestinians. Rule one: However important we think our job might be, we are eternally intruding on other people's complex and often painful lives, bringing them nothing in return. Like a character in this piece, I used to try telling refugees and disaster victims that my stories would alert the world and bring them help. Yeah, right. They knew better even if I didn't.

I can still see the face of an 8-year-old kid as I interviewed his father at a grim Gaza refugee camp in 1981. He couldn't follow what I was saying, but his look was dead clear: "I don't know what my old man is telling you, but if you think I'm going to put up with the shit he has for all his life..."

For this sort of interview, as with most, it is wise to keep in mind Ed Cody's (he is finally retiring from the Washington Post, as it fades away from former grandeur) sage advice:
"Shut the fuck up and listen."

Kicking Ass for the Middle Class Kicking Ass for the Middle Class : To follow up on TScanlan's query (what do you all think of Michael Moore) -- I have to share the story of when I almost got into a fist fight (with a man, no less -- all 105 lbs of me). ;)

My husband and I found ourselves at a fancy theater in Orange County, California (bastion of the 1%). A son asked his father who "that man" was on the poster for Sicko.

His father: "He's the sicko. Can't you tell? Look how fat and sloppy he is."

With all the grace of an angry rhinoceros, I shoved my way into their conversation: "He's an American hero."

And the look I gave the father told him he'd better think twice about responding because I was willing to throw down.

Sicko was a beautiful & perfect rebuttal to the truly evil canard about "death panels".

Bowling for Columbine was prescient -- years before Newtown, truer now than ever.

And Roger & Me helped shape who I am as a liberal.

Yep. I love that man. A modern-day Mark Twain, telling the truth, standing up for the powerless, and even finding some laughs.

You wanna call me the pejorative label, "fan-girl"? Good. I wear it with pride.
