Thoroughbred Horse Racing
Thoroughbred Horse Racing : Timeline Photos     ♞ Back to the story of EL VINO! Following several months of early training, our noble Knight was transferred to the barn of John Shirreffs, renowned for his patience in horse development. El Vino made his debut at four in a Maiden Special Weight at one mile on the dirt at Santa Anita on March 14, 2010. He finished 7th under jockey Mike Smith, and the chart read, "EL VINO unhurried early, chased along the rail or just off the fence and failed to reach contention." He would not race again until January of 2011. Fate was to intervene.....♞

Press clipping from the March 12, 2010, Daily Racing Form by Steve Andersen, marking El Vino's debut:

ZENYATTA'S WORKMATE DEBUTS

"El Vino makes his career debut in a one-mile turf race at Santa Anita on Sunday. Considering the company he has kept in recent workouts, his seven rivals should be a much easier group.

Trained by John Shirreffs for Jerry and Ann Moss, El Vino has been working with the two-time champion Zenyatta at Hollywood Park. During the workouts, El Vino had led Zenyatta to the stretch before being passed.

Shirreffs says El Vino is the sort of colt that can run at a steady pace.

'A distance will help him because he's the kind that goes at a 12-and-change clip,' Shirreffs said.

Shirreffs said El Vino could benefit from the experience of the race, and that he's not necessarily expecting a win. The trainer is not known for winning with first-time starters.
