1079mixfm : A Man Who Was Wrongly Imprisoned for 24 Years Gets a $6 Million Settlement . . . And Now His Ex-Wife is Suing and Says She Deserves Some of It

In 1983, Steven Phillips of Dallas, Texas was wrongly convicted of several rapes. He spent the next 24 years in prison until DNA evidence proved he was innocent. In 2009, he got a settlement worth about $6 MILLION from the state of Texas.

And his ex-wife Traci Tucker filed a lawsuit . . . because she wants to get her hands on some of that money.

Traci defended Steven when he was accused of the crimes, and after he was convicted. But in 1992, after he'd been in prison for almost a decade, they got divorced.

Traci says her rationale for the lawsuit is, quote, "he was a victim of a wrongful justice system, and his family was also." A court awarded her about $150,000 and Steven is appealing that decision.

Steven says he's had a TON of legal problems since he got his settlement. Quote, "When the cheese is on the table, the rats come out." He's spent at least $300,000 on legal fees since he was exonerated.

Traci is the first person in U.S. history to file a lawsuit trying to get money after an ex-spouse got a settlement for a wrongful conviction.

High rates of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence were reported by women.
Nearly 1 in 5 women has been raped at some time in her life.
One in 4 women has been a victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in her lifetime.
One in 6 women has experienced stalking victimization during her lifetime in which she felt very fearful or believed that she or someone close to her would be harmed or killed. Much of stalking victimization was facilitated by technology, such as unwanted phone calls and text messages.
Almost 70 percent of female victims experienced some form of intimate partner violence for the first time before the age of 25.
Approximately 80 percent of female victims of rape were first raped before age 25.
Female victims of violence (sexual violence, stalking, intimate partner violence) were significantly more likely to report physical and mental health problems than female non–victims.
Across all forms of violence (sexual violence, stalking, intimate partner violence), the vast majority of victims knew their perpetrator (often an intimate partner or acquaintance and seldom a stranger).

USMWF United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities : Construction worker dies after fall CHAMPAIGN -- We now know a little more about last week's deadly construction accident. It happened at the Beverly Carmike Theater last Monday.

The victim, 54-year old Michael Williams, of Humboldt, reportedly fell while working and sustained head injuries. He was taken to the hospital and died a few days later.

The coroner says details surrounding Williams' fall aren't clear. The autopsy will be completed Monday night which he hopes will provide more answers. Drug and toxicology results will take some time. OSHA is also investigating the accident.

CHAMPAIGN -- A construction worker has died after falling several days ago. The coroner said 54-year old Michael S. Williams, of Humboldt, was working at Beverly Cinemas June 10.

Authorities say Williams fell about 25 feet. Williams died four days later at the Hospital. An autopsy will be performed. The coroner and police are investigating.

Donna Kay Layton : While at the neighborhood pool reading and relaxing....I took a moment from my book to watch this mom spend less then 5 min showing her 6 children, yes 6... how she swims and what they should do...and for the record she really couldn't swim! Off they went... mom to the shade a good distance from the pool chatting with her friend and her 6 children are now in the 4-41/2 foot deep side of the pool....it only took about 20 minutes into the pool visit for one of her children to become a "near drowning" victim!!!!

The Fayetteville Police Department will hold a Community Awareness Meeting on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 6:00 PM. The meeting is being hosted at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church located at 118 Johnson Street.

In an effort to educate and inform the public on what the Police Department is doing to fight crime in their neighborhood, the Fayetteville Police Department holds a meeting every month in an area that has seen an increase in crime. There is this man. We met at National Library at City Centre and started chatting. He told me he was staying alone.

One day in May he asked me to escort him to his house to collect some reading materials and l accepted. When we reached his house he forced himself on me and raped me.

I was angry. I wanted to report the matter to the police but l didn't. I just told myself never to trust him again.

Then again he came back apologising. He even cried saying he was sorry. He's bought me a lot of wonderful gifts and even a phone and clothes.

But he has been asking me to go to his house again. And l am afraid that he might took advantage of me. Or should l really go and trust that he will not rape me again?

Chenango Sheriff : On June 14th, 2013 around 6:00 pm a City of Norwich resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Aggravated Harassment in the second degree.

Deputy Hayner arrested Desiree Prosser for Aggravated Harassment in the second degree. It is alleged that Desiree Prosser (age 26) made several threaten phone calls to the victim on June 14th, 2013.

Prosser was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Guilford Court at a later date.
