The Atheist's Bible Commentary : One of the things that atheists do not do well is rhetorical arguments. We tend to get so caught up in the purely rational that we forget the potency of emotion as a driving force for human action. Religion has always capitalized on emotion as a commodity and used it to manipulate and control people. With the power of genuine context of reality behind an argument utilizing rhetorical devices and sophistry has the potential to dismiss the paltry expressions of religious faith.

Emotive provocation can be so powerfully effective and it is not a fallacy of appealing to emotion because it is not utilizing emotion as a replacement for a rational argument but is connecting emotion to a valid truth to unlock the beauty of the universe and inspire others to see a wider perspective.

Cold and expressionless arguments of fact and pure logic may work on the rational, but if you want to reach religious people you have to hit them in the feels.
