Renee Bramlett Shorter : Quite an experience tonight! Earlier today as I was leaving, there were 2 blonde guys at the end of my driveway (thought they were meter readers). One signaled for me to roll down my window and he introduced himself as an exchange student from Europe who was talking with people about education and teachers. He told me who the teachers were in my neighborhood. When I returned around 6 there was a Gray 4door Fiat down from my house and I saw the same two guys get in it. I called the non emergency number for the Sumter Police, explained the situation and they sent officers to look in the neighborhood. Those blonde guys came back at 8:00 and then again at 9:00. I wouldn't answer the door and they kept banging on the door and window! Called 911 and received 2 officers who said they PD had numerous calls. Said call police if they come back and SPREAD the word. Anyone going door to door must have a peddler's license from the City of Sumter... has photo, thumbprint, name, company name and expiration date. If they don't have this, they are peddling illegally and you can call the police. Interested to find out how these guys knew teachers in the neighborhood....

J Thomas D Gonder : We didn't have roadside garbage collection in Cayuga in the 1970s. It really didn't seem to be too much of an issue anyway - there was a dump outside of town, how many miles, I couldn't tell you, but that's where it had to go. Pretty simple.
And simple it was, but probably for me, as a kid, one of those really cool moments when your Dad says, okay Tommy, let's go.
We'd barrel on down the road, listening to 8-track tapes, mostly Paul Simon and Billy Joel. The dump was a clearing in a forest down a couple of dirt roads off the highway. I remember being disgusted with it and fascinated by it at the same time, in an almost kind of surreal way. I climbed it all as if it were sand dunes, not finding them attractive, but just momentarily amusing and novel.
The ride home was always the best part, and I never wanted it to end. I think sometimes Dad didn't either, he seemed to really love me and spending time with me. It would be dark by then (summer) and there was a slightly elevated pull-off spot at the edge of the highway. We had a ritual. And Dad would turn off the car, flip the key back though so that we still had the radio and shit, and we'd lie on the hood of the car.
We stared at the sky and he taught me all of the constellations. I was astonished by what he knew, and believed what he shared with me. It was a magical time that no amount of cruddy experiences in life could ever erase.
On the way home I'd beg him for Gino Vannelli, Shaun Cassidy, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, and Genesis.....even Rachmaninov. Yes. I had Rachmaninov on 8-track tapes. And probably Virgil Fox too....

Pryoranimal League : PAL has not posted a weekly update since May 17. Here is what's been happening: Paws in the Park was a big success. We had Lab Rescue, Chouteau Pound Pals and Piper’s Pit Bull Rescue present along with Zoo Safari, a ceramics booth, a face painting booth, our flea/tick dip tank, Dr. Sarah Gordon’s mobile clinic, and good BBQ. Hope I didn’t forget anyone.
We have taken in 11 kittens, 2 mastiff pups, a bird dog, a pug mix, 2 terrier mixes, a basset, an English bulldog surrendered by its owner, 7 cocker spaniels, and a litter of 5 puppies dumped in the country. The good part of this story is all of these dogs and 6 kitttens have already gone to other rescues through 3 transports to Joplin and one transport to Hays, Kansas.
We still have a rottie mix pup and a black lab mix that came in, plus the 2 pups with the mange are still with us while they grow their hair back.
We assisted Mayes County Sheriff’s Office with 8 puppies someone had been throwing out a car window and helped them with a black lab needing a home. All of these have gone on to rescues or been adopted.
Another spay/neuter clinic was held June 8 with 46 animals vetted. There was a good turnout of volunteers and everything went as planned. Our next clinic will be October 12. Signups will again be at Gibbs Plumbing if you know someone needing to get their pet signed up.
Be sure to keep water out for your pets during the hot summer months and try to stay cool yourself.
