Ash Wednesday ushers in the 40 day period of Lent when Catholics receive on their foreheads the mark of the cross from ashes of palms used in last year’s Palm Sunday. This practice of receiving ashes on the forehead

That Lent did not come from CHRIST AND HIS APOSTLES and therefore is unchristian is admitted by the Catholic authorities:

“True, Christ did not explicitly define days nor the weeks wherein his followers would be obliged to fast and abstain.” (The Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. I )

Although the Lenten Season purports to commemorate a biblical theme, namely Christ’s passion and death, the word LENT does not appear in the bible, the primary source of information about Christ and his work. The word LENT is teutonic origin, from the Anglo-Saxon word LENCTEN which means spring (New Catholic Encyclopedia, vol. VIII)

There had been attempts to trace Lent to apostolic times but scholars reject such attempts:

“Some of the Fathers as early as the fifth century supported the view that this forty days fast was of Apostolic institution.” “But the best modern scholars are almost unanimous in rejecting this view, for in existing remains of the first three centuries we find both considerable diversity of practice regarding the fast before Easter…” (The Catholic Encyclopedia , vol. IX)

Mentioned first in the fifth canon of Nicaea in 325 (New Catholic Encyclopedia, vol. VIII)

Clara Anne Fetters : Another busy week. Both had appts at Cincinnati Eye Institute in Blue Ash Wednesday & I had appt. at Riverhills Neurology today. Went to Bethesda North Hospital to see lovely photo plaque in honor of Carla, moher of granddaughters, Jill, Jessie, & Justine, who worked there 31 years since she was 19. Met Neil for lunch at River City Grille. Went to Y only 1 day all week-Tuesday, Must do better next week! Life is good. Happy weekend to Family & Friends. God bless all.

The Presbyterian Church,
The Baptist Church,
The Methodist Church ,
The Catholic Church and
The Jewish Synagogue.

Each church and Synagogue was overrun with pesky squirrels.

One day, the Presbyterian Church called a meeting to decide what to do about the squirrels. After much prayer and consideration they determined that the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn't interfere with God's divine will.

In The BAPTIST CHURCH the squirrels had taken up habitation in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a cover on the baptistery and drown the squirrels in it. The squirrels escaped somehow and there were twice as many there the next week

The Methodist Church got together and decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God's creation. So, they humanely trapped the Squirrels and set them free a few miles outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back.

But -- The Catholic Church came up with the best and most effective solution. They baptized the squirrels and registered them as members of the church.

Now they only see them on Christmas , Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday and Easter.

Not much was heard about the Jewish Synagogue, but they took one squirrel and had a short service with him called circumcision and they haven't seen a squirrel on the property since.
