Cannock & Rugeley, fresh from a wash out last week at home to Wightwick & Finchfield made the short journey down the road the Hammerwich, who had enjoyed a very strong start to the season.

After loosing the toss C&R lost Ali “Pub Landlord” Fawcett early to an LBW which would have been close had it been hitting the stumps. Ryan Ponder joined GOAT Meek at the crease and took the score on to 49 before Ponder for 19. His replacement Chris “Brain Train” Saunders wasted no time in going after the spin of Hammerwich overseas player Damien “Jake Aston” Paul, hitting the ball in the air straight to mid off to head back to pavilion for 0.

Meek was finally bowled for a gallant 27, followed by an aggressive 14 from Darren Aston. The C&R innings then crumbled to 78 all out. A special mention to Stiggy Benton who was dismissed for 6, however if you include all the runs he scored from practice air shots he broke Brian Lara’s 501 record. Aussie Damien Paul finished with impressive figures of 8 for 17 from 11.1 overs.

After tea Hammerwich made a positive start with former C&R opener Danny King playing aggressively before being dismissed for 14 after a great catch by debutant Alex “paternity test pending” Beech off the bowling of Jock Caan. John Ackrill and Damien Paul saw Hammerwich over the finish line in just under 20 overs.

Darren Aston adjudged the tea to be of a high quality standard, scoring 8 out of 10, with the only criticism being that he was behind Chris Saunders in the queue.

On Monday evening C&R begin the defence of the Chauntry Cup Twenty20 competition as they take on Lichfield Cricket Club at Lichfield’s Friary Grange ground, 6.15 pm start, before facing Old Wulfs at Littleworth Road next Saturday.
