Thomas Fish : I heard this morning that Fleet Week in NYC has been cancelled because of sequestration. Having worked in Manhattan I know that this is a big thing both for the Navy and the City. But we can't afford it so it has to go away just like tours of the White House. So why is it we can afford to send the First Lady and her children to Martha's Vineyard for the entire summer? Need a vacation go to Camp David.

Halliburton Joins the Natural Gas Vehicle Party

Another day, another U.S. company announces that it is deploying a fleet of natural gas vehicles. This week, it's Haliburton's (NYSE: HAL ) turn: The company will be adding 100 natural gas vehicles to its fleet. Vehicles aren't the only way this company is betting on natural gas, though. Halliburton and its partners have also successfully completed a well, but they did so using natural gas instead of diesel fuel as a power source.

The fuel savings for 100 natural gas vehicles may not change Halliburton's income statement much right now, but moving to natural gas will certainly take a bite out of costs. Its also easy to imagine that natural gas drillers will like seeing these vehicles show up on site. In this video, Fool.com contributor Tyler Crowe looks at why although this story may seem small, these small stories will all add up to something big for the industry.

One company that benefits greatly from all this news is Westport Innovations. The company's natural gas engines are the talk of the industry, and it stands to gain the most from the boom in natural gas.

James Picht : Harlan and I went to see the new Star Trek movie, "Into Darkness", last night. We enjoyed it. Catherine doesn't care for that sort of movie, so Lisa will take her to see something else this week. Harlan gave the film 4.5 stars out of 5. I think I'd give it 4.

(Mild spoilers follow, but nothing that you don't either know by midway through the film or can't guess easily enough.) It was fun, but it borrowed too heavily from earlier films - "The Wrath of Khan" and "The Undiscovered Country" in particular. It borrowed well, however, and the newest incarnation of Khan is considerably more sinister and less prone to chewing the scenery than Ricardo Montalban. I was rooting for him, and was a little sad that the pretty-boy Kirk would inevitably have to emerge victorious. It's Spock who actually defeats him, however, though Kirk gets to save the ship and grow up a little. I don't know why they needed Khan's blood when they had 72 other perfectly good sources. And why doesn't Star Fleet monitor the airspace around its headquarters and goings on in earth orbit (or lunar orbit) a little better? And where do you get the resources to build a dreadnought-class starship without the rest of Star Fleet noticing? And how does a starship sit at torpedo distance from Cronos for hours and hours without shields, without the Klingons noticing? And if the Federation has interstellar transport capability (from Earth to Cronos!), you hardly need starships to get from here to there anymore. By the way, I like the new Klingon makeup.

Harlan kept telling me that I remind him of Spock. He liked Spock, so that's nice. My hair will NOT be cut in bangs, however.

New pictures have been added with descriptions of the air battles around the Falkland Islands this week in 1982. The Argentine Navy and Air Force used aircraft types that are on display at PWAM to attack the Royal Navy. The Argentine Air Force and Navy performed best of that nation's military forces. Ultimately, the United Kingdom would reclaim the islands for Great Britain.

Harley Barker : Life has been busy for me lately. A ton of stuff is changing and I'm happy about it all for the most part. I haven't talked about it because I've been handling it and didn't want to talk about it, but after 16 years, my family business was forced to shut down. We were hit hard by the recession and fought as long and hard as we could to get through it. I truly believe that things happen for a reason and that this is the path I'm meant to be on.

I've gotten back into working on cars again. I miss the days when you could see the entire engine and actually get to what you're working on. The computer systems they use nowadays are really cool though.

With Heather and I both being out of work now, it's been a lot of fun hanging out together. I don't know if I've ever known someone that I could stand to be around 24 hours a day and still want to be around them more. She truly is my best friend and I feel that I now know what love really is and what it means.

With that being said, I'm going to get back to getting stuff done. I hope you all are doing well and that you have a safe and happy MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!

Drive Away 2 Day : Growing Number Of Americans Going Carless... | Drive Away 2Day “While the recession was in large part responsible for the latest spurt, the trend was already clear,” says CNW’s research chief Art Spinella. “A growing number of Americans felt they didn’t need or want a personal car.”

According to CNW data, the number of U.S. households without a car stood at a modest 5.7 percent in 1991. That figure stayed relatively stable through the early part of the 2000s. But it has been increasing slowly since then, with a “rapid rise” beginning in 2007. By last year, the total number of carless households hit 9.3 percent.

The new research is in line with a separate study released last week by the U.S. Public Research Interest Group, or PIRG, which declared that “the driving boom is over.” It noted a decline in the average household vehicle fleet, for one thing, and it found that Millennial motorists are both waiting longer to get a driver’s license than previous generations and clocking fewer miles on the road.

Matthew came to VCP under the father son rule (Dennis Longstaff No.15) and has been the go to front man for a lot of big pours and jobs where line needs to be added. Number 8 is where he has landed at this stage of his career and with some minor improvements, could be seen a touch higher in countdowns to come.
A formidable talent that will surely get the job done with little to no regard for his own safety, this hard nut can each week, be found deep in the overtime pool, swimming laps.

Number 7, the Red Rocket, Colby Blyth. Starting out as a line hand, we have witnessed significant improvement from this gifted ranga over the last 3 to 4 seasons to see him progress from a good line hand to the regular operator of the second biggest pump in the fleet. But despite having a high enough PRI to hold down the no.7 spot, Colby has flown under the radar somewhat whilst putting in a lot of consistent performances. Perhaps some others have taken his agility for granted.

Leif 'Big L' Hersey. The Boss will be disappointed with his number 6 position and, to be honest, he should be firmly inside the top 2 or 3, Unfortunately for Leif though, years of being on the phone and remote, and seldom venturing onto the line pump or boom hose has seen a dramatic drop in his Pumper Rating Index (PRI - Champion Data).
This one time rising star and former number 1 rating holder could still challenge any of the top 5 but seems content with holding the number 6 spot down with ease.
Much respect Leif.

There's been talk for a while now that Fleet Week New York, which was set for May 23-30, might be canceled this year due to budget cuts, but many were hoping that a miracle would keep it going as it has almost every year since 1984. In a sad turn of events for NYC, which has welcomed thousands of Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen for the week-long festivities that included demonstrations, ships coming into port, and various events, Fleet Week NYC 2013 has been canceled due to cuts brought on by the sequestration.
