Evidence of Strength

There are times when we should be as the towering oak tree, boldly withstanding the forces of nature. At other times, we should be as the weeping willow, allowing our branches to humbly hang to the ground. Consider the distinction Charles H. Spurgeon makes.

Sometimes tears are base things; the offspring of a cowardly spirit. Some men weep when they should instead pray a thing through, and many a woman weeps when she should instead resign herself to the will of God. Many of those salty drops are but an expression of childlike weakness. It would be better if we could wipe such tears away and face a frowning world with a constant countenance.

But oftentimes, tears are the very evidence of strength. There are periods when they are the noblest thing in the world. The tears of repentance are most precious; a cup of them worth a king’s ransom. It is no sign of weakness when a man weeps for sin. Such weeping shows that he has strength of mind; but even more importantly, that he has strength imparted by God, which enables him to renounce his lusts and overcome his passions, and to turn unto God with full purpose of heart.

Paul had often experienced that strength, saying of his many trials, “the Lord stood with me and strengthened me” (2 Timothy 4:17). Never be afraid to shed such tears as this, friend. They are indeed the evidence of strength—God’s strength working in our weakness.

After a long dry season in the south the grass turns brown, stops growing, and becomes lifeless. It appears dead. When a good rain comes though, it seems to instantly stand back up and can seem to grow a foot over night.

The Spirit within you can become just that dry and lifeless when we don't feed it... BUT when exposed to the Lord’s presence it will spring back to life, and start growing again. It is not dead; it is waiting for the rain.

You may be in a draught today (or yesterday, a week ago or a week from now...we all go through it periodically) and think that God has forgotten you. He has not. Vineyards often limit the water to the vines to make their roots go deeper and this causes them to produce better fruit.

In the draught...praise him!

The Final Ground of Assurance

God chose you from the beginning to be saved through sanctification by the Spirit. (2 Thessalonians 2:13)

Dozens of passages in the Bible speak of our final salvation (though not our election) as conditional upon a changed heart and life. The question arises then, how can I have the assurance I will persevere in faith and in the holiness necessary for inheriting eternal life?

The answer is that assurance is rooted in our election (2 Peter 1:10). Divine election is the guarantee that God will undertake to complete by sanctifying grace what his electing grace has begun.

This is the meaning of the new covenant: God does not merely command obedience, he gives it. “The LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live” (Deuteronomy 30:6). “I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes” (Ezekiel 36:27; 11:20; see also Hebrews 13:20; Philippians 2:13).

Election is the final ground of assurance because, since it is God’s commitment to save, it is also God’s commitment to enable all that is necessary for salvation.

Election secures that “those who are justified will be glorified” (Romans 8:30), so that all the conditions laid down for glorification will be met by the power of God’s grace. “God chose you from the beginning to be saved through sanctification by the Spirit” (2 Thessalonians 2:13).

At some time in our marriage, all of us do something for which we need forgiveness and mercy. The truly happy husband or wife is one who lives in an attitude of forgiveness, not harboring grudges or holding the error over the head of the erring one. Refusing to give mercy will prevent our receiving mercy. The eternal law of God indicates that we reap what we sow. When Jesus insists on mercy, He is forbidding one of the most harmful emotions any man or woman can ever have. Bitterness can ruin not only a marriage but also a soul. The Bible warns us to beware the destructive power of bitterness: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled (Hebrews 12:15). Bitterness does two things: it troubles us, and it defiles others.

Our refusal to forgive our mates, children, or parents will destroy our relationships. It will give us high blood pressure, ulcers, colitis, and it will make our offspring angry and rebellious. We simply cannot afford the luxury of holding grudges. We must love and forgive or we perish.

We may feel that we are the one who always forgives. This is a situation that troubled the disciples, too: Then Peter came to Him and said, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven (Matthew 18:21-22). The words of Christ are not always easy to live by, but they must be observed.

Paula Perrins : Advice required : I have a family of rats living under my shed at the bottom of the garden. I'm currently watching who I presume to be mummy rat, picking up scraps from under the bird table and carrying them back under the shed - I presume to baby rats? and she is really rather cute. Is this OK?

Will they overrun the neighbourhood? Come in the house? Give us the plague? or are they more likely to just raise their little rat family under my shed and go about their ratty business? We've seen rats plenty of times before, we back on to the canal and most of us feed the birds around here so there's lots of discarded food and it's away from the house. This is the first time we've noticed any set up residence in the garden though and personally I don't mind at all, if she was a squirrel or a hedgehog no one would bat an eyelid so I would really like to not evict them.

So rats under the shed - thoughts?

(As my mom is coing up next week she is probably reading this and cancelling her train tickets as we speak but it's OK mom, she only comes out if there's no one about and I won't introduce you if you don't feel up to it!)
