2013 Indianapolis 500 Media Day Set For Thursday, May 23 At IMS

Media members will have their last opportunity to interview all 33 drivers participating in the 97th Indianapolis 500 during the Indianapolis 500 Media Day on Thursday, May 23 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The event will take place from 2:30-4:40 p.m. at the Legends Row Hospitality Suites, located between Gasoline Alley and the MotoGP garages. Drivers will be located in suites between the Rick Mears suite and Gordon Johncock suite.

The starting field will be divided into two sessions starting at 2:30 p.m., with drivers located in individual interview booths.

•First session (2:30-3:30 p.m.): Marco Andretti, Ana Beatriz, Ryan Briscoe, Scott Dixon, Dario Franchitti, James Hinchcliffe, Ryan Hunter-Reay, James Jakes, Charlie Kimball, Buddy Lazier, Pippa Mann, Graham Rahal, Alex Tagliani, E.J. Viso, Justin Wilson.

In 1953 pole winner Bill Vukovich was a mere 3.130 MPH faster than the slowest car. Vuky led 195 of the 200 laps. So much for parity.
Maybe the really fast drivers are the ones who get through traffic best. It's harder to be fast with 32 other cars out there to deal with. My friend, Dave Ingle, puts speed and distance all in historic context with this post.

IndyCar Serious : IndyCar confirms post-Indy engine penalties
May 20, 2013

The entries for Dario Franchitti, Charlie Kimball, Josef Newgarden and Graham Rahal will incur 10-grid spot penalties for the first race of the IndyCar double-header June 1 because of unapproved engine changes at Indianapolis, IndyCar has confirmed

Teams are allowed to switch out their engines once they meet the 2,000-mile threshold or by IndyCar approval for repair (click here for officlal engine use update). Honda engines in Franchitti's and Kimball's Chip Ganassi Racing entries were swapped out before Pole Day qualifications. The Honda engines for Rahal and Newgarden were changed out to their Indianapolis 500 race engines for their qualifying attempts on Bump Day.

Full-season entrants may use no more than five fresh-built engines from the first Open Test in mid-March at Barber Motorsports Park until the season finale at Fontana's Auto Club Speedway. For each fresh engine installed during this time, a grid spot penalty will be issued. Full-season entrants are allotted 10,000 miles of running per calendar year.

The fresh engine fitted for the Indianapolis 500 shall count as one of the five allotted to full-season entrants, which have the option to use up the mileage in that engine for subsequent races or refit the previous engine for the balance of its mileage and then use the Indianapolis 500-fitted engine.

Another fun story came from Dario Franchitti when he recounted a sideways moment during practice on Wednesday.
“We made a change to the car and all of a sudden in [Turn] 2 I've got almighty oversteer,” he said as his eyes got big. “We're talking like 30 degrees of steering to catch it, then catch the next slide after that one.
“Well, the boys are watching all this as it's happening (on live telemetry monitors in the Ganassi pits) and come over the radio and tell me to pit…right when I'm trying to keep the thing off the wall… I'm like, ‘Thanks, got it…a bit busy at the moment, boys..."
