Jim'll Paint It : Back to basics challenge

For this week and this week only I am imposing a rule on the painting requests. The challenge is to come up with a request using no more than 5 words. It has been said that the suggestions are becoming almost formulaic in their randomness and I can't help but agree. With any luck this challenge will bring Jim'll Paint It back to basics so that when a complicated one does come along it stands out from the crowd. It also means I'll get loads more pictures done and make lots more people happy.

Gymnastics Canada : Ottawa gymnast on target for second straight national title at Canadian Championships

OTTAWA -- Ottawa gymnast Sam Zakutney got off to a strong start in his bid for a second straight national title on Wednesday, topping the field in the Tyro age group on the first day of competition at the Canadian championships.

Zakutney, 15, finished in the top three on all six apparatus, including a first in the floor exercise, for a total score of 85.050 points.

Ryan Oehrlein of Georgetown, Ont., was second all around with 82.750 points followed by Anthony Tawfik of Mississauga, Ont., who placed third at 82.450.

In the men’s junior competition, Matthew Halickman of Montreal edged Justin Karstadt of Toronto for top spot with Aaron Mah of Vancouver ranked third.

Mah was one of just two gymnasts in the competition to place first in more than one event, winning parallel bars and finishing in a tie for top spot on high bar.

Competitors in both Tyro and Junior compete again on Friday to determine all around and individual event medal winners.

In other events on Wednesday, Meixi Semple of Oshawa placed first in the women’s national novice qualification and Megan Roberts of Toronto topped the field in the novice high performance category. Finals are set for Friday.

Competition continues on Thursday with the women’s senior and junior all around events and trampoline and tumbling.

Drew Downer : On cardio machine at gym with TV monitor, can't change channel, can't turn off ESPN 2 (broken, I tried). On comes Pro Gymnastics Challenge - Intro prominently features male gymnast (all men shirtless) with a tattoo, so you know this is a wild bunch. The women apparently have been allowed to eat since they all weigh over 97 pounds and their hair isn't falling out. Followed by 'competition' with lots of 'bro' shakes and fist pumping in front of paid attendance of 43 people including family members. Uniforms look like high school gym class gear...this is my penance.

Innerjewell Athletics : Innerjewell Athletics: Cinderella In my opinion 'fit' has now become the 'skinny'. I wrote a blog this past week about how my journey to poor self image began. I think back to that time and being 'skinny' was all the rage. Eating issues are never just about food, but many other factors. Now with 'fit' becoming our new skinny, it is important that for those of us who love the fit lifestyle to continue the conversations on what really is 'eating us'. I speak a lot about the competition experience, but for me and many others out there, the competition 'image' was only one aspect and trigger to perpetuating my low self image and eating issues.
As coaches we must be very aware and clear with our clients about this process. I think back to when I was a gymnast and eating disorders were not discussed. They were happening but it wasn't until a gymnast died from it that the topic really started to be discussed.
For me, my passion as a coach and MOM is to continue this movement and to continue these conversations in an industry that is amazing, yet so destructive to many that are 'seeking' that new 'fit'.
We always want to encourage health and self care. But we must be very clear on drawing lines in the sand on the difference between a healthy self image and healthy pursuit of fitness, and/or feeding into an already disordered self concept.
There was a time when I was so ashamed of myself. Ashamed of where my mind went. As I'm speaking more and more with women that read my posts or blogs, it is apparent that these issues are becoming epidemic in our new pursuit of 'fit' over 'skinny'.
Fad diets, empty promises, and emptiness... all things that never really reach our 'hearts'.

Allen Diaz : Ok, so last week I got on the scale and weighed 203 pounds. Which is not to bad for my size. But I want to weigh around 185. So I decided to change my food intake. I love vegetables so I changed my breankfast and lunch to consist of fruit, vegetables and nuts. For dinner I ate the regular meal at the family dinner table, including desert. I also drank plenty of water. Without exercise or change in my normal routine I lost 13 pounds in less than two weeks. I was hoping for a pound a week.
