Ann Miller : Photos from Steve Berden's post in The Isle of Wight Heritage Group     THE NEEDLES

Although the name “Wight” is derived from an old English word meaning “rising from the sea,” the Island was once joined to the mainland by a chalk ridge which existed between Freshwater, and Studland in Dorset.
About 5000 B.C. this ridge was breached by the sea, and through erosion and the sinking of the bed of the Solent River, an island was created. Over the centuries, this left a jagged ridge of chalk at each end of the breach: at Swanage, we have the Old Harry Rocks, and at Freshwater we have the Needles.
These rocks have always been a hazard to shipping, particularly sailing ships trying to round the island while being driven by a south westerly gale, but it was 1785 before the first lighthouse was built, and even then it was erected on top of the cliffs 715 feet above sea level!
Fortunately a new lighthouse was constructed in 1859 on the outermost rock, which warns all shipping of the dangerous coastline,
But the question remains, “why the Needles?” One Victorian linguist decided that it was a corruption of the German “Nieder fels - under the cliff” yet although we have absorbed words from the Gauls, Saxons, Danes and French who have invaded us during our history, the lsle of Wight shows no sign of any German speaking invaders from whom we could have learnt the phrase.
The answer is clear: there used to be a Needle Rock, a conical pillar of chalk standing 120 feet high, and known to mariners as Lot's Wife” which gave its name to the Needle Rocks.
This pillar was undermined by the waves and finally fell into the sea during a storm in 1764, with a crash that could be heard in Portsmouth, leaving us with no reminder of “Lot’s Wife" except the name, “The Needles.”
