Neville and West Ouachita are always the usual championship suspects in District 2-4A. Only the path the Lady Tigers took this year was a little bit different.
Trey Dozier put his squad through the paces of a tough schedule with the idea of getting them battle tested come April. Despite a 3-7 start, Neville fought its way into striking distance entering the home stretch of the season.
Sitting at 9-12, Neville ripped off a 6-2 record down the stretch to claim its first outright district crown since 2012. Of course to do that, the Lady Tigers (15-14, 8-0) had to go through West Ouachita, who they split the title with in 2013.
Neville left the Reservation with an 8-6 win over the Lady Chiefs and an undefeated finish in 2-4A.
“The girls were so excited about going down there and it’s just great to win the outright district championship,” Dozier said. “They’ve worked hard all year and it’s started to pay off right now.”
Just as Dozier predicted, the schedule toughened up the Lady Tigers as they gritted through West Ouachita’s best shots to get the win.
“We had to go out on the field and talk to them but they showed their maturity and that’s what you want to see. They relaxed and made the plays to win,” Dozier said.
Dozier credited pitcher Amber Coons for stepping up when the team needed her along with seniors Megan Long, Abbey Vallery, Olivia Fechter and Hannah Griffen.
“We play together as a team everybody feeds off each other,” Dozier said. “The main thing with our girls is everything we do is a team effort and we’ll need that going into the playoffs.” 4 hours ago - View -
