Vince Capman Vince Capman : The Boston Globe: For the millions of Americans who have been unemployed for many months or even years, help is not on the way. The economy has been improving, the stock market rising, and overall unemployment declining, but the number of long-term unemployed remains near record levels. Many age 45 and older — often struggle in isolation to find jobs while exhausting their unemployment benefits.

Jerry D. Narron Jerry D. Narron : Tandem parking spots sell for $560,000 - The Boston Globe     Now you see why I love the state of N. C. Don't have to pay to park in your own yard yet; however, that could change the way the city keeps taxing people:

BOSTON — Parking is such a precious commodity in Boston that one woman was willing to pay $560,000 for two off-street spaces near her home.

Lisa Blumenthal won the spots in the city's Back Bay neighborhood during an on-site auction Thursday held in a steady rain by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS had seized the spots from a man who owed back taxes.

Blumenthal, who lives in a multimillion-dollar home near the parking spaces, tells The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/13KqntI ) she didn't expect the bidding to go quite so high for the spots she says will come in handy for guests and workers.

The record for a single spot in Boston is $300,000.

The median price of a single-family home in Massachusetts is $313,000.

Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity : Minimum wage hike should be coupled with lower rate for seasonal youth employment - The Boston Globe     "Raise minimum wage but exempt summer jobs for teens" (The Boston Globe): “Ten dollars by 2015 would be a good compromise. Consider that, in his 2013 State of the Union, President Obama called for raising the federal minimum wage — which all states must abide by — from $7.25 to $9. Given Massachusetts has one of the country’s highest costs of living, it makes sense the state should have a higher minimum wage. It would also be fair to employers to exclude teenage workers from this latest raise.”

Richardson Simon Seng Richardson Simon Seng : Before police could plan for a terrorist attack, the real thing happened - The Boston Globe     The day of the Boston Bombings on April 15th was also a Massachusetts state holiday known as "Patriot's Day" to commemorate the starting battles of the Revolutionary War. Coincidentally, the Boston Globe now reports that the Boston office of Homeland Security was, in the months prior to the bombing, planning a domestic terrorism training exercise. The hypothetical terrorist group was a cadre of disgruntled Pro-2nd Amendment libertarians. Their name was "Free America Citizens" and their mission was to kill vast numbers of people around Boston by leaving backpacks full of explosives in public spaces. Very, very interesting. http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/06/07/before-police-could-plan-for-terrorist-attack-real-thing-happened/ufxjb9O0RXyzVZNPFyGkiI/story.html

NBA Analysis and Opinion NBA Analysis and Opinion : Some news coming in about the Celtics/Clippers situation. Sources are saying that it seems as if the Clippers have walked away from the bargaining table and just might be done with the talks to acquire Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers from the Boston Celtics for good. The teams have no plans to speak again, the sources said, and the Clippers are preparing to move on and hire a coach this week. The Boston Globe, meanwhile, tweeted that Danny Ainge confirmed that the talks between the teams had ended. The talks broke down this morning when the Clippers "refused to budge" on Boston's latest proposal that asked for DeAndre Jordan, straight up for Garnett, and two first-round draft picks as compensation for allowing Rivers out of the final three-years and $21 million of his contract.
