WarmFuzzy's Rescue Sanctuary : Foods that are toxic to your pet

Onions and garlic
Allyl propyl disulfide and thiosulfate in onions and garlic is what makes these foods toxic to dogs. The enzyme in humans that digests these foods is not present in dogs. Thus regular ingestion of onion and garlic will weaken the red blood cells causing severe anemia called hemolytic anemia that can result to the death of the pet. For so long a time, garlic has been used on pets. In fact garlic capsules and supplements are commonly sold in pet stores as it is known to lower blood pressure and rid the dog of fleas. Studies however have proven that garlic along with onions is poisonous to dogs. Signs of damage to the red blood cells may not show until 3-5 days after ingestion. Signs of poisoning include weakness, reluctance to move, tiring easily, orange-tinged to dark red urine.

Raw Eggs
Avidin, an enzyme found in the whites of raw eggs decreases biotin (vitamin a) absorption thus causing skin and hair coat disorders. Moreover, raw eggs may also contain the Salmonella and E. coli. bacteria that causes fever, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps. In general a dog would need to consume a fair amount of eggs on a regular basis to cause problems.

Martin Carmichael : Its Thursday and time for an Ollie and Martin pre-cave update... So... we normally drop Amber off at school and then have an hour to kill before playgroup, we've become experts at taking our time browsing in Sainsburys... But today I need to go to the bank before we can do this as like a pleb I forgot my pin number while trying to buy Amanda's B'day present last week and my card is locked, but NatWest won't send it to my house as although we've lived here 9 years, and have been with the same branch with the same account for the last 14 years apparently now my address is invalid (WTF???)
So, we headed to the park but Ollie wasn't happy about this, and most of Chertsey now probably have "MORTSHAKE!!!" ringing in their ears (this is not a spelling mistake) ... regardless, I plodded on, pushing the screaming demon towards the park! We get there and he refuses to get out his push chair, and has now changed his mind from "Mortshake" to "GO HOUSE!" and nothing seemed to be working in calming him, failure to scream his way in to getting a milkshake seemed to have unleashed a new level of subdued temper, and from experience you have to watch yourself when they go quiet!
So I gave in and we've come home, which seems to have appeased him as he hopped out the push chair toddled in to the front room, turned the telly on and is currently watching The Regular Show... I've asked a couple of times "Shall we go to play group" and this seems to provoke the previous anger and I just get "NNNOOOO!"

Someone obviously got out of the wrong side of bed this morning!

Malahide parkrun : future roster | Malahide parkrun There should be lots of lycra on show again this Saturday, as we have a visit from the Piranha Triathlon Club, who are doing this week's parkrun in memory of their former coach John Davis. They are kindly providing a number of marshals for this week as well. Welcome to parkrun folks!

Just a couple of other things to say. First, a reminder that regular runners are expected to volunteer a few times a year. Check out the roster page to see jobs needing to be filled for the weeks ahead at http://www.parkrun.ie/malahide/futureroster/ and send an email to malahidehelpers@parkrun.com when you have a specific date you are available. As an incentive, you get 100 points for volunteering up to three times per year (for the yearly points competition), and it's fun too ... really!!

Lastly, it was brought to our attention that there was a runner with a dog off-lead last week. This is not allowed and is a hazard to other runners. Dogs are welcome at parkruns, but they must be kept on a short lead so they don't impede other runners.
