Alfonso Chiesa Alfonso Chiesa : Robert Schumann - Traumerei / Reverie     Carissima, ho pianto di gioia pensando che tu sei mia,
e spesso mi domando se davvero ti merito.
Qualcuno potrebbe pensare che nel cuore e
nella mente di nessun uomo potrebbero
affollarsi tante cose in un sol giorno...
Ma quanto felice mi sentivo ieri e l'altro ieri!
Dalle tue lettere si librava uno spirito talmente nobile,
una fede, una ricchezza d'amore! Cosa non farei per amor tuo!

Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann
The modern biographers worry
"how far it went," their tender friendship.
They wonder just what it means
when he writes he thinks of her constantly,
his guardian angel, beloved friend.
The modern biographers ask
the rude, irrelevant question
of our age, as if the event
of two bodies meshing together
establishes the degree of love,
forgetting how softly Eros walked
in the nineteenth century, how a hand
held overlong or a gaze anchored
in someone's eyes could unseat a heart,
and nuances of address, not known
in our egalitarian language
could make the redolent air
tremble and shimmer with the heat
of possibility. Each time I hear
the Intermezzi, sad
and lavish in their tenderness,
I imagine the two of them
sitting in a garden
among late-blooming roses
and dark cascades of leaves,
letting the landscape speak for them,
leaving nothing to overhear.

Paul David Doellinger Paul David Doellinger : Having just watched the Martin Scorsese movie of the Edith Wharton novel "The Age of Innocence" which I read and recommended last week, I share with you this poem from yesterday's "Writer's Almanac" by Garrison Keillor. Maybe this is why I read so many 19th century novels and listen to so much 19th century music:

Bella Voce of Mobile Bella Voce of Mobile : A Wonderful Lady: Clara Schumann (1819-1896), German musician and composer, wife of Robert Schumann. Her "claim to fame" was more as a pianist and ,as such, she made an impression which lasts until today. She was one of the first pianists to perform from memory which has become the standard for concertizing. She performed from memory as early as the age of thirteen. Clara was the mother of eight children and was the breadwinner of her household which she did by giving concerts. Her career spanned sixty-one years!

John Atkinson John Atkinson : We went to see "The Great Gatsby" in 3D the other day. Fantastic film. As one who works in the area of motion graphics, it was the realization of what I have always striven for. Words and text lifting off the 2D plane and using various 2.5D techniques to trick the eye into thinking it is in 3D is one thing, but to actually see it in 3D is amazing. Imagine the letters of the alphabet falling like snow, only to form in midair the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald...truly beautiful!

Nada Loutfi - Classical Hour Nada Loutfi - Classical Hour : Johannes Brahms, Joachin Turina, Classical Hour this Sunday, May 26, 4pm, at the Clifton Center

Dear Classical Hour Friends,

Just imagine yourself in Seville with our first selection , spanish poems set to music by composer Joachin Turina, who lived in the first part of the 20th century , living in Madrid as a professor at the Royal Conservatory,

Then travel back to the year 1853, when young Johannes Brahms, looking like a " young german God" in the words of Robert Schumann, knocks at his door and plays for him and his wife, concert pianist Clara Wieck-Schumann, the matersfull piano Sonata in f minor, which sets a culminus point in musical history ....

My guest of many Classical Hours for the Turina Songs, will be tenor Kenji Tashiro from Japan!

See you Sunday!

Yours,
Nada

Our reception is sponsored by Ramsis Cafe on the World!
Stay and mingle with the artists...

Beth Levin Beth Levin : On Easter Monday, 1872, when Brahms was thirty-eight years old, he wrote to Clara Schumann:

All winter long I have been doing counterpoint exercises very assiduously. What for? To be better able to disparage my pretty things?—I did not need counterpoint for that. To become a university professor?—no, not that either. To learn to write music better?—even that I’m not hoping for. But still in the end it’s a bit tragic when one gets to be too clever for one’s needs.
