Mark Ecklund : Between innings of today's Pirate game, they showed interviews with the players discussing their sports heroes growing up. Jason Grilli, who is about to record another save as I type this, mentioned he had posters of the San Diego Padres Hall of Famer, Dave Winfield on his bedroom wall. This got me to thinking about posters that hung on my bedroom wall. As a lifelong Pirate fan, I'm not sure why I don't remember have a Clemente or a Stargell, except that I seem to recall that Pirates weren't well represented in the sports poster industry. The only posters I clearly recall having are OJ Simpson and Seka. Raise the Jolly Roger!

Rewriting Russian Gymnastics : 1974 World Championships The 1974 World Championships, held in Varna, Bulgaria, were all about Ludmilla Tourischeva. As reigning 1970 World Champion and 1972 Olympic Champion, she took four golds, a silver and a bronze here, affirming her status as Queen of Gymnastics. She medalled on every event.
Just look at her bars routine if you want confirmation of her genius - around 6.30 - the twists sparkle with perfection, the routine composed for beauty as well as complexity. The brooding presence of coach Vladislav Rotstorotsky intensely observes Tourischeva's finest competition.
The Soviet WAG team took 13 individual medals here, grabbing all the honours available on beam and floor. Of the six competing team members, only Nina Dronova failed to secure an individual title, but she still had her gold from the team competition.

Olga Valentyinovna Korbut

Minden idők egyik legnépszerűbb tornásznője 1955. május 16-án született Grodna városában, a mai Fehéroroszországban. 1967-ben már a juniorok között komoly eredményeket ért el. 1972-ben pedig felért a csúcsra. Az akkoriban még rendkívül fiatalnak számító tornásznő három olimpiai bajnoki címet nyert Münchenben.
1977-ben vonult vissza az aktív sporttól. Olimpiákon összesen 4 arany- és két ezüstérmet szerzett. 1988-ban elsőként vették fel a tornászok halhatatlanjai közé. 1994-ben a Sport Illustrated pedig beválasztotta az előző negyven év legnagyobb sportolói közé.
Olga Korbut óriási hatással volt a tornasport fejlődésére. Az addig jellemző eleganciát egyre inkább háttérbe szorította az akrobatika, és a torna a tizenéveseké lett. Kedvessége, intelligenciája miatt a szurkolók valamint a média is rajongott érte. Rengeteget tett sportága népszerűsítéséért, és hatására a nyugati világban egyre többen kezdtek el tornával foglalkozni.
A kiváló sportoló ’90-es évek óta az Egyesült Államokban él.
