Patrick Fish Patrick Fish : Its true what Stalin said and I never thought it until the last few days: 'If one person dies, it is a tragedy, if a million die it is a statistic'. There's been so much coverage for this soldier and how heroic he is yet never so much for those who lose their lives in Afghanistan, Iraq etc. A bit sad really.

Neal Owen Neal Owen : Thanks to the British ’n’ American forces, the heroin trade has virtually been destroyed. Two mad cap rulers and many of their Generals (who were much worse than the leaders by-the-way) have since been brought to justice. Also, women in Afghanistan, and Iraq have now took a lion step towards emancipation; and of course, last but not least, the coalition's magnum opus: the prevention of another Eastern Block meltdown, this time in the Middle-East. To conclude: it was never about oil, we can easily get that from Georgia or a plethora of other locations. It was always about humanity, costing both treasuries billions. What has Islam done for humanity lately? Well having to be tarred by the same brush has got to hurt (oh no not this again). So today, lets complete the good work cycle, and make a point of talking to your kinsman. Take care and remember though, no good deed goes unpunished.

Claudio Lodici Claudio Lodici : A Global War on Terror by Another Name Doesn't Tell Us How to Succeed     President Obama rejected the Bush-era term Global War on Terrorism in a major speech justifying and announcing changes to his counterterrorism policies at the National Defense University on Thursday. "Beyond Afghanistan, we must define our effort not as a boundless 'global war on terror' — but rather as a series of persistent, targeted efforts to dismantle specific networks of violent extremists that threaten America," Obama said. Never mind that the Obama administration stopped using the term in early 2009. When justifying his use of drone strikes in countries the U.S. is not at war with in a war against "networks" with a not-yet-clear end, it helps for Obama to use the rhetoric George W. Bush as a foil. Obama laid out his policies in terms of their opposition to President Bush's. Obama rejects the notion of a 'Global War on Terrorism. It's an amorphous thing, and besides, terrorism is just a tactic. They are defining this more narrowly than a Global War on Terror, and Obama doesn't want a war footing in perpetuity. As for the methods used, drone strikes are preferable to large-scale military action like in the Iraq war. Obama implicitly drew that contrast, too. Drone strikes are the best course of action when where a terrorist compound cannot be breached without triggering a firefight or when putting U.S. boots on the ground may trigger a major international crisis.

Jessica Gould Jessica Gould : https://www.facebook.com/VICE/posts/591854574181138     "For 12 years British Muslims have been set upon, pilloried and alienated by successive governments and by the media for things that they did not do. We must say clearly that the alleged actions of these two men are theirs alone, regardless of being informed by the wars, and we should not descend into yet another round of collective responsibility peddling.

Indeed, if there is collective responsibility for the killings, it belongs to the hawks whose policies have caused bloodbaths – directly, as in Afghanistan and Iraq, and indirectly in places as far apart as Woolwich and Boston, which in turn have created political space for the far right to peddle their hatred, as we saw in the immediate aftermath of the Woolwich attack.

What we must do now is straightforward enough. Our own responsibilities are first of all to make sure innocents are not subject to blanket punishment for things that they did not do, and to force our government – safe in their houses – to put an end to Britain's involvement in the vicious foreign occupations that have again created bloodshed in London."

Melissa Cowell Melissa Cowell : In the Guardian, former British soldier Joe Glenton, who served in the war in Afghanistan, writes under the headline "Woolwich attack: of course British foreign policy had a role". He explains:

"While nothing can justify the savage killing in Woolwich yesterday of a man since confirmed to have been a serving British soldier, it should not be hard to explain why the murder happened. . . . It should by now be self-evident that by attacking Muslims overseas, you will occasionally spawn twisted and, as we saw yesterday, even murderous hatred at home. We need to recognise that, given the continued role our government has chosen to play in the US imperial project in the Middle East, we are lucky that these attacks are so few and far between."
