Gareth Howells : Ian Anderson says Jethro Tull is over Once Ian Anderson started gigging without Martin Barre it looked likely to end up like this, so this is no surprise, but it's a good time to write RIP to a band that were a big influence on my taste - and were the main reasons for my shift into acoustic music when I was listening to almost all heavy rock when I was 16. Tommy Vance played Thick as a Brick and I was sold - saw them a number of times live - and basically loved what they did (particularly the 70s stuff obviously) - Barriemore Barlow is still my favourite drummer, and Thick as a Brick is still a desert island disc....so it's not a massive surprise, but a great band is officially silenced by its founder and writer. 2 hours ago - View -

The Hearth Centre : A fantastic poem by Doreen Foster, touching on the therapeutic power of poetry, inspired by Poem in Your Pocket 02/04/14:
DESERT ISLAND DISCS
Seagulls screech over ‘A Sleepy Lagoon’
Then fade into dead air.
I sit, still puzzled by a castaway’s choice
Of George Formby endlessly
‘Cleaning Windows’ on that far distant shore.
But, would my own selections fare any better?
Will Queen or Floyd still ‘Rock’ me year on year?
Would Ravel, Schubert, Satie still be music to my ears?
And could any luxury compensate
For missing family and friends?
A choice anthology of poems
Might just about keep me sane. 3 hours ago - View -

Bohdan Gembarsky : The Stranglers - Hanging Around On this day (Apr. 16) in 1977: one of my all-time favourite bands, The Stranglers, released their debut album 'Rattus Norvegicus'; it was originally to be entitled 'Dead on Arrival' until the band chose to adopt the Latin name for the Norwegian Rat. It was one of the highest-selling LPs of the punk era in Britain, reaching #4 on the UK albums chart, eventually charting for 34 weeks in total. The first 10,000 copies of the original vinyl release included a free 7" single, containing "Peasant in the Big Shitty (live)" & "Choosey Susie." This remains one of my desert-island discs. Dave Watkins : Thanks again to Eddie Martin for taking the time to visit the show earlier, always good to talk to him. Obviously the Desert Island Discs idea didn't come off and the amount of listeners crashed the system for some of you, apologies if you were affected.
On the plus side, we got to play more of his own great music and we announced the Overseas Artist names for the BBA's - and if you missed any of this, the listen again link will be here by the weekend! 18 hours ago - View -

Brian Mayfield : Tonight's shirt is easy as i've been listening to this fantastic slab of death/doom metal. Saw them on this tour and they were awesome, never seen a band so into it and Aaron Aedy was headbanging like his life depended on it! Not a duff track on this album, this would be a "desert island disc" for me, no problem. 21 hours ago - View -
